Ludum Dare 48

Post Jam update

Thanks again to everyone who played and rated Crashdown during the rating period. During that same time we've been taking notes of your feedback and making an updated, more polished version of the Ludum Dare prototype. This project was a ton of fun, and we all learned a ton. If you get a chance, please check out our version 1.1 and let us know what you think. You can also follow us on twitter to see whatever we all end up doing next!

When I see a game that looks interesting but requires downloading an executable

Obviously it's not feasible for everyone to make a webGL build of their game, but for me, at least, I am mostly likely to only play games that have a webGL version, and for a few reasons I would personally recommend building your game with the intention and plan to publish to webGL for a few reasons:

First: discoverability. Downloading an executable takes time and effort, and a lot of people, myself included, are going to find it way easier to click a page and get playing rather than downloading, unzipping, and then running an executable. Also...

Second: security. I had a friend who recently got hit with a pretty bad virus when someone spoofed a fellow game developer and sent him a virus disguised as a game they wanted "playtested". This kind of social engineering could happen to anyone.

My personal line in the sand is that, for the most part, I am only going to play and rate games with a WebGL version. My original version of this post was a bit overly snippy, I admit, but hopefully this one better explains.

EDIT: I re-wrote the post because it was more condescending in tone than I intended, also, uh... I have been informed that the meme I used is passive aggressive? I literally thought it was a pleading meme... I swear to god I am never using memes ever again...

10 down.

I want to rate as many games as I can, while also trying to give meaningful and detailed feedback, which is a challenge in and of itself sometimes. In order to accomplish this I am personally aiming to play and rate 10 games every day.

Did my 10 for today, now I just need my teammates to do some ratings so we can get that sweet, sweet karma, lol.

Of the 10 I played today I want to highlight a few personal favorites:

First up is bergs

This silly little platformer has you play a little guy who can freeze in place and summon another little guy that drops down on top of you. Super fun concept, very fun gameplay, and I even managed to find an exploit.

Recommend you check this one out, which you can do here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/bergs

Next up is Tower of Madness

A fun twist on an idle game that is anything but idle. Summon minions that grant you blood while managing your chaos meter (and time) and try to get a good score. I got a ranking of A with a high score of 112,547.

Go see if you can beat me (you probably can) here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/tower-of-madness

And finally, Sminer

This was my personal favorite of the 10 games I played today. Really cool minimal aesthetic, some excellent fucking JUICE and a ton of fun. I played this one several times over and had to tear myself away so I would have time to do other games.

That one you can check out here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/sminer

And if you want to check out the game that I worked on for the jam, go ahead and take a look here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/blorts-big-adventure

See you tomorrow.
