Click of Ages

Ok well my game is submitted! yay!

Civ-click1.jpg

It needs a LOT of polish, I didn't quite get the all the gameplay in, and there's no win condition but I'm really happy with this project and hopefully I'll keep developing it.

Thanks everyone! That was fun!

I'm In and already doomed

My Brain: "This time let's do something simple. I know, there's a grid-based puzzle game that I've wanted to implement for ages that fits the theme perfectly! Let's do that."

Also my Brain: "Yes, good idea. And what if we wrapped the puzzle grid around any arbitrary quad mesh."

Sigh.

Strange Loop is Done I guess

Still need to write some docs and clean it up but it's done as it's gonna get for now.

forty eight

I'm in! I've been doing these since the almost-first one (LD1, but there was an LD0 I missed). Didn't join every one but did a bunch of them. Still haven't really finished a game yet. :) Got the schedule cleared and the fridge stocked so I am going to give this one a solid effort. Good luck everyone!

Getting Started

Ok I made some little room templates

Screen Shot 2021-04-23 at 9.40.04 PM.png

I can print these, draw on them and then scan it back in and color things in.

This is just a quick test, hopefully will be a little more polished than this:

Screen Shot 2021-04-23 at 10.47.57 PM.png

Drops right into LDTK which is pretty great.

Now I need to write a map loader for this. Hopefully I can finish that tonight.

My game idea is pretty half-formed right now but I think I like where it's going. The idea is that you are going deeper into your own dreams. You can go to sleep and then interact in the your dream world, and if you find a nice place to snooze in the dream world, well, you go even deeper into your dreams. What will you find there? Can you learn the language of dreams?

The story begins

I think I have enough in there now to start on the actual story. This is just fun placeholder text, but I've got the text drawing okay and highlighting the Dream Words.

Screen Shot 2021-04-24 at 11.55.27 PM.png

Also have a start on the Dream Journal. Your aim will be collecting words in the language of dreams. I don't have the mechanisms for this built yet but I have a start.

Going to get some rest and try to finish this up tomorrow.

A Bridge too far!

Bridges are fun! And extremely unstable too!

ezgif-2-4c72fd77c0e3.gif

I played a ton of the original bridgebuilder game back in the day. So i'm pretty excited about this one. Now i just need some better UI and then getting some brave little agents wandering around across the bridges.

I'm using luxe engine which has been really great. Hopefully i'll get some gameplay in tomorrow and have a bit of time to polish up the graphics and make it look nicer (i'm doing the jam for more time even though it's solo).

Follow me on twitter for more frequent updates (joeld42 )

Good luck everyone! Can't wait to play some unstable games!

Very Sleepy

Im too tired to post a proper update but i've got little blobs blobbing around in the game and it's pretty magical how much difference that makes.

In in for the Froots

I've been meaning to try out Pico-8 for some time, and this will be my first game jam using it. So far, I love it. The constrained environment is really helping me prevent overcomplicating things like I usually do.

harvest_2.gif

The idea is building a fruit/veg processing plant.

Try out an early build here: Froot Processor

Froot Processor finished

Yay, "Froot Processor", my LD52 game is done (ish).

harvest_9.gif

Check it out. This was my first attempt at using Pico-8 and I love it! kept me from making things too complicated (mostly).

Froot Processor Compo Page

This was also the first time I've stuck to the Compo in a while instead of switching to Jam or Extra (aka burnout)

Limited Space, Unlimited Scope

OK super excited for this one. Really need to do a jam. Gonna see how far I can get things.

Unfinished but Undaunted

LimitedemSpace-0.0.2/emOte1dN5d4r.png

Well, didn't manage to finish the game at all but I think this weekend really encapsulates what I love about game jams and Ludumdare in particular. Even though I don't have a playable game, when I look back on the last couple of days I really managed to accomplish a lot.

