LD 44

Finally starting!

I spent 3 hours last night thinking about my game and narrowing it down. Then I had to sleep (sleeping is going to be the biggest killer to progress :grimacing: ). Finally getting into it. Gonna use Unity since that's what i'm familiar with, and probably asesprite for assets. Not sure on music/SFX yet.

Good luck every one!

Things are getting real! (Title still WIP)

Been working since about 9am, and i've got a nice little room, a playable character, and an enemy (who doesn't have art hence the mysterious flames shooting from nowhere). This is fun!samplegame.gif

1/2 Core Mechanics down!

For "Your Life is Currency" one of the things I did was think "you could TRADE lives, sort of a barter effect". That's what I did, the way to upgrade in this game is to trade bodies with the enemy. (Better sprites down the road hopefully)samplegame.gif

Shameless Plug

Go ahead and try my game Slotbot Arena!

This is my first Ludum Dare and i'm happy with my results.

Notes on Game

  • You can only rapidly type space when you've already been drained of energy. So make sure to rack coins early on, because you can use those whenever you want! (If I could change one thing, it would be this mechanic)

  • I really wish I could've improved the enemy's movement logic. All they do is home in on you, which is just okay. I would've liked a more intelligent path finding mechanism so they don't all just converge on the same point after a while.

What I Used

  • Unity 2018.3.7f1
  • Asesprite for the art (i'm no artist so this was hard!)
  • Bfxr for sound effects
  • Open source content for typefaces and music

My Takeaways

  • I might need a group next time. Doing everything alone is so stressful!

  • Game jam's are a great opportunity to learn, and i'll be doing more that's for sure!

  • I hosted on itch.io, but I think if I want people to experience the game without the performance hit of a free hosting site i'll need to make it available for download.

Please enjoy, and leave feedback on my game!

Happy Ludum Dare 44!

20 days?

Are there really 20 days to play and rate games? This is my first jam, I didn't realize we'd have so long. I guess it makes sense considering the sheer number of games.

Also, I was wondering what the deal is with hosted content? I assume we're not supposed to update anything after the deadline, but how is that getting monitored? It doesn't really seem possible, for instance, to know if someone has updated their itch.io hosted content.

Ludum Dare 46

This is rough!

I did my first dare last year this time and everything came to me so easily. This time i'm struggling but i'm still looking forward to putting something out!

Finally got it how I want

I took longer than i'd have liked trying to decide on an aesthetic. I'm not artistic, but I really think this shaky-hand-drawn style is going to fit with what i'm aiming for.

Also have to say this is my 2nd ludum dare and the challenge is so much fun! It even gives me practice and learning opportunities for my own games.

Ludum Dare 46 over...rougher than last time.

This is my second Ludum Dare

Notes on Game

It's not completely done. I spent too much time thinking about a proper story and organizing the possible routes that I wound up shortening it up by 2 chapters (for a total of 3 short ones) and skipping an ending entirely. Once you hit Day 13 the game is over haha.

I encourage you to play through it a few times. You can click through the text for a faster experience (but you should read it the first time!). You click through by clicking in the same place where the "Continue >>>" button is.

What I Used

  • Unity 2019
  • Hand drawn art (can you tell?)
  • Open source content for typefaces and music

My Takeaways

  1. I might need a group next time. Doing everything alone is so stressful!

  2. Game jam’s are a great opportunity to learn, and i’ll be doing more that’s for sure!

  3. I definitely shouldn't have tried to make a game with multiple paths for a 3 day jam, especially since it's something I never did before. But as usual, I came away with more knowledge than before.

Please enjoy, and leave feedback on my game!

Happy Ludum Dare 46!

Thanks for your feedback

I'm not going to plug anything, I just want to show gratitude for the feedback i've received so far. It's be helpful and it's been re-assuring. I'm always hyper critical of my own work so when I realize it's not complete trash to other people, it feels good. It even entices me to put even MORE work into the game.

So thanks, and thanks to Ludum Dare for creating this avenue where we can express ourselves and feel good about any form of artistic expression

Thanks for the 20

Following suite with everyone else, i'd like to thank those that voted on my game. Last LD participated in was LD44 and I wasn't able to muster enough votes to rank, so getting it this time was nice. I look forward to playing many more games.

Ludum Dare 48

3rd LD

Excited to go at this again! I'm aiming to use either Unity AGAIN, or try something with plain JS Canvas. From past LD's i've learned I need to use freeware assets for the art, because I tend to spend too much time on the art and not enough time on the actual game design.

Can't wait!

I Think i'm happy with this idea

Settled on doing something about the "Deep State" lol. Pictured is a horrible programmer art version of a MAGA hat.

Better Luck at 49

Welp, after cycling through ideas since Friday at 9pm, working on sprites for hours, and honestly not feeling strongly about anything, i've decided to call it quits on LD48. I just didn't really like any of the ideas, and so I just started on one. But making sprites for something you don't feel strongly about, especially when you're no artist, is tough.

I think in October i'll get a buddy to do the jam with me so I can have company, have an artist, and just have some moral support.

There's still a full day, but I don't think I'll get anything done I can be happy with in 24 hours. Maybe inspiration will hit later, but for now i'm throwing in the towel :disappointed:
