My very first Ludum Dare! :)

Hi there!

It seems to be what a lot of people do, write here what programmes they are going to use, so here I go.
I’m an unexperienced game-developer, I’ve learned some Java and Gml (gamemaker language), I’m going to use gamemaker, it’s the language/engine/programme I’ve got  the most experience in and it’ll probarly be the fastest way for me to work! :). I’m really pumped to do this, hoping it’ll improve my skills in general and make better games too :).

Btw! I’d love some tips on working in short time and just game development in general! :)

What I’ll use:

  • Language/Game-Engine: Gamemaker studio.
  • “Art”(I’m crap at it :3): Gimp and/or Paint.net and a little bit of gamemaker’s sprite editor.
  • Sound: SFXR.
  • Music (If I get the time): FL-studio.

Good luck to all! Mainly the other first-timers! :)

Have a good scope and avoid feature creep. Of course, part of the fun is the spontaneity of the whole shebang, but you still have only 48 hours. In short, try to keep it reasonable; if you start small and make good time, then you have a bit more breathing room to branch out a bit.

First Ludum Dare Expectations!

Hey guys, I thought I’d do a before and after thingy, so here are my expectations for my very first Ludum Dare!
By the way, this isn’t my “I’m in post”, that can be found here : http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/2014/04/14/myveryfirstld/

So, here’s some info and expectations.

  • I’ve been sick the past week, feeling a little better today, let’s hope it won’t influence my performance too much!
  • I’m guessing I won’t get high in the rankings, but who knows!
  • I’m planning to make a 2d game, either topdown or sideview. It might even turn out to be a puzzle game type of thing.
  • I do think I’ll get to finish it. I’m going to start small and work my way out from there, hoping to make it not too big in the beginning =D.
  • Graphics and sound won’t be so good (coding probarly too :P), but I’ll try my best!
  • I’m not sure about sleep yet, probarly will end up in loads of coffee :).
  • I’m going to watch some live streams while making my game.
  • If I ever get writers-block or programming-block, I’m going to take a walk! Look: (http://blog.bufferapp.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/brain.png).

So yeah! Hoping for the best! Give me some tips if you feel like it, always good to have!

Best of luck to YOU!

Aw, that’s a shame. I hope you will soon be better! 😉

LD30

I’m In, let’s not get sick and puke on my keyboard this time!

This will be my 2nd time attempting LD, last time (LD #29), I had gotten sick to the point of me laying in bed for 4 weeks.

I’ll be using:

Engine: Gamemaker, I’m quite new to game-dev, so I’ll use game-maker ;), fast and powerfull.
Programming-language: GML (Gamemaker language).
Sound: sfxr.
Music: If I get to it, FL Studio or something.
Graphics: Gimp/Paint.net
Vitamines: Loads, so I won’t be sick, AGAIN.

Have fun all, good luck. And make some games!

Good luck man, hopefully you’ll feel ok this time! l

my warmup weekend thingy

So, I thought I’d make a simple logo and intro for me, so I did it the hard way, program yourself a logo and intro.
Why? It’s fun and good learning, the outcome might be a “little” worse than it’d be if I just did it the normal way. But now I learnt new things, practised my programming, had fun, and have become even more proud of myself =). Also, it might be slower than just a video/pictures (not sure), but it shouldn’t impact performance too much.

Results:

Dutch Derpy Guy's new logo

And the intro. <– link to youtube.

The quality in the video is bad, there’s a weird bar, and one of the sounds are missing. This is only in the video though, the real intro (ingame) won’t be like that :)

I used:

Sounds: bfxr(for the “pling”), audacity and a stick (for the sweeping).
Art: all programming (gamemaker, since I’ll be making LD with that too, it’s nice and fast).

It took me about 4 hours to figure out everything.

I highly reccomend programming art for fun and learning! Intro’s are fun too ;).

Edit: eddited a part of the things I used (unfinished sentence)

This is pretty neat!

LD31

I’m sorta half maybe in! :D or :(

Hey people!

I might be in for a single day Ludum Dare! It’ll mainly be some practice :). It’s my third time I’ll enter and it’ll hopefully be the second time I’ll finish!

Why maybe and just one day?

At the moment I’m sick (flu), as I have been for the past 1.5 weeks. And I have a “history” of being sick for long periods. Also I’ll be busy sunday for “Sinterklaas”  (It’s a Dutch holiday, comparable to santa claus), wich will need some preparations. But I think I’ll find the time to do so.

