Toaster Boy Post Mortem

About Toaster Boy

This was my first Ludum Dare! I'm 11 and have been coding for a few years, mostly with Minecraft mods. I worked on Toaster Boy by myself, mostly. My dad helped me with time management and some audio work. He did voice of the kitty. The Basic premise of the game is to save the kitty by building a toppling tower up to the branch. If an object falls on your head, it's an instant death. About halfway up, a helicopter will come by and start shooting butter at you. At this point it's time to start shooting your toaster to take it down. Reaching the kitty will end the game!

What worked

I added a mini map in the last 30 minutes. My dad thought it was too hard to tell how close you were to the kitty. It could be just a few pixels off screen, but it felt like it was miles away. Once the mini map was added, you could instantly see how far, or close you were.

What didn't work

At first we tried to keep the falling props active in physics. This caused the tower to be almost impossible to climb as the objects would fall and push around the other props. We changed this to be half a second before the prop locked into place. This ended up being the final mechanic.

The helicopter started right away at first. It was hard enough to get going building the tower for new players, so it made sense to have the difficulty ramp up the higher you get. As a bonus, this increase in difficulty urges you to try harder as you almost get there.

What I learned

I learned a lot. I learned how to use lists and arrays to get the props and toast spawning properly. Having clones of objects was a new thing for me. I had to think outside of the box and at a larger scale than just one thing at a time. I had to think about what would be next and how it would fit in. My dad taught me a lot about time management and scaling back on ideas that would require much more time.

28 Ratings

LD41Image.png

Thanks for all the support so far on Toaster Boy. This was my first Ludum Dare and I am really excited that I got up to 28 Ratings already! I have plans to make Toaster Boy even better after Ludum Dare! I've also been working on plans for an iOS version, too!

We are in!

We are going to be doing LD42!

Start of day 2

My idea is to make a game where your phone is running out of space and you need to keep it from running out of space, but you keep getting emails and texts with videos and images which you need to delete while keeping an eye on your space left! Today I need to finish the email menu and get notifications working. Also everyone remember to take breaks every once and a while!

End of day 1

Preview 1.gif Did some good progress today I made some sprites got the basic phone working but I still have to add more to the Email menu then get the other apps working but I'm gonna call it a night.

Swapping ideas

This is probably the worst thing I could do but I think I'm gonna have to choose another idea for my game because I don't think I have enough time to finish my current idea so yeah. Good job to everyone who already finished their game and to everyone who didn't, don't give up!

LD 43

Almost the end of day one

Screen Shot 2018-12-01 at 9.03.13 PM.png

Almost nearing the end of day one and so far I can say that I've gotten at least 30% of the mechanics done.

My main idea for this game is that you have a limited amount of points to put towards skills like jumping attacking and running. So you are sacrificing certain actions for others. And you need to get to the end of several levels to win the game. I don't actually know if I can do this so, I'm hoping for the best.

We are in!

The last time we’ve published a game for LD was 41 so we are hoping to publish another one this time! * Engine: Unity * Art: Photoshop * Sounds: sfxr

Day 1 almost over!

I'm doing this by myself this time and it's going pretty well right now.

LD44-1.gif

Done: - Finish most of the graphics. - Program the player movement system. - Finish item interaction.

To do: - Add win and lose screens. - Make music and sounds. - Add shopping list.

End of day 1

I have achieved all of what I wanted today, I hope I make it in time for the compo deadline. For now: SLEEP

Shopping sucks the life out of you

Literally! In "Shopping sucks the life out of you" each item you buy costs you years of your life. You need to get the items on your list but be careful if you get too old you'll die!

In “Shopping sucks the life out of you” you need to get things on a shopping list. But there is a twist. Each item you put in your cart takes years off your life, you need to get as many items as your can without getting to old.

We are in!

After entering a game into Ludum Dare 44 compo we are going to be doing a jam game this time. It was a good experience and I am happy with what I made in that time limit but I now know that I need more time to polish and test my games. Excited to see what the theme is!

Server Error is published!

You are a Utubez star and you get an email stating that all of your videos have been deleted due to a Server Error.

You need to make more videos using your "Top of the line" computer and applications.