  • Built a standalone tool that can generate palettes from images, and save them as LUTs to use in game engines
  • Learned a lot about the Luxe render module and how to customize it.
  • Learned a bunch of new debug tools inside luxe.
  • Had fun modelling rocks and painting abstract garbage textures.
  • Figured out a pipeline to export GeoNodes instances from blender for procedural placement
  • Played around with an interesting art style which could be useful for real project.
  • Used gamepad controls for the game in luxe

That's like more than I usually get done in a week.

If you want to check out the game, you can find it here. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/54/$377338 You can fly around and admire the rocks, and hunt for secret debug keys.

Yay LDJAM time

Theme kind of took me by surprise because I've been thinking about a project that I've been calling "summoner cards" for a few weeks. Haven't actually started designing it or written anything down or anything but I've got a little pile of ideas in the back of my head. It's probably too ambitious for a game jam (especially with an unfamiliar engine) but it feels like the universe is telling me to give it a shot.

ld55emsummoning/emnLY1vr6eEd.png

Going to try to use Bevy this time. I've been slowly learning rust/bevy, have done some tinkering with it but nothing big yet. So far I've modified one of the hello world 3d sample to display cards (I'm using card images from my LD41 entry "Shufflefish" but these will be replaced).

Good luck everyone!

Making Progress

Alrighty, I've vastly simplified my idea but still think it will be neat. Should be crazy if I can get everything to work out.

ld55emsummoning/emlwcT5uGd0i.png

But for now I've got to start somewhere so I'm starting with placeholder cubes.

Switching to Jam

Ok well the game is nearly playable but not quite there, but it's turning out nice enough that I think I am going to switch to the jam and finish it tomorrow.

ld55emsummoning/emwPibBAZHtR.png

I promised myself I wouldn't but I think secretly I knew it was inevitable once the theme was announced.

CYBERSUMMONER now with AI Opponent

Actually tried playing against two AI (human is pink) and one of them tied me!

ld55emsummoning/emxScuVjWsOE.png

The AI is really more just choosing valid moves at random. Map is too wide open to really need much strategy tho, need to improve the mapgen a little.

Fun to watch it in action tho: https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@joeld42/112273228342006614

CYBERSUMMONER Unleashed!

In the year 2025 the AIs took over.

Humanity's only hope was to fuse technology with Dark Magic...

cybersummoner_screenshot.png

Are you ready to become a CYBERSUMMONER?

ld55_summoning.png

This is an turn-based, area control strategy game. You can play with other players locally, or AI or a mix. It's basically a clone of a game called "Battlesheep" right now, I had a bunch of ideas to make it more summony and make the scoring more complicated but I didn't have time to implement any of them. That's why there is a panel with "rat.exe" and some indicators, you can just ignore those. Perhaps there will be a post-compo version.

Scoring (for now) is simply the number of spaces you have. Try not to get stuck with any spaces that can't split, and try to block your opponents, 16 points is the maximum possible score right now.

You can set it to be all AI playing against each other, which is kind of fun to watch.

Check out the game at the project page: CYBERSUMMONER.

I'll see if I can make a web build this week but for now it's windows-only.

Music thanks to Arman Nobari (since this became a Jam entry).

Ludum Dare 56

Yeah Tiny Critters

Really looking forward to doing this LDJAM!

luxe_E3AfnTFcfm.png

Had a bit of a rocky start, mostly creative block sort of feeling even though I like the theme a lot and have a bunch of ideas, but I think I'm moving now. Don't know if it will turn out great but it should be fun, and I'm going to try something a little different and try to stick to 2D. Back to using Luxe engine for this one, which is nice since I've been away from it for a while and it's a breath of fresh air.

Don't let the algae blobs fool you, this is supposed to be a terrarium, and it should be mostly fish and snails and critters like that, the algae blob was just easy to draw so I started with that. Let's gooooo!

Best place to follow me for updates is on Mastodon at https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@joeld42, I'd love to see more LDJAM people posting on there, I miss the old days where twitter filled up with LDJAM posts.

Good luck everyone!
