Yay! My first Dare, hopefully

The plan is to enter number 19, hopefully the comp, but I can always shoot for the jam if I run into problems. I’m going to be using Flashpunk for the first time >_> so its going to be a fun ride, not that I’m a totally newbie when it comes to programming, I know my fair share :D.

What, will I be using?

Flashpunk

Flashdevlop

Photoshop

Photofiltre

MS Paint

sfxr

Chronolaspe

Why now?

Well you see, I need to create a portfolio for a class at my school, mind you the class has nothing to do with what I’m interested in, so I need graphics and games of my own creation, so I figured this dare will motivate me to work, and hopefully produce a decent flash game that I can host on my portfolio and get a good grade. Just wondering, if I’m going to be timelaspeing for 48 hours, how often should it take a picture? One every minute seems like a lot :X.

Good luck!

With the first 3 hours coming to an end

I’ve got an idea on the game I’m going to do, and started some primitive coding. If you don’t want to read a block of text, heres some quick bullets.

  • It’s in space, you own a space ship
  • Your foraging ahead into space over planets, the idea is that you defeat any threats around the planet, then you can “Explore” the planet, possibly discover somethings, new parts, more enemies, who knows.
  • Top down when your shooting enemies down, only able to move left or right, don’t let the enemies touch you.
  • You must kill all the enemies to make it through to the planet.
  • More planets will be unlocked as you gain more tech, or something to that effect.

I’m to tried to type about this anymore. I slapped together a crappy looking website before the dare, I’ll start posting things on there tomorrow afternoonish, I’ll hold out on giving the URL, still not working quite right. Well I’m off to bed, see everyone in the morning.

Finished… Kinda

Well, I have to say that was fun as hell, coding a game and chilling on IRC? Hell yea! Well anyways my game is Dodge and Collect! Which was originally suppose to be a top down space shooter with a planet map, you would go around collect artifacts and discovering cool things I had to cut most of it out because I ran out of time.. It barely fits the theme now .-. Well what can I say? I’ll be working on it more in the future, but tomorrow I’m sleeping in and going Christmas shopping then I better start on my homework… Don’t want to leave that for long. Well here is what I learned.

Things to do again:

Ask questions, something I did a lot.

Another Dare, I will certainly be back when the next dare roles around 😀

Hard Core work in the last 3 hours.

Most Importantly, have fun! 😀

Things not to do again:

Not to waste so much time on IRC, only talk when you need help or have give assistance.

Not start with a new language, which wont be a problem next time around, will hopefully be broken into FlashPunk.

Take time doing real life things, I spent way to long away from the keyboard, will have to try and Minimize that next time!

But yea! Check out my game here click on it, then press P to play 😀

Dodge and Collect! Timelapse

Lastly word about my game in till post comp, at which time I’ll start updating it with versions I’m working on, I finally got the timelapse up, I made the mistake of lapsing each day in a different file, so I lost quality when windows movie maker put them together :(

Dodge and Collect Post Comp Plans

For those of you wondering what I have in store for Dodge and Collect! or what my original intentions were for this game, take a seat because I’ll explain now.

Originally, you where going to have a level select menu that looked like a planet map, with your station station/HQ hovering above an Earth like planet. You would then click on a planet and you would travel there and start the mission, which was to dodge asteroids, space junk and even alien ships to collect the artifact, when you did so it would be sent back to your HQ, and was used to upgrade its systems, so you would be able to fly further (Basically unlock more levels) each level would vary in difficultly, and some levels would not have artifacts, but fake ones that did nothing. Planets you where unable to reach would not appear (Or be gray ) in till your station’s sensors could reach that far. Without all of the HUD or display options, it could have looked something like this.

Planet Map Concept

As for the story? Your piloted a prototype ship called C.O.W 142 its is an intelligent space ship that connects with the station, relaying information and sending objects back to the station, which it self is sentient. The hope was while you, the best pilot in the space force, was testing out the ship, they would be able to find a planet suitable for colonization, but having to do it on a bunch they asked you to scavenge the galaxy for parts to improve your station and the likes.

Something I thought of after the contest began and would like to add is a side scrolling part, where you would go down to the planet and possibly rid of aliens or something, allowing it to be colonized. Once it was colonized your station would be moved to space above that planet, allowing a change in the planet map to take place, and more planets unlocked.

Well, I will continue and hopefully work up to something like this, need to smooth out some of the glitches in the game currently, then I will start the planet map, wish me luck!

Ludum Dare 20

Well, I’m back to do this again for a second time! Now that I know what I can do I might be able to legit finish a game >_<

Tools:
Action Script 3 with Flashpunk

CoreDraw10 or Photofiltre

sfxr

3 hours later: Lava, Little kids and Invisible friends

Well, I’ve got the basic idea for my game down. It does involve the theme along with Lava, Little kids and Invisible friends. I have an edited tool list!

Flash Devlop and Flashpunk
Omgo Editor to make levels (Still getting to know it, but the tutorials are making it easy :) )
Photoshop CS4, might go to vector tomorrow after I clear my head.
Sfxr

Hopefully I’ll have time to put in the story, we shall see.

I really think you are making a mistake here with the lava concept. Lava is dangerous, but it just can’t emote danger like an momma orangutang who’s baby has been nabbed by you. If that big momma is after you, i’m sure you are jumping in the lava pit to die instantly as opposed to having your arm twisted off and getting beaten with it relentlessly.yeah.. ditch the lava. start fresh.

Oh Dear, RUSH

So, I’m going to join in on the MiniLD. I’ve been trying to brainstorm ideas and do a little art before the ‘Offical’ Start date but that’s it. Now I woke up to late, spent to much time doing other things and I’m not sure how much time I’m going to have. Yep, everything is off to a wonderful start. As for my tools.

Flashpunk and Actionscript 3
FlashDevelop
SFXR
Photoshop or Something for art (Not sure)

I have an idea, but I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to bring it to life. Wish me luck, and Good Luck to you!

you can do it!!! I am also in the late to start club. And I am pretty sure I can pull it off, maybe!

I’m in!

Almost forgot to make a post saying I’m in again! Hopefully this time I can make something.

Photoshop Elements 7
SFXR
Not sure what else

LD23

I’m in

I’m back and I’m certainly in for this one. Same as always

Flashpunk
Action Script 3
FlashDevop
The Gimp, Paint or something to make graphics.

Really pumped to join in on this one. Hopefully I”ll actually be able to make something this time around. Haven’t programmed in Action Script 3 for awhile now so hopefully I can make time to review tomorrow and you know, re-learn everything.

LD26

All in

Let the Ludum Daring begin! Going to enter using Python and Pygame. paint.net for graphics most likely and sfxr for sound effects!

Good luck everyone! Have fun!!!!!
