LD18

Burning Rangers

I’m not sure if I’ll go with that game title, since it’s kinda taken, but here’s another screen:

Oh awesome to see dirt and water now!

More and better fire… art.

I tried out some Gimp effects to make the level prettier and to make the fire look less like red circles.  I’m also animating the fire through three images.  I’m pretty surprised my computer can handle this!  There’s a lot of spawning and scaling going on, and those things spread like…  I’m not gonna say it.

It’s way past my bedtime.

ld18 - nice new level art

Worst feeling ever

Want to know the worst feeling ever?  When your battery dies and upon reboot you notice that “gameloop.cpp” has been truncated to 0 bytes…

Well, I’ve had to rewrite that file, so I lost a bit of time.  The (very) good thing is that it was possible to rewrite the file within the competition time!

I must say, I enjoyed picking up the enemies and letting them fall to their bloody death.

New England Meetup video

In case you didn’t see the comment on PoV’s meetup post (or if this one’s easier to find), here’s the video of the New England Ludum Dare 18 Meetup.

Good stuff. Jonny D, HybridMind, and billknye were able to attend. We wound up at a great place, Me & Ollie’s in Portsmouth, NH, and much fun was had.

Wish I knew about this ahead of time! Would have loved to attend. I’m from Lowell, MA so it’s not far at all. Where did you guys organize this so I know where to look 4 months from now?

Time to vote for a theme! MiniLD 23 On Its Way!!

Hosted by yours truly, Jonny D…  MiniLD 23 will be a good time (see below).

MiniLD 23 will begin at 9pm EST (2am UTC) on Friday, January 21st (moved up from the 28th due to conflict with Global Game Jam).  It will end at the same time on Sunday, January 23rd.

MiniLD 23 begins [fergcorp_cdt_single date=”Fri, 21 Jan 2011 19:00:00 -700″]

Until then, you can vote on the main theme.  There will be a sub theme announced as well when the mini compo starts.  There will be either an immense amount of groaning or excitement, since your choices for the main theme are taken from LD 19’s Round 3 list.

That’s right! Vote here!! And like the monkey said at the fruit playoffs: Go bananas!

Having to make a game around Graph Theory actually sounds like an excellent challenge. Sadly, I’ve almost no hope of getting a whole weekend freed up to make a game.
11. Jan 2011 · 09:13 UTC
Argh,…you know that global game jam is at the same weekend?!
11. Jan 2011 · 14:20 UTC
What dertom said. The choice of date is really unfortunate here. Maybe the weekend before that? I imagine you had some reason to choose that weekend though, but I think you’ll lose many participants to GGJ.
12. Jan 2011 · 00:52 UTC
Either up a week or back a week would be preferable, I’d love to do the mini-LD but the GGJ wins out.
12. Jan 2011 · 13:34 UTC
Any date works for me, GGJ is too far away for me to get to and I never get Saturdays off anyway :)
12. Jan 2011 · 13:41 UTC
I might do it if kittens win 😉
12. Jan 2011 · 16:05 UTC
What are the Mini LD rules? Are they just the same as the normal LD? I’m thinking of juggling GGJ and the Mini LD…
12. Jan 2011 · 18:06 UTC
I was wondering about the mini LD rules too. I know they used to be on the wiki but that’s moved and I can’t find them anymore. Any ideas?
13. Jan 2011 · 01:07 UTC
Like jovoc says. See my comment above for another wording.
13. Jan 2011 · 19:26 UTC
Cool! Thanks guys
16. Jan 2011 · 09:52 UTC
As you ask: If you move the miniLD the weekend before I would be in! Actually you already set a counter or so and other people might see it as fixed so maybe you should just leave it as it is. On the other hand if it would be a week earlier it would be a good test to see if you are well perpared for ggj 😀 It’s your call!

16. Jan 2011 · 17:44 UTC
I would vote to move it the weekend after or before.
16. Jan 2011 · 22:39 UTC
That seems like enough of a preference for me. It will be moved earlier by a week to Friday, January 21st. Thanks for letting me know what you’re thinking, guys!

I think I’m in for this one.

I’m in. LD19 was in the middle of finals so I had to drop out, and classes are just starting so I shouldn’t have much work to do this weekend.

One more tip: Whatever you do, don’t emulate half a Sega Master System during the contest.
17. Jan 2011 · 19:26 UTC
Oh, at the old date I would not have had school on the following monday, which would have given me some extra time… Still looking forward to it. First LD for me. Checking out that LD survival guide postet by Jonny D.

Oh no! I just remembered that I have to go out of state for a college interview over the new announced weekend. No way I’ll be able to do this miniLD.
19. Jan 2011 · 16:23 UTC
I will definitely be in this one. Kind of. Well, I’ll probably be working on a game anyway, and I’ll consider it an “entry”.

Okay, I’ve got some ideas for the voted-on theme. I somehow mind these a lot less than I did when they were the 3rd round of themes for LD19.

MiniLD #23 Go!

Here goes!  The Title of your game must be a Year!  Feel free to use the round 6 variant: Game based on a year.