What will I use?

I am still unsure about what I’ll use, but I’ll probarly go with these:

  • Graphics: Photoshop or Gimp.
  • Sound: bfxr.
  • Music: abundant music.
  • Code: Python and pyGame, I just started learning it so it’ll be great practice (learning thanks to this great guy). If I don’t feel confident enough, I might use javascript.
  • Style: 2D or text based :)

Good luck to you all!

And most important:

HAVE FUN!

I’m maybe a little in!

Hey Ludum darer’s

Due to a busy weekend and only getting to know that LD is this weekend at tueseday I’ll be in but mainly to practice new things :)

I’m going to be using Javascript / php (if I’m doing some multiplayer turnbased stuff or something?) and as little as posible libaries, to practice. this means it’ll probarly be a canvas game or text-based (with maybe some images or so, but I’m awful at art :))

I’ll be using:

Code: HTML, CSS, Javascript or PHP (Most likely javascript, I dislike PHP but it’s something I have to do for school).
Art: If I’m doing any, gimp, maybe some paint.net. OOHH If any graphic desingy people would like to do a JAM with me, that would be a cool experience :D! (Just comment if you’re interested and we can get in touch, I guess :D)Sound: Nothing planned, if I will I’ll probarly use www.bfxr.net.
Music:  Again, nothing planned. Maybe I’ll do some guitar stuffs and use the fruity loops demo a bit.
Bever-rage: Coffee! Maybe some monster energy too :)
Code-Editor: Sublime Text 3 (EMMET, Colorpicker and some self-made templates)

If nobody wants to do artsy stuff/programming with me, I’ll go enter the compo, if someone feel like doing  it with me, I’ll be in and we can jam together <3 (Ohh, great sentence…)

Everybody have a lot of fun, learn some stuff, make great games!
I can’t wait to create my game and play your games!

LD 39

I'm in!

Hey all! <3. I'm in! I've got nothing to do the weekend, so I'll make a game ^.^ I hope to have my (new) website up when we start!

Goals

  • Finish this time. I've participated multiple times, never actually finished though. Due to being sick, not liking the idea way too late. Just not having gameplay working and so on.
  • Improve programming, I'm not a great programmer yet, so doing this should help me out.
  • Keep things simple, I shouldn't over complicate stuff to too much.
  • Try to team up! see the little 'team?' part :)

Team?

I'm looking to team up with someone or multiple someones from Europe/Africa (it can be somebody from anywhere else in the world, if they want to be up at the same time as me, which is basically European timezones).

I don't mind if you're a beginner or a advanced person.

I also don't mind what you do, I'm happy if you can program, do artsy stuffs, make sounds, music, write. or whatever!

I'm looking to team up, mostly to learn more, have more fun, hopefully make some friends and keep myself motivated!

Just comment if you feel like teaming up or got any questions!

programs/code

I'm not sure what I'll be using yet, or if I will do it (due to hopefully teaming up), so I'll just list my ideas of what I might use :).

note that I'll probably program if I team up, and I'm definitely up to do other things too.

  • Programming:
    • JS/web (maybe php?). I'll probably won't use any libaries, I find it way more fun to program it all in!
    • Gamemaker Studio (1). I've got the license. but my windows pc at the moment is dead (using linux at the moment), thus this will be harder, but, I might be able to fix it before the kick-off.
    • Python. I've been willing to try out pygame for a while, but never used it, so I'm probably not going to do so.
  • Artsy stuff:
    • Gimp
    • Purely Generated stuff. I've been thinking about just coding in the stuff. But due to time limitations, I'll probably not do it.
    • Find something online. If I'm doing the jam (I've only done compo before), and if I'm doing it with a team without somebody that can do art. I'm willing to find stuff online but only if everybody 100% agrees with it (due to opting out of vote).
  • Sound:
    • bfxr.
    • audacity.
    • online. same as art, only if everybody wants it and so on.
  • Music:
    • Not sure about this one. I might look to find a tool online to help me out or something.
    • Guitar, I've got a guitar, I'm not good at it, thus it'll probably just be a comedy type of thing to be added in.
  • Teamstuff
    • I'll Probably set up a discord server or so.

Finally:

Thanks for reading all this :). I wish everybody the best of luck!
