Ludum Dare 37

Thanks

cave_in

Thank you to everyone that played our game and voted. We hope you enjoyed it. This was our first Ludum Dare and we had a blast.

We are continuing to work on our game, Cave In. You can find the full version here: https://cave-in.gomix.me/

It is still in progress, but will eventually have a high score list and replays. It also has a few new mechanics that weren’t in the LD version. If you enjoyed the game and want to play it again or if you haven’t played it yet, we’d love it if you’d check it out.

Once again, Thanks.

First Sprite Done

Only finalized my idea about 2 hours ago. The sprite for the baddies is done.baddy.gif

Spawn Animation

Art almost done. Now I just have to program the damn thing. I'm thinking that at this speed, finishing for the compo is not possible.spawn.gif

Almost There

Soooooo Tired! Just have music and sound to do. Mind on static couldn't think of a title so it's now called "0|0|0|0".

Last minute question

OK, so this is my first time submitting to the compo. I have the source code (game maker file) in a .zip folder with the .exe on itch.io. Is this enough or do I need to host the code elsewhere?

Well that was a harrowing couple of hours

I'm just glad I finally got my game in. You can find it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/$34441 and here: https://infinitycore.itch.io/0000

Hurray for gifs that won't load! Youtube video is here: https://youtu.be/XwPVJ6e0iLo screenshotshooter2.png

Anyway, have fun jammers on your remaining day.

Please play my game

currently sitting at 11.75 ratings for my compo entry. I would love it if it could get the required amount. Here is the link: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/$34441 screenshotshooter2.png Thank you for all your help

Online build

My game is finally able to be played in browser. Hurray! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/$34441

Overall, this jam went well. My biggest issue in all of this was getting the game to upload before the compo time limit, but I managed in the end. The game can still be played here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/$34441

What Went Well

-The game turned out looking and sounding like I wanted. I had an idea of how to make a twin stick shooter sprite that keeps the angle of light uniform instead of just rotating a sprite without having to literally draw 360 different frames; And I am glad to see that it paid off, and next time I can even make it better.

-The game is fun. Pretty much all the feedback I've received has mentioned how the game is either well-polished or smooth and that it is fun.

-It has no bugs (that I could find). It is always nice to have a game jam game come out working as intended with no unforeseen problems. However, this could either be because of or in despite of my awful programming. I am not a programmer by any means; I know enough to get me by in Game Maker, but that is it. It isn't pretty and probably has HUGE memory leakage, but not enough that would be noticeable for this kind of game. But, what this might also mean for the game is that the code is so rigid that it can't possibly goof, even if that means it isn't very modular. Again, I don't know for sure because I went to college for game design with a concentration in art not programming.

-Though I thought of another title a few days after the jam was done, I've actually grown attached to the random title that I came up with in the spur of the mentally-drained moment. And, while "Electromite" would have perfectly sufficed for the game, I think that an obscure title that literally no one can pronounce actually gives it more character. Sure, "0|0|0|0" means absolutely nothing and doesn't tie into the theme of the game at all, but I think it's actually more memorable.

What Could be Fixed

-Programming as mentioned above

-I got some well-deserved critiques to my control scheme that deserve attention. First, the fact that you can't just hold down the fire button to shoot automatically. While I understand how it would make the game easier or less strenuous, I specifically decided on this way because it gives the game more visceral feedback in having to literally click every time you want to shoot. In the future, that option may be added, but it will still be slower than if you mash the fire button. Second, the aiming seems off. I completely agree with this, and may get around to increasing the visibility of the reticule to try and alleviate the issue.

-It doesn't use the theme very creatively. For this jam I decided to make a fun, polished game instead of spending too much time on utilizing the theme in an interesting way. In the end, it paid off, but I still wish that I would have had the extra time to come up with something really special.

I'm out of LD39-related gifs, so here's a pic of my cat. 20170209_224036.jpg

In the unlikely event of me continuing development what would I do?

-Fix all issues of course.

-It's a good start, but it really is quite bare-bones and could use more mechanics. Maybe add levels and different arenas with more enemies. Power ups? There are honestly so many places this could go, I'm not even sure which way I would want to go with it.

-more polish. You can never have enough polish. The sound and feedback could always use a little touch up.

-Online high scores list. This is really just a pipe dream as I do not have a server and I also just don't know how to do it anyway. So if this ever ends up on kongregate or something, it probably will only have the dumb best (local) score/your score screen.

In the end, this was a very fun Ludum Dare and my first time doing the compo. I am very pleased with the end result and look forward to seeing the rankings Tuesday (if it doesn't get pushed back again). Thank you to everyone who played and/or ranked my game; I hope you enjoyed playing it as much as I enjoyed making it.

What's with all the negativity about the theme?

So your theme didn't get picked, neither did mine. There's no use crying over spilled milk. However, I think the one we got is awesome. Can't wait to brainstorm a good idea. Why is everyone so upset about it?

hurray, point-whoring time: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/zumaster snapshot.png I would be very grateful for ratings.

Play games with less than 20 ratings

Hi guys, as usual there is a huge divide of ratings on games. I have seen some games with over 200 ratings already and some with none at all. I'm not telling you to play these games instead. I am asking that you do just because the games with 50+ ratings don't need any more and who knows, you might just find a hidden gem. Itch doesn't let you browse for the least played, so it's up to us to counteract it.

here are a few:

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/wartermelon/

there are a sh*t-ton more, these I just found on itch from the LD41 tag randomly.

If your game has less than 20 ratings (i.e. there is a hazard symbol beside the ratings received and both are orange), feel free to post the link in the comments. If your game has more than that, especially if it has received more than 50 ratings, please don't.

as always, sorry to be such a shill, but my game can be found here (it also needs ratings): https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/zumaster

More games with zero ratings

Here are some more games in need of ratings. Again, I can't make you, but you should prioritize rating games with less than 20 ratings. as usual, they can all be found here (duh): https://ldjam.com/games/zero/all

My game is currently at 16 ratings, once it gets past 20, I won't include it in these lists (which I will do every day) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/zumaster
