getting started

Hey all. This is my first time entering compo, after being part of some Jam entries as a graphics artist.

I was thinking about a plattformer with ultra short levels. Like literally take a few steps and you can already see the finishline.

Just set up the basic 2D-controller thanks to a tutorial by GucioDevs on youtube. Cheers!

Phew, the first day.

After struggling through getting Animations from Blender to Unity, I got all the basic functions I need for the game implemented.

You can jump, die, respawn and finish a world.

I'm pretty happy with my barebones plattformer. Now I've got a full day for sounds, music and contentcreation. :D

Caffein is a lovely fiend

Hardly caught any sleep. Fell asleep around 2 AM, got up at 6:30.

... time to get some 3D done.!

Can someone help me out with the image embedding though? :D

SUPER SMALL WORLDS

YO!

LD38_11.png

I finished my first solo Ludum Dare and am exhausted. The feeling of satisfaction is currently overshadowed by the angst of doing something wrong during the hosting/submitting etc.

Nonetheless 7 worlds are waiting for you!

For the time being have a dropbox link.

Love y'all! LD38_08.png

Woohey

judging.png

Wow, judging has really revitalized the Ludum Dare. So many entries, I havent seen in the past couple of days are here and profiling again. Nice, after having spent some time on feedback friends I felt like I had seen everyones games who were particulary active. But now there are so many interesting looking games again.

So, here some shameless self plugging LD38_08.png Super Small Worlds

And also visit Restless and Mother Of All Games !

Two super ambitious entries, which have barely gotten any recognition yet.

Not much else to say really, I'm stoked!

NoPowerNoTower

LD39_01.png

Honestly this LD I kinda lack the enthusiasm, I can't even really say why. But I'm confident I'll get a game done - if not as Compo surely as Jam.

Systems done: - Basic Enemy (Unity NavMesh) - Basic Tower - Walls (NavMeshObstacles) - Placement of Buildings - Early Version of the Maintheme

Systems to be done: - UI - Energymanagement - Waves increasing in difficulty - Mainmenu - more Towers, more Enemies - more Graphics

Slaughter.png

Also I got through the whole slaughter for the first time - the statistics pie really helped to keep motivation.

The most interesting theme I encountered was "cold". It's a simple suggestion which immediately brings pictures to my mind and is flexible to create a variety of themes and topics dependending on the angle you go at it. You can look at it from the survival standpoint, the thematics of coldrelated events like the often mentioned Christmas or the sheer feeling of being cold.

And as a bonus there never has been a similar theme for ludum dare. There were just a handful of similar suggestions like "ice" or "arctic" but all in all cold was unique, so I hope it get's a chance against the big and often repeated topics.

Speaking of! The big three I noticed:

If you suggested "something, something color!" - than I gave your suggestion a go ahead.

If you suggested "something, something time!" - than I slaughtered your suggestion.

If you suggested "something, something audio!" - than I slaughtered your suggestion.

Also there was the topic of an imaginative sport, which I came around after a while. My Topics where "Mechanical Monstrosities", "Fix Your Game" and... I honestly forgot the third one.

Oh well, what was your favorite suggestion, that wasn't one of your own?

Ultra Rumble Carnage aka Shitty Racer

Carnage_01.png

So yeah, the idea is to have 200 little carnage cars going on a rampage in destructable city and you are one of them.

Spend the day trying to make wheelcolliders work just to finally give in and script something with regular capsule colliders.

Still, having never done either car physics or AI, I was kinda surprised that the latter was done in an hour while the first took pretty much the entire day.

The Screenshot shows the little pathfinding for the individual waypoint nodes. :)

Crappy Video-Footage of my shitty racing game. :)

we did it frens!

Congrats to everyone who made it.

Compo is as always exhausting for this coding noob, but I feel bliss!

And got through the slaughter - just didnt really came around for an "I'm In" Post.

I hope everyone's gonna have a neat ludum dare!

Theme-Complaints

I visited the profiles of the latest theme-complainers. Oddly enough of those only one has taken part in more than 2 jams.

Kinda makes me think, that those who are overly critical of themes maybe just lack the experience of what can actually work as a theme.

I'm in and why it's good to be lenient

Slaughter.png

So there are always people who show their slaughter charts, where they killed of about 95% of the themes. I made this little graphic to show why that's a bad thing.

To read the graphic a couple of things are important:

  1. There are no objectively good themes that everyone's going to pick. Every themepick comes down to personal preference in the best case and chance in the worst case.

  2. There are more theme-suggestions than voters. If we took the ideal case, which would mean anybody who picked suggestions also votes for all themes we'd still have three times the themes than voters.

In this overly simplified example I chose to show the voting process for 6 voters and 18 themes. So that would be the absolute ideal case.

Slaughter_Importance.png

See how the first variant fails to generate any meaningful data? Even putting the entire first set ontop of the second one would barely impact it, even though the same amount of people voted.

So - the conclusion I came to is, that if you vote to sparsely you'll just waste your time because your vote will impact the result extremly little if you can't generate enough overlap.

Because the slaughter-process is long and arduous certain random factors like fatigue will inevitable creep in - the stricter you vote the more impact those random factors will have.
