Can You Use Blender in Ludum Dare?

We’ll I just started in here and there are 100 days to start ludum dare 32. I know that you can use libraries like Haxe, OpenGL, Lwjgl, Slick2d, and stuff. You can also use Unity too. But can you use blender? I guess I’m ok with java itself, and I’m still trying to learn LWJGL, but CAN YOU USE BLENDER? I mean like, can you use it to make a game for ludum dare?

Thanks!

You may have a hard time getting people to play your game if they have to download Blender in order to run it. It’s been a while since I’ve looked at the Blender game engine, but I don’t believe it was capable of generating a standalone executable. However, I do believe it is possible to make very nice looking games using the Blender engine, such as Project Apricot by the Blender Foundation for instance.

Once Again, I’M IN

Well, here comes ludum dare 32. I’m In. As of course everyone is saying, I’M IN. I’m going to try my best, but this is of course my very first actual ludum dare, and I’ve only competed in a mini. Crash and burn is predicted

Tools:

Game Engine: Blender

Image Editor: Paint.net

Sound Editor: Audacity

However, I might change.

Surprisingly, I’m not using any python scripts for this game. Maybe one or two here are there, but non will be used.

UPDATE I: Started a Couple Hours Late, But Looks Good!

Well, I’m doing my first ludum dare. unforunetly, I thought and just screwed around for about 7 hours, lots of time wasted before I came up with a great idea:

LEGOES

Mechanics:

Enemies spawn an follow “nodes” to reach the candy bag, which they begin to damage. Once sustained enough damage, the game ends. Placing legoes and having adults step on them does damage. Daddozers (Payday Reference) have more health, and do more damage.

Premise:

You are a little kid, who has a secret candy stash. Unfortunately for you,  Your mom, dad, relatives, neighbors, and random people are coming to take it from you. Being a 6 year old, you go to the only weapon avaliable, LEGOES. Place them on the floor and have adults step on the, so they won’t take your candy! GO back to your lego bin to get more when you run out!

The perfect weapon.

Everything looks good so far:

About 3 Hours To GO

Well, My first Ludum Dare is about to wrap up! IN 3 HOURS!!!! I’m pretty suprised that I actually got 48 votes. For some it may seem small, but pretty much all the votes were positive. Plus this is my first time :3

Looking for something to rate with only 3 hours left? Take a Look!

I had an absolute BLAST with this. Will compete again.

I’m In :D

Well, this is my second Ludum Dare! Last time I’m using blender, but this time I learned Unity. So, I’m using that instead. Hopefully I can actually make a game, not screw up and lose hours ;D

Program: Unity

Image Editing: paint.net

3D Programmer: Blender

Sound: Audacity

Any Tips for Learning Unity?

I’m still not too good at Unity 5. I’ve been learning and can make simple games, but non can compete to other games in Ludum Dare. I’ve got books, “Unity in Action” being my best one, but are there any particular videos or books that would be of assistance? I’ve got 3-4 weeks, so I’m pretty sure theres time. Thanks in advance.

Good Chadivision! I would also like to add that the most important thing is to have fun during the Ludum Dare, not to “win against everyone else” – that’s only for the really good people! :) LD is also a really good learning opportunity in of itself! I feel like I come out of every Ludum Dare as slightly better game developer than what I was before!

As well as the Unity documentation, Youtube is an excellent source of learning when it comes to any subject.

I tend to learn best when I am watching videos and have subscribed to a number of tutorial channels over the years.

I prefer C# as a language over Javascript, having initially learnt Javascript for Unity and switching over when I found that C# seemed to be more commonly supported.

I Might Not Make It

Well, sad to say that I might not make my second Ludum Dare.  I am learning unity pretty well, but I’m not very sure I’m compatant enough to make a complete game. I will try at the very least, but I have to either quit, or turn my game in early. I am starting 7th grade, and I don’t want to miss a day. Turning Zombie on monday might not work to well. I will try, but I don’t know if I should turn in my half made game. I might. Good Luck to all you Jammers!

Go with the compo then! It ends at nine, and then if you do complete it you can show it to kids at school and seem super cool on the first day! BTW, I first learned Unity at that age too!

Yeah, I hit that one too in LD36 =)

Starting Over?

I might just scrap my LD as it is. Its heavily story based with no unique content to speak of and has no action. Scrapping? Saving that for later. Well, time to go again!
