LD 42

Let's Do This!! Musician / Coder LFG

Hey everyone! Texas-based musician/coder/designer here looking to collaborate for my first Ludum Dare! Seeking some artists or coders to help create something fun and unique this upcoming weekend. My music styles include 80's/90's synthwave, cinematic/orchestral music, and alternative rock, among others. Some of my alt-rock stuff can be heard at: http://www.jordantanner.net, but I'll likely focus on synth for this project. As far as my experience, my knowledge of Unity is probably around intermediate level and my audio production experience being more advanced. Art experience somewhat beginner but can probably contribute something in that realm. Possibly looking to create a 2D game, but am open to fun suggestions depending on the theme.

Tools: - Unity 2018 _ Ableton Live 9 Suite - Photoshop - Maya LT 2016

Hit me up on here if you'd like to talk about collaborating! If I can't find a team, I'll still enter solo, but it would be fun to jam with someone! Cheers! :)

Time to dream big and scope small!

Ludum Dare 42 hype!!

This will be my first LD and I'm super excited! Hope you guys are, too. I'll probably be making some kind of 2D platformer-esque game for my entry, since I'm familiar with that genre.

Any 2D character animators out there?? :)

Also, check out this excellent (and short) YouTube video I found on how to keep your project scope small and produce your minimum viable product early:

https://youtu.be/UvCri1tqIxQ

The possibility of not finishing our game in time is probably the biggest threat of all, so let's prepare as best we can! Good luck all!!

My Tools: * Unity * Photoshop CC * Ableton Live 9 / Propellerhead Reason * Maya LT * Graph paper * Super strong coffee

Anyone have any other last minute tips or encouraging words? Leave a comment here! Love you!! --Jordan

If you haven't tried my challenging combat platformer Poisoned Palace yet, please give it a try and a rating!

Two ways to play:

1) Rush to the top and beat the boss as fast as possible. The game will record and track your times!

#### 2) Survive as long as possible while the difficulty timer automatically increases enemy stats, poison rise rate, enemy spawning rate, and more!

If you manage to beat the boss, post your best times in the comments!

Thanks for playing and rating. I'll be sure to do the same for you guys! Good luck!

Player power and game difficulty MATH in my game explained!

GAME MATH and BALANCE!

For those interested, here's a quick rundown of what's happening math-wise in my game, "Poisoned Palace."

Game Difficulty

The game's difficulty is on a timer, and each level lasts 10% longer than the previous one. Level 1 only lasts about 20 seconds, Level 2 lasts about 22 seconds, Level 3 about 24 seconds, etc. With each level, lots of stats are increased, as illustrated in the infographic in this post, such as enemy health and damage, rate of poison rise, etc.

Poison-Rise-1 - 640.gif

Player Power

Starting at power level 1, the player must traverse the obstacles in the palace, avoiding the rising poison when possible and destroying enemies that are in their way. Finding and collecting powerups increases the player's stats as illustrated in the infographic in this post, such as Max HP, attack damage, and more. The idea is to rush the player to explore and power up in order to maintain a balance with the game's constantly rising difficulty (and poison).

Did I make my game too hard? Looking for feedback.

Regarding game balance...

PP_IntroFall.gif

Hey guys! Thanks to everyone that's played "Poisoned Palace" so far! I really appreciate all the ratings and feedback thus far. Several people have found the game too hard. If this is the case, this was certainly not on purpose! If you have time a minute, please play it (it's HTML5) and let me know how you feel about the difficulty! Was it too hard? If so, what made it hard? Whether it's because of too many enemies swarming around you or the platforming jumps too tough to make, I'd like to know about it! Thanks for the valuable feedback-- I'm proud of my game but want to make sure the user experience is balanced and enjoyable. It seems to be one of the hardest things to do in game dev, especially in a game with RPG elements like this one. This Ludum Dare has been my first, and it's been so much fun! Thanks to everyone in the community for being amazing. Cheers!

What a blast!!

Hey guys!

I hope everyone has had a fantastic LD42 and has learned some valuable lessons-- I know I have! Thanks to literally everybody that's played my game. I've really enjoyed experiencing everyone else's submissions and have seen a remarkable amount of uniqueness, talent, and innovation.

This has been my first game jam and I'm very thankful for the experience! I'm currently working on a Post-Jam version of "Poisoned Palace" and I can't wait to show it to you!

Thanks for making games and being part of this awesome community! Also, thanks to Mike @pov for running this thing, man!

Poisoned Palace results

Not a bad result for my first video game. I'm excited for next time. I learned a lot. Thanks to everyone that played my little game. I appreciate it!

RESULTS.png

As a musician by trade, maybe I'll focus more on music and audio next time. I'm happy to have scored reasonably well in the Mood category. That's definitely one that I was aiming for.

LD 44

What theme(s) are you hoping for?

I have some interesting ideas for "Parallel Worlds" and "Side Effects". Any themes you're crossing your fingers will make the final cut?

Set up and ready to go! So pumped! (Aaaaand I'm In!)

This is my 2nd LD and I'm aiming to hit the Compo submission time since I'm flying solo again. If I don't make it, I guess I'll submit to the jam instead.

I live in a tiny bungalow here in Austin, TX but I really like the little work space I've got set up. I might head out to the garage workshop and do some stuff out there this weekend, too.

LD44-Setup.png

Tools: - Unity 2019 / Visual Studio - Photoshop - Aseprite (if I go the pixel art route) and Pixel FX Designer for pixelated particle effects - Ableton Live for audio - Possibly Light2D for 2D sprite lighting if I can get it to work properly

Not sure if I'll go 2D or 3D yet. I made a 2D platformer for LD42 so I may try to go 3D this time to expand my repertoire. At any rate, good luck everybody and have fun!
