I am actually in a similar situation in terms of game engine choice. I am very used to Unity, but might go ahead and try to piece something together with Unreal. Try it, still feels weird to me, but I really want to try something new this LD.

LD34

Finally its done!, Yggshroom!

banner

after long and tiring day, finally its done, probaby not as good and polish as i want it to be

but you know, whatever, i actually quite proud because this time my spriting job quite good (even tho couple of them i still need reference)

the code work still really messy, it seems i’m not improve much on coding, need to learn more in the future

next LD i’ll try to make the music by my own!, now i still use the randomly generated music, do i need a midi keyboard for this?, hmmm

you can try it here , please leave your comment and critic 😉 http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-34/?action=preview&uid=52500

Mobile version of Yggshroom?

So….after reading all of the post/comment on my Ludum Dare page, i really considering to make a Mobile version of Yggshroom.

there will be LOT of changes and improvement from previous version, and also this will be not only for mobile, but i’ll upload it on itch.io too

It’ll be free with ads (still considering this)

heres a screenshot from the main menu:

Untitled-3

mainmenu

yeah, i know, it is somewhat obnoxious looking menu screen, but of course its just temporary, i will improve and minimize it so its no this crowded

as for the game itself, still not quite done, some already done correctly i think, i already add more enemy variation, coins drop, etc, but still need LOT of work for it to be a “marketable” product 😀

so yeah, if you interested you can visit my personal web (just for s*it and giggle) and if you not yet played yggshroom, you can try it here.

thank you guys who played, rate and comment on my game, i really appriciate it, i’ll try to improve the game based on you guys comment

cheers

LD36

Obligatory “I’m In!” Post from me (LD 36) :D

obviously…i’m in! 😀

My 3rd LD, the last one i join is LD 34, hopefully the theme will be as fun as LD34 😀

I probably will use Unity3D engine for the game, cause…well, thats the only engine i familiar with for making a game, planning on using libGDX or Haxeflixel, but still need lot of practice on both of them, not quite comfortable yet to use for LD.

For art and stuff, will use GIMP or Paint.net, both is the only software that i ever used for light sprite drawing, since i’m not a good artist….or at least never try to be an artist lol

for Music and SFX will use the music/sound generator that i usually use.

can’t wait for weekend!, have fun everyone! 😀

End of LD 36 Compo

banner-300x71

It was AWESOME !, i love the theme, and probably one of my favourite theme so far, and i only participate in Ludum Dare 3 times, LD 32, 34 and 36

Theres lot of people already playing and give me feedback about my game, lot of suggestion about future development of the game and such, its makes me excited and also gives me lot of idea, if….i want to develop in further, lot of work, and other back log project needed to be done :(

this is not exactly the best game i’ve made so far for LD compo, but tbh, its the most effective, clean in term of management and coding, even tho if you look up the source code its still looks like spagehtti 😀

but so far i’m quite satisfied with the finish product, have some bugs, but i fixed it quite fast, and probably now all known bugs already fixed

will make post mortem soon-ish, if i have spare time 😀

now….back to workdesk T__T

LD 42

Progress (or the lack thereof)

Phew, its already about 1+ day, so far so good...well at least i think so

this is my 4th LD compo, and for this time, i chose to ditch Unity engine, and trying out another framework/engine for fresh and new experience, and i happen to choose HaxeFlixel !

i have very limited time learning it for the sake of LD jam, but honestly, its surprisingly fun and wholesome experience, while i also can argue that the documentation can be tad better lol

its a very very basic "action" game, with a bit twist on the LD42 theme itself lol, i'm not a very creative person, this is the only thing i can came up with

i also making a "lore" for the game to trying blend it with the tutorial, so it'll explain the basic story, explaining mechanic in the story point of view, also trying to justify the twist within the theme

thanks to gamefromscratch for the basic HaxeFlixel tutorial, and also of course everyone on HaxeFlixel discord, you guys are awesome !

