LD24

I’m in (like a boss)

I should be in for the first time this weekend. Been programming for almost a year, but learning quickly. I’m only 14.

Language: Java

Libraries: LWJGL and my own base-code. (See bottom of post)

Tools: Eclipse, Paint.NET, Notepad++ (Maybe), Possibly BFXR (if I can be bothered with sound), Hopefully JarSplice.

Plan: First day: Engine. Second Day: Polishing and CONTENT.

Might make a timelapse, if I have the time, but it is low-priority.

BaseCode:

I have some simple base-code that someone may find useful, but I doubt it. It’s just Utilities and a lwjgl initialiser.

I hope I finish something.

Any time other than my first LD, I would have given a +1 for Kittens, but not this time.

(By the way, I hate Kongregate for what they’re doing to this (I’m assuming) fun competition. SHAME ON THEM!)

(blatant self-advertising ahead)

Almost over. But the game isn’t…

Thanks to timezones and school, I am just about out of time. I may get around 30 min in the morning to put an ending on my game, and possibly get some quick sounds in there. It will be by no means a finished project, but I look forward to continuing development post-LD.* I had a 30 minute or so setback because my laptop crashed and deleted all my textures which had to be redone!!! Anyway, progress – Roguelike engine with secure multithreading. (Very impressed with myself on not using “synchronized” at all) – Two layers of tiles – Player inventory with 8 slots – An okay amount of tiles and items – Okay physics (for a roguelike) – Basic GUI (Hotbar with health and inventory – A way to lose the game – An enemy – Evolution (pretty cool as well) Todo: – A way to understand how to play and win. – A way to win the game – A few more items/tiles – SOUND (bfxr) – Compile into jar, exe, linux native, mac native (JarSplice) – General polishing to make the game feel finished (for now) If I have time: – Game over screen – Help Screen (probably just a png may or may not be in the actual game) *Will post a link to a development blog when everything cools down around here.

A basic win condition for roguelike is to get something deep inside and get it out.

by the way, a simple file with only “#!/bin/env java -jar your.jar” should do the trick for linux user. If they have java and the jar side by side with your file, that is.

So…

Well, I finished.

My game has a good end to it and should keep you entertained/frustrated for a while

PLAY IT. It’s fun, but very hard. If the boss is too hard,  press w once to disable automatic world updates. Press it again to switch back to normal.

Yes, there are a couple of bugs, but they are not too serious (I hope)

If anyone has trouble, feel free to comment and I will try and help.

I will keep posting updates as I progress my game post-LD.

I hope you enjoy it.

What went well:

I finished

I have a good game that can be developed further

My game is fun (for me anyway)

I had a fun weekend

What went wrong:

It’s a bit short

The boss is hard and requires complex planning with water that is uncontrolable except with lots of complex wood patterns

No actual victory, just surviving the boss is how to win

Wasted 2 hours trying to learn GUI programming with LWJGL.

Lost my textures once when my laptop crashed

School lost me 5 or so hours

No sound (because you haven’t evolved ears yet ;D)

Impossible to win if you make a mistake.

LD25

I’m In (for the second time)

I’m back for another go.

Last time (LD24) I made the game “The Gift/Curse of Evolution”, which was okay, but didn’t recieve enough votes :(

This time, I will do a few things different:

1) Use my better basecode including GUI code. (Will upload after cleanup)
2) Post more updates as I go
3) Have more time because school will be over
4) Play more games to get better Coolness
5) Attempt to get some sound effects? (highly unlikely as I have never done it before
6) Make a game with more action (Roguelike movement is LAME)

I will be using:

Language Java
Libraries LWJGL, My Basecode
Tools Eclipse, Paint.NET, (bfxr?)
Food Whatever I can find

While slaughtering themes for a few minutes, I found a few of mine, and some interesting ones too:

(Mine)
Potatoes
Hats
Guardian
Warrior
Explosions

(Interesting)
Apocalypse Kittens (upvoted =D)
(Something else that I forgot but was quite funny)

This “I’m in” post will be the first of many. REMEMBER ME AS THE ONE WHO BEGAN THE AVALANCHE! (It would be really awkward if noone else put an I’m in post up. Really really awkward)

Ready!

Okay, everything is prepared.

Chrome (using it right now), Paint.NET, Eclipse, Basecode, Notepad++ (for checklists/planning), BFXR is there if I need it, Windows Explorer…

Time to play some games while I wait ;D

So far…

In the first few minutes, I wrote code that loads an image, and sets a tile in the world based on the color.

Here is the world:

And if you zoom in, you can see what the texture for each tile is:

I’m happy it worked first time!

Back to work…

I will show you my idea soon.

A screenshot…

Here is a screenshot.

Early prototype of Idea #2.

Sat Dec 15 19-34-32 NZDT 2012

I am currently making a game where Heroes fight Villains in an attempt to destroy the other team. If possible int eh amount of time, I may be able to let people play as the Villains of Villains (aka the Heroes).
This game is inspired by my current full project and most of the core mechanics are the same or similar.

I can load levels from a PNG file using the code I created in the first few minutes (it was easier than expected).

Day 2

It is now Day 2 (for me) of Ludum Dare. (I only got 5 hours done yesterday) and I am going good.

I was really disappointed with the theme, so I failed with creative interpretation. However, I’m putting lots of work into the fun aspect, and also the art.

I may even have a working prototype out shortly.

Back to work…

What’s a villain without their minions?

Well, in this case, they would be a dead villain.

HEHEHEHEHE…

This is getting Awesome. I have finally got some inspiration back.

