A first time for everything

Befor I was forcing myself to dare my ludum, I decided that I also want to make my first video on youtube. So I made a timelapse of my Ludum Dare Weekend.

You can watch it on my channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTb9nI3Ic95v8pMkslX9Yiw

What lies beneath the Lich

For this Ludum Dare we decided to make a game genre we wouldn't have made otherwise... So we decided that we wanted to try a cookie clicker. All we knew was you need to click on stuff AND everything needs some big input feedback.

I was responsible for the programming in Unity and just wanted to share some invisible systems in place behind the scenes.

Branching Story System:

I build a system, that can support the branching storylines and that unlocks the buildings on that story path. YES! The buildings change when you take a different path. unknown.png

Soul Economy System:

The spawn rate of the souls is equal to your decisions you make... Meaning that if you take a path where the Lich is good you will get more pink souls and if you follow the dark side you will see more violett souls.

Soul Draining:

If you click on souls you drain them for their essence, that is shown by the saturation of the souls slowly decreasing and becoming more and more lifeless. Souls.png

Others:

There is a great variety of different systems in place and I am so greatful for my team that pushed me over my comfort level and helped me keep the sanity alive. Without you I couldn't have done the magic of the clicker game.

Conclusion:

In retrospect I am thankful that we made a clicker game, so that I can check that on my list. And I have so much more respect for people who make those sort of games, because the mechanics seem so simple, but when I delved deep into the world of clicking I learned the importants of input feedback in every corner of the game.

If you've got time on the hand, we'd appriciate some feedback on the game:

Epoch

Check it out: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/epoch

Because life struck us for the past two weeks we didn't get any chance to play and rate your games... But I'm very excited that I try to fit as many games in my spare time as I can during the next two weeks.

Stuck in a loop was my 3rd and Tobi's 1st ludum dare... He was very happy to finaly do a game jam. So we sat down and made Epoch. I am so proud of what he accomplished with unity and he implemented some realy out of the box solutions for amazing features. For example the time reverse system he build is lightweight and offers a great starting point for further modification.

That said - We would really appreciate some feedback for our project, so that we can learn and grow from it.

The last 8! and Character Design Choices

As the time progresses we are missing 8 more votes for a total of 20 votes :D So if you want to help us out with some feedback check out epoch: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/epoch

When we were brainstorming we decided that the main character should be a mad scientist - like Doc Brown or Rick. 42021c33198c97167fe067c4e0d7f575.jpg ac5152b9f7f50781b2b01e35463fc4e6.jpg

We kept the character design within that style range and made everything much rounder and cuter. Epoch_03.PNG

Having references helped a lot with creating the character and the whole world around it. Time went by and we were thinking a little more about what this characters traits are. We wanted a character, that has achieved a bunch and is close to finishing his final sciency project. The character should act like he has seen it all (not surprised by the weirdest things) and finally wants some rest. We tried to get that attitude across by writing the voice over with that in mind. For example - we had a lot of fun fooling around with 'What would the character say' - the word AGAIN~ was a recuring theme and so we decided to highlight it by bringin it up every now and then.

In the end - we simply had a lot of fun creating the character for epoch and we would like to know what are your design choices for characters during a 48hrs. jam? Are there any or to many?

Cheers~

Developing a pancake based game

Play - Deep Fried Pancake!

Hey Raphael here, the developer of Deep Fried Pancake!

This game jam was something really special for me because me and Inka wanted to build a small game, that we could achieve without any stress and breaks throughout the whole jam. We decided to google search for deep for the theme - BIG MISTAKE! - Nah! not really, because one of the first results was deep frying so we decided to roll with that, after all previous brainstorming brought us to nothing exciting (and food related).

We decided to make the player a pancake that has the get floured, egged and breaded and finally jump into a deep fryer.

Unbenannt.PNG

The development went amazingly smooth with some amazing math problems - that I never had before. It was just a delight. We wanted the controls to feel wonky but not out of the players hands and I think I achieved that. The controls depend on the rotation of the pancake and simulate somehow the airflow beneath the "Wings" of the pancake. airflow.PNG

The feature I am most exited about is the stickyness of the pancake if you hit a critter it will stick to you until the end of the game and I love how it looks, when there are bazillion flies stuck to you.

Also something I wash happy to include was a leaderboard - the first 100 places will be shown in the game.

So there was this happyland of emotions - except for the last 2 hours of development. There we realized after the first build, that the resolution we chose was to high for a web build. So we had to change the UI 2 times to make it at least fit in most browsers. There is still and issue in some, that it will cut of the top of the UI, but you still can play the game and it won't affect the gameplay that much.

If you got curious now about the game, hop over to our page and give it a try. We would appreciate some feedback about the game.