Post-Mortem : Demonologist

Hello everyone, this is a post-mortem of my game for LD42 Demonologist, you can try it here : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/demonologist

thubmnail.jpg

anyway first thing first, sorry for any grammar error, english is not my native languange and also i made this at 00.00 cause i can't sleep lol

lets start from something that all of us done first...well at least i did

1. THEME

honestly speaking....i dislike this theme, its too spesific for me and also quite frankly too generic as well, but probably its just me, i'm not very creative person in the first place, it take me quite literally 4 hours to finalize my game concept within my understanding and twist of the theme, but it also where it went wrong, i will explain later in this article.

2. GAMEPLAY

After i finalize the concept, i go straight to gameplay, on previous LD, almost every game that i made always have this slow and "boring" pace of gameplay (you can check my complete previous LD game here : http://ludumdare.com/compo/author/ghen/)

This time i want to make something different, something more action-y and involving, and i just happen to chose another engine this time other than Unity3D, after some googling and trying, i laid my eyes on HaxeFlixel, and this is where Basic HaxeFlixel Tutorial from Gamefromscratch comes in, after following the full tutorial, i just realize "hey...i can make a full game out of this" ( bill wurtz reference anyone? ).

3. GRAPHICS

For graphics, i already know this coming  , i can't draw at all, i already tried and fail misserably, so i said to myself "what can i do to make it good, while also fit with timeline and my crappy drawing skill", Atari 2600 comes to mine instantly, i based the art from the Indiana Jones on Atari 2600, while the artwork on the Main Menu i try to mimic and "copy" menu art style from most DOS game and again failed miserably.

-------------------------------- WHAT WENT WRONG -----------------------------

1. THEME

And this is where it went wrong, i want to make something different, something that still fit in the theme but not so obvious, i want people to realize it after playing it, thats why i came up with the idea of body heat is essentially the resource and your body heat tolerance is the inventory/storage , when you fill up your inventory/storage, you died, which means you running out of space

cause i'm being a smart-ass, in the end not many people understand/realize it, it make sense in my head, but probably not in other people, or probably how i deliver my concept is the one is wrong or ineffective.

2. GUIDE/TUTORIAL

I put a quite a lot unconventional mechanic in my game, thats why i feel i need to make quite extensive guide, but just to make it like a point-to-point just feels lazy, so i want to make it interesting so player can read it with hope that they're not getting bored, but the fact is my approach actually defeat my purpose/goal, it become a wall text with a lot of grammar error, cause people not too keen to read it.

3. ANIMATION

I try to put animation on everything, but in the end i don't have enough time to do it, and also out of idea on HOW since my main reference is Indiana Jones on Atari 2600 theres literally nothing animated on that game lol, and i can't spend any more time to find more reference, at least that what i think at that time.

4. GAME FEEDBACK

This is a mistake on my part, game feedback actually on very low on my priority, i try to add it and try on on some activity that i feel more important, but in the end i skip a lot of it, because i feels it either too distracting or just simply ugly, and in the end i have no time left.

-------------------------------------- CONCLUSION -----------------------------------

I honestly don't know how i feels about my entry, at one side i'm actually satisfied on what i can make and achieve in mere 48 hours with just me, but on the other side i feels like i can work harder and do more, add more, and playing a lot of real quality compo submission here enforce that mindset sigh

so thats it from me everyone, hope you like it, and hope this give you insight from my part on my process for LD42.

thank you for reading this post-mortem, and have a nice day

Thank you everyone for your support !

LD42 coming to an end, before its all end,i personally want to say thank you to everyone !, thanks for the all great comments and great constructive criticism for Demonologist, with that i know what lacking and what to improve, hopefully i can further improve my work for next LD.

With what i learned and received from LD42, i already planned to make a new game within the same "world" and "lore" as Demonologist, but with whole different gameplay and mechanic, but still quite faithful to the original, i still finalize the concept and everything, and not make much progress on it either cause of hectic work hour, thus sadly no preview or demo so far, but if you are interested and not yet play Demonologist, you can try it here : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/demonologist

I had great time and lot of fun with this LD, playing bunch of great game with great ideas and mechanic, its been a wholesome experience, hopefully all of us can join and play again on LD43.

have a nice day everyone !