Memory Leaks… in Java

Just fixed a major memory leak caused by creating lots of new Direct Buffers (for LWJGL)
Now memory usage is tiny.

(I really need to switch to OpenGL 3 rendering, but now is not the time to learn)

I believe you can’t fly…

…unless you unlock the fly power.

Sun Dec 16 14-24-50 NZDT 2012

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…

etc.

…HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!…

My game is too fun

I keep on finding myself playing again and again ‘testing’ features when I haven’t actually done any code.

Must… STAY… focused…

Slay those Paladins! (I finished!)

Finished! In fact, I finished because there was nothing left to add!

Mon Dec 17 13-30-19 NZDT 2012

It’s a kind of beat-em-up/hack-and-slash platformer except with a goal in mind: Corrupt the planet with your chaos powers. The last level is quite challenging too. Even I haven’t won it yet, and that’s only level 7. If you make your own maps all the way to level 16… you will get pwned.

Yes, that’s right, you can make your own levels. From images. All you need is creativity and a painting program.

Check it out here

Have fun slaying paladins, using special powers for evil, and ultimately, poisoning a planet to the point where everything dies and chaotic forces block out the sun.
Oh, and there’s lots of blood.

ENJOY!

Play Lord of Corruption!

Mon Dec 17 13-30-19 NZDT 2012

Play it here

It is a beat-em-up hack-and-slash platformer but with extra Awesome and lots of gameplay.

You play as the new Lord of Corruption, and your mission is to corrupt planet ‘Erth’, by poisoning/killing all living things and blocking out the sun with chaos.

You can even make your own maps from .png files. (up to 16 levels can be played in a row)

Mon Dec 17 13-19-01 NZDT 2012

Please give me some ratings, as last time I didn’t get enough to have a final placing.

Lord of Corruption Post-Mortem

Well, I think I did okay this time around. Better than LD24 (my first LD)

This time I made a game called Lord of Corruption

Mon Dec 17 13-30-19 NZDT 2012

Play it here

Anyway:

What went right

I was more experienced. I have now been programming for almost 1 year. Which means I have 1.5 times as much experience as LD24.
No school. Last time school got in the way and I lost all Monday morning (timezone offset means I finish the compo on moday afternoon).
Had a simple GUI framework. Last time I tried implementing my own GUI system and wasted half of Sunday morning.
Focused on fun even if my interpretation of the theme was just… simple. Result: It’s fun, so no-one cares about the theme.
I did so well that I submitted 1 hour before the end because I was done that early.
I had just started developing a platformer engine a few days before the compo, so I was able to rewrite that, and as a result, I now have an even better engine to use for bigger projects.

What went not-so-right

No music/sound. I should try to get this going next LD.
It was too hard for some people to win.
There were a few problems with enemies bunching up at the side of the world and insta-killing you whenever you respawned.

Overall, I think it went well. ;D

LD26

Guardian II

Guardian II

Hmmm… site’s active, not too many posts, seems like a good time to advertise my in-development game!

I’ve been working on and off lately on a project called Guardian II. Guardian I was a game I made in 5 days which happened by chance to be just before Ludum Dare 25. (The game was good enough after only 3, but I added a bit more polish).

After LD25 I quickly fixed bugs and ported from Java 7 to Java 6 to allow compatibility with Mac*.

Then, later, I adapted the code from Lord of Corruption (my LD25 entry), and turned it into what is now Guardian II.

The original game was a platform/hack-and-slash/tower-defence game. You had a tower, and you had to defend it from a nearby horde of goblins. You could choose between three classes: Warrior, Archer and Assassin. Each had their own unique special attack. Goblins dropped coins, which you could collect. If you got enough coins, you could heal. If you got even more, you could hire another guardian to help you. If goblins got enough coins (stealing them from your chest or picking them up before you) then they could bring in orcs, or even trolls. It was possible to head out to the goblin base to steal their coins, but it was hard unless you were the Assassin. There was no win/lose condition. You lost when the goblins became so many you couldn’t do anything. Otherwise you just tried to get the most coins.

It wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be, but it was reasonably fun. (it would have done well in a Ludum Dare. If only I held out 1 week then I could have entered it for the jam). The new one however, takes the original idea that never really became the game, and develops it further. You now have more control over you team (and a larger team), including the ability to coordinate attack formations with commander controls. There are more characters, and more to come. It’s far far better then the original already, and it’s nowhere near finished.

So I’m hoping that it will end up a nice blend of RTS, Adventure, Hack&Slash, Platformer, and Strategy.

Guardian II is not publicly available yet, but I am letting practically anyone test as long as they give feedback. I’m just trying to see if people are interested. A public Alpha may be available over the next few weeks/months.

Anyway, thanks for reading. I recommend you go and play Guardian or Lord of Corruption if you want to see what this was like when it began.

If you want to watch the development, here is a link to my blog on tumblr.

*LWJGL 2.9.0 out just recently! Mac + Java 7 + LWJGL now works!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am the master of the potato

I always write down my theme suggestions to see if any make it into the top 100.

I just found the list, and guess what, I was the one (or one of the ones) who suggested potato.

Potato ftw!

TEAM POTATO

Team Potato Flag:
TEAM POTATO

WE WILL BE VICTORIOUS!!!

Anyone who does not vote +1 Potato is not allowed to eat any chips during the Ludum Dare, you evil people.

Tags: #teampotato, #votepotato, potato

You people disgust me.

#TeamNoPotato, you are a disgrace to the human race, and potatos too.

As a punishment, you shall not eat any chips during the Ludum Dare.

You filthy creatures!
