It's almost submission hour
That means time for the most dreaded part of the jam: rewriting the tutorial after playtesters had no idea how to play. Happens to us almost every Ludum Dare...

Ready to arrange some bus passengers so they annoy each other as little as possible? It may be harder than it sounds.

EDIT: Great, now ldjam refuses to load screenshots. Guess I'll try again tomorrow...

Has anyone figured out how to prevent school kids from plopping down their bag on the seat next to them when getting onto the bus? If you have, head over to https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/54/packed-ride and explain it to the school kids in our game, as it seems like they haven't gotten the memo.

This is just a friendly reminder to test if your project exporting works as intended before the jam starts. Nobody wants to work an entire weekend just to miss the deadline due to project export problems

Sometimes trying to replace placeholder models with proper ones leads to some... interesting situations.
It's the end of day 1 and we seem to have lost a texture somewhere, judging by the suspicious magenta permeating our fog. Despite that, things seem to be progressing nicely, we got camera and movement set up, enemies and minions spawning and some fancy animations. Tomorrow we're continuing onward to the actual summoning mechanics.

We uploaded a test build to the LD page by accident and now we can't seem to get rid of it. Delete button next to it doesn't do anything, the furthest I got was replacing the zipped file by one that only contains a "please download from itch" readme file.
For a while, I've been sharing the progress of organizing our team, the logistic for an in person jam and our hardware/software woes for LD56 over on Mastodon under the hashtag #RoadToLudumDare (https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/RoadToLudumDare) and I was wondering how everyone else's preparations look like? I assume it differs a lot whether you're a solo dev or a part of a team? Online vs in person?
After a lot of logistics to get all the equipment to the same location as well as a lot of networking woes to get the git server up and operational, we're ready to go!

The ducks are already waddling around the placeholder level. Despite trying our hardest not to do the same thing again, we ended up with another idea for a tile based puzzle game.
After a day of work, it seems like our ducks still tend to explode when they walk off a platform...

While gameplay is still mostly stuck somewhere in the middle of recursion induced stack overflows, the graphics for our duck game are slowly coming together.

We really tried to avoid using the submission hour time this time around, but issues with our git server prevented us from achieving that goal. Nevertheless, we managed to complete our game about helping baby ducks find their way to Momma duck on time :tada:

The ducklings might need some help navigating the island, as navigation isn't their strong point. Can you help them out? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/56/waddle

Despite the overwhelmingly positive feedback on our duckling guiding puzzle game, we did notice some patterns in the comments about what could be improved. So we went and improved it!
The new version mostly contains various fixes for things we missed when we were frantically trying to hit the deadline (floating rocks, anyone?), but also a much requested mouse based camera movement system and our game designer even snuck in a whole new level.
Haven't played Waddle yet? You can check it out here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/56/waddle

6 hours to go and we just realized that SSH doesn't work on our git server and our toaster we intended to use to make snacks as we go just fell apart.
Sounds like a great start
Despite some issues with network infrastrcture and trying a new desk setup, most of the office set up is ready to go! 🙌
Next step is setting up the software projects.

Boat controller? Done. Water shader? Written.
Now begins the endless debate whether we want a heavily stylized or a bit more realistic art style
