Proof of concept

Chain reaction? Hahah yeah right, more like things blowing up and blowing more things up.

ludumscreen1.png

Hell yeah! Purple things fly on the screen, player shoot, purple things blow up, purple bits come out, hit more purple tihngs, they blow up.. a chain reaction!

(LOL I forgets to say to drags game.dcb onto fxi.exe.. stupid fenix interpreter!.. what the hells? Get back to making your game!)

More pretties!

Multi-layered parallax star field? CHECK!

Big player explosion with screen shaking and shockwave? CHECK!

Score system? CHECK!

Some custom made sound effects? CHECK!

…. and other miscelanious tit-bits. Don’t let the screenshot put you off, it looks great in motion!

Score: 86800 ! :)

Progress?

I have finished all the weapons and enemies, added shields and lots of other crazy stuff.

ludumscreen4.png

ludumscreen5.png

Again looks better in motion, download game so far here if so inclined: http://myrmidonprocess.com/ludum/Ludum10d.rar

(Windows bins, z to fire, arrows to move. Keys 1-7 summons things.)

Didn’t finish, got pretty far though…

Hey, well that was a great 48 hours, the first time I’ve actually seen Ludum Dare to the end and had something that I thought was pretty good.

The theme of chain reaction was not an overly easy one to come up with something original. I didn’t. Haha.

The gist is – When you shoot an enemy, the enemy explodes and breaks into pieces which kill other enemies and so on.

But there aren’t really enough enemies most of the time in the level for it to be obvious, and too many enemies and it becomes even more impossible than it already is.

Either way, here is the first level of Colon:F. I wanted to have more sound effects and have a boss by the end, but I didn’t get time. :( Oh well, I got most of what I wanted done. Not like you’d ever have got to the boss anyway.

Windows bins are downloadable here: http://myrmidonprocess.com/ludum/Ludum10final.rar

Thanks to everyone for your help. (Those that did help!)

I’m glad there is no boss. This has to be one of the hardest shooters I have played :)

Tower? :(!

Well yesterday I was all “welp, I don’t want to make one for Evolution”

So all night I was trying to work out an idea for it – and came up with something awesome!

Then I wake up and find out it’s tower? RAWRG

Oh well, I’m doing something anyway – here is desk.

Nomming cornflakes – BORING BREAKFAST IS BORING

My desk

Tags: desk, deskphoto, foodphoto

I am behind!

I have a basic level editor, some tiles and a good idea of the direction my game is gonna go.

In the year something-or-other, a huge tower has been taken over by a hostile alien species. No one has been able to make any contact to anyone inside the building, and everyone sent in… Never comes out.

After 3 days of throwing lambs to the slaughter, the military decides to send you, a yippie-ki-yay-mofo, has been brought out of retirement to erradicate every alien in the tower. Floor one awaits.

The game is going to have a huge horde of aliens running around. Due to the ridiculous weapons I’m planning aliens wont just die – they’ll explode.

Anyone who has played the likes of Alien Breed and similar games will know what to expect.

Here’s my rudamentry editor –

Curiously my original plan was for an alien breed clone. Called Tower Assault. 😀

edwardoka: Are you aware that the sequel for Alien Breed was called “Alien Breed: Tower Assault”? A little bit of subconscious naming there I think!

Bedtime restime

Although my screenshots don’t look like much progress, I have got a lot futher.

My game has been combined with rouge-like sight-stuff. You can’t see anything beyond the current room unless you open doors, at which point the room beyond and all it’s nasties are showed to you. (Including a nifty progressive flood-fill effect).

I’ve managed to get my guy running around, all my level graphics, including decals, loading and displaying. All doors working, level switching working. My guy shoots (and leaves shells lying around too).

I took a small break and one point and managed to do a little industrial loop and some ambience, as well as a couple of sound effects. (I use Propellerhead’s Reason for all sound.)

Tomorrow I’ll start adding enemies – that’s when the fun really begins!

Oh I wonder what is behind this door.

Oh just another corridor.. But stairs too! Onward to the next floor!

Purple Reign?

Purple Reign – A love letter to awesome games.

Of course I didn’t finish!

So I didn’t manage to put more than one enemy in, or add any more than one weapon. (I spent most of the day doing pathfinding, and they still run around in circles in some situations!)

What I did come up with was a 6 level demo of something that may become an even better game, as it stands it’s very playable!