And the subtheme: Spring Physics
If you’re not doing an action game, I suppose you’ve got to be creative! :)

Good luck to everyone out there.  See you at the end of the 48 (or during if you’ll be in IRC)!  Go LD, go!

I recommend this article regarding spring physics.

Interesting sub-theme, I cannot wait to see what everyone comes up with. I want to wish all participants good luck, and please remember to save often, and back up your data regulary. I am off to sleep, but will start on this in the morning.
22. Jan 2011 · 00:26 UTC
Was hoping for a better theme. Oh well, there’s always next month.
22. Jan 2011 · 03:25 UTC
Thanks PoV! Good resource…
22. Jan 2011 · 03:25 UTC
Man, I think this theme is too vague…you can really pick anything you want. In my opinion, Ludum Dare themes should be slightly restrictive, so they engender more ideas. I also think titles which are years are uninteresting titles. 😛
22. Jan 2011 · 03:32 UTC
What’s wrong with you people? How could you not pick Kittens? It would have been awesome with the sub-theme too…
Devenger
22. Jan 2011 · 12:59 UTC
Sub-theme is disappointingly restrictive, so I’ll give this a miss unless I’m struck with inspiration soon.
22. Jan 2011 · 22:21 UTC
It’s only restrictive if you aren’t clever and/or willing to “reinterpret” it. I’m using the spring equation (F = -kx) in a dynamic difficulty system.

And that music video is very funky indeed. :)

My Mini Idea – Will I get the time?

I came up with a fine idea, but I had a full day workshop yesterday in another state and I have to go pick up my wife from yet another state today.  At least here’s a mockup:

MiniLD #23 Pretty Much Over!

Well, looks like time is up, but don’t worry if you need a bit more time to wrap things up.  This is for you, after all!  However, if we have to name your game 2012, then there’s a problem.

The things I’ve seen out there so far look pretty sweet.  Good job, all!

LD20

It’s Dangerous to Play Alone!

Can I swing that?  Probably not.

Anyhow, I thought of a nice idea…  But as usual, I like to keep my secrets until I have something to show for it.  See ya tomorrow.  Maybe there will be a screenshot. 😉

Some progress

Here it is so far.  There’s been a lot of distractions today which I’d rather not talk about.  Suffice to say there are bad bugs outside!

In my game, four players can throw each other around.  I’m not sure yet how it will turn out for voting if I require four players.  I can’t even test it well!

More than just blocks now!

It’s moving along slowly…  I have level loading and animations in.  Now I need some goal triggers.  Once I have that and some custom control setup, I’ll be ready to pump out some fun, playable levels.  It’s a puzzle platformer, so the level design will be enjoyable.  :)  It’s likely that the game will feature different levels depending on the number of people playing.

A name would be nice, but my preschool kids have only been able to come up with “Throw Jump”, “Throw Everything”, and “Backpack Throw Jump Everything”.  With that kind of creativity, I’m sure it’ll have a name sometime next month…  and it might involve peanut butter and jelly.

I want to play this!

If only…

It appears that I didn’t get enough time on my game.  That’s okay though.  Lots of other things demanded my time (like screaming kids), but I managed to make a really fun game.  Really, me and my wife were having more fun with this than with all of my previous entries.  It’s not ready for the compo and I might not bother with the jam because work starts again tomorrow.  That means there will be a post-compo version for sure!  Stay tuned to my website or the LD planet.

I had a great time, as usual!

Here are some screens to part with.  Behold, “Don’t Blow It”.

LD23

LD 23 progress (tiny world war)

So, I guess my game is going to be “tiny world war”.  I have movement, collisions, projectiles, and hitpoints working.  The plan is to make it multiplayer (local for now) and have some AI going on.  Here’s my simple screenshot:

tiny world war – day 2

Lots of work done: Simple AI, teams, some graphical effects, ammo, and such.  I have to make some actual levels soon.  It’s going well, so I think I will actually be able to polish an entry!

tiny world war – almost there

It’s almost over!  I updated the graphics to a pixellated style, which surprisingly I’ve never done before.  There’s sound now, too.  I just had to fix a long-standing issue I had with SDL_mixer. :)

tiny world war

All done!

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-23/?action=preview&uid=654

I managed to finish in time, adding menu music, a level, basic splash screens, multiple weapons, sound effects, and more animations.

I had to trim some features to make it, but everything turned out just fine.  The final product is definitely worth it.

It’s still not up to my standards of originality, but it’s fun regardless.  I would have liked to add secondary weapons, so we’ll see what happens to it in my spare time.  I was able to build a reasonable level.  It’s not that pretty and was annoying to make, so I only made one… :(  I was really hoping to make a couple more, like desert and river levels.  Also, “tiny world war” is a demonstration of my latest framework using the SDL_gpu library to drive 2D OpenGL accelerated graphics and using Box2D for collision physics.

Overall…  Success!  I’d like to put networking into a future version, which will be a good preliminary step toward doing the same to my current main project, Don’t Blow It!  When that does happen, there may be a new release on my website.

See ya guys next time!