Windows binaries are here: http://myrmidonprocess.com/ludum/12/PurpleReign.rar

It comes with a readme to tell you how to play.

Thanks for another awesome weekend everyone!

[EDIT]

Turns out the dev tool I used has a ridiculous bug in Vista where it attempts to create a full screen window but most of the time just crashes. If you can’t play download this patch which simply just forces windowed mode. It might fix a couple of other crashes too.

I spent an hour or two after work borrowing one of the Vista machines trying to fix this bug, but to no avail. There seems to be some sort of overflow with text printing that I can’t do anything about.

Yeh, I got caught on the Vista bug too. Runs fine using Wine under Ubuntu 8.04 though ! Sweet game.

PyCatcher – Another timelapsy program

I decided that for this LD I wanted to do a Timelapse. I wanted a timelapse program that

  • Ran natively on Linux.
  • Produces a screen shot of the desktop with an image of my webcam inline – not the other way round.
  • Be something that I can start in a terminal and forget about.
  • Not spit out a movie at the end and decide on what format or quality it should be – instead it should give me a bunch of images in a numbered sequence that I can then concatenate with ffmpeg or something myself.

So I wrote PyCatcher, poking it for half an hour every day for the past week. I got my webcam displaying inline last night, so while it’s not as feature rich as I have planned it does work.

If this sound relevant to ones interests you can grab it here- http://github.com/Fiona/pycatcher/tree/master

This Ludum Dare I’ll be using PyCatcher for timelapse and writing my game in Python/Pygame using my Pygame-Fenix library to aid development.

Thanks for sharing this with the community, I hope it makes a few more timelapse videos! I won’t be using it personally, because I’m on mac, but I’m hoping to use Snapz to record a video.

I swear I am doing something

Here see, I have a tile editor that saves and loads and stuff!

That’s most of the battle I swear D:

(Someone will pay dearly for this choice of theme..)

The continued adventures of roads as a theme

Now I have three layers of stuff drawing properly… It’s about time I got the player in there I think..!

Nice! Reminds me a little of SimCity Classic :)

Day one is a done

Just out for a nice drive around the city in my car…

Huh? What’s all the commotion?

Zombies??

IN MY CITY?

AH HELL NAW

Left4Bread!

You play four old age pensioners, during the zombie apocalypse they were left inside their carehome to fend for themselves completely oblivious to what’s going on outside.

Then disaster strikes! Ernie tried to make everyone some lovely pea and ham soup but there’s no bread left.

They take on a grand mission. To leave their home, and find the nearest shop.

And no young, green whippersnappers are gonna get in their way.

Left4Bread

Left4Bread is a game about roads and cars

And the undead.

Things happen.

Download source (requires Python 2.5 and PyGame 1.8>): http://www.myrmidonprocess.com/ludum/13/left4bread.tar.bz2 (optional update to the game library can be found here.)

Windows binaries (requires Windows): http://www.myrmidonprocess.com/ludum/13/left4bread-win.zip (Update to windows version here – need not download both)

Full story and instructions are in the readme! If you are impatient – Use arrow keys to go!

(I will post the timelapse tomorrow.)

Seriously, this is a genius name and a great concept. I’m going to boot my MacBook to Windows just to play it. 😀

Left4Bread Timelapse

Here’s the timelapse for Left4Bread.

Next time I will make webcam image bigger.

I’m hoping to optimise the library I used to write the game so it runs a bit faster, the main critisisms so far are the extremely slow speed the game runs at for most people and the “poor handling” of the car – But I think that last one can also be attributed to game slowdown.

Perhaps a postmortem will be written. Perhaps not.

– edit –

As promised I’ve updated the underlying library with a few rendering optimisations. The speed increases are almost double.

There’s no game logic at all in the library, but it’s up to you if you want to judge with or without the update. :)

Hmmm

I wonder if I can make a game without copious amounts of blood this time…

I’ll be using your friendly neighbourhood Python with my own game lib that lives on top of Pygame.

Be using my pycatcher program for timelapsin’ again. Home grown yo.

But whatever. I think about it.

Something or other

I’ve spent most of today drawing some tiles and getting super-realistic-blob-bouncing-physics to work.

Here’s all I have to show for it in screenshot land.

I promise you there’s a game here, I know what’s going to happen, how it’s going to fit into the theme and all that crap. First though I need to add particles… (They are the most important part of any game.)
