1st Timer Going In!

This is going to be my first LD.

I will be using Slick2D together with Eclipse Java, Paint.net and Pickle for graphics, Fruity Loops for music and Audacity for sound effects. Due to other activities I will not be able to put my full time into this, but I should still be able to get something together!

Here’s to hoping I make something productive!

Progress, i has it!

Gasoline Quest teaser

“The game “Gasoline Quest” will blow you away! Its about jumping over cars with other cars and collecting gasoline! I’ve never played a better game in all my life!” /Not the programmer

After much work I am finally almost done with the coding!

Now i just need to work on the art :/

LD27

Here I come again!

Hey, last time didn’t go so bad, lets do it again!

This time around, I will use pure Java (no external libraries, it allows for more freedom in my opinion) with Eclipse IDE, Paint.net for graphics, Audacity and a mic for sound effects, FL Studio for music and large quantities of coffe! :)

Good luck, and have fun!

Eclipse, don’t leave me!

So the LD is in proximately 1 day at the time of writing.

I just finnished prepearing (learning all the neccesary methods and code magic I will need) and that’s when Eclipse decided to be a great idea; not being usable anymore.

I do not know why, but my Eclipse just isn’t working anymore, could have something to do with me deleting the old java version I had installed and updating to the newest one.
Either way, my trusty IDE to use with java just betrayed me, and now im left alone to face the terrors of LD 27 alone without any preperations.

So here’s to hoping I can get it up and running again (or atleast finding another good IDE) before the LD officialy starts.

P.S: If you have any suggestions on an alternate Java IDE, please leave a comment.
P.P.S: Yes, that was basicly the meaning of this entire post, and the first few rows about metaphorical betrayl was completly unnecesary 😛

Some alternative IDE’s i would suggest are Intellij IDEA, and Netbeans

I don’t know how hoof it is, but before i were allowed to use Eclipse at school they forced me to use BlueJ. It should work in a pinch, but hopefully someone more experienced got better suggestions.

Out of curiosity, did you accidentally delete the JDK files from the old version and only installed the latest JRE files without the JDK files?

Sleep is for the ones who wants to be really grumpy when they wake up to start the ludum dare

For those who remember my post about Eclipse IDE failing me, after much fiddling around I got another version of it to work (Thanks to everyone who commented with suggestions and alternate IDE’s)
Now it’s time for me to get some sleep so I can wake up all grumpy when the LD starts (because why not? : P).
Good Luck And Have Fun!

A (not so good) update post

Woke up an hour ago and started working (a bit frustrated at the theme, but i got some ideas), but it seems my programming skills do not want to work right now.
What ive done so far:

Nothing.

Everything i have done has gotten some critical error and turned out wrong, at the moment i am sitting on a big pile of nothingness.

Hope everything is going well for everyone else!

It’s okay, Buddy. I got nothing done so far as well. You just gotta believe!

Time for snacks and a movie : )

So, first day is done for me, let me walk you through the base of my game!

LD 27032

Here we can see the player (art is wip : P), the player must reach the end of the screen to the right to win. Unfourtunately he cannot jump high enough, so instead he moves boxes using the mouse!

LD 27065

However his magic powers are a bit… shit. He can only lift a box for a total of 10 seconds, if his power runs out; he is stuck forever and you lose the game : (.

When you reach the end of a level, the next one loads instantly!

LD 27206

There is going to be a total of 10+ levels (have not decided yet), all of which being jumping/time puzzles!

Well, that’s all i got for now, hope everyone else aren’t having any problems!

A story, my kingdom for a story!

So, my game is pretty much done, and i just realized that my game is not challenging. In any way.
That’s when i got this idea for a short story (i won’t spoil anything), so i started making narrations for each room, progresively telling a short story.

With the addition of the “story”, i am a bit more satisfied with my game, can’t wait to hear all of your opinions on it!

Sharks arrr awesome

A bit late, but Im joining the Shark mini ld, let’s make wonderfully gritty and disturbing games with sharks! 😀

Shark Em Up has progress!

So, day 1 is over, but before i go to bed i will walk you through my game so far!

It’s a beat em up side scroller where you first customize your shark (which affects different things; speed, damage, defense), and then beat the shit out of other stuff, so far i have the generation screen mostly done, and basic artwork done. Tomorrow i will make the actual fighting! Hope everyone else is having a great time, see you tomorrow!

Sharkjam failure

So due to the irl interruptions of moving house, i was not able to finnish the sharkjam (Oh no! :C ) however i have decidet to finnish the game whatsoever, if you did not see my update, it will be a mortal kombat-ish side scrolling fighter with sharks. I did to much work on it to not finnish it, so stay tuned for “Shark em up: Deadliest Catch”, coming soon to a ld post near you!

That’s the spirit, keep on going!

LD28

IT’S ON!

This is going to be my third Ludum Dare, and im really looking forward to it. I have evolved so much since my fist Ludum Dare, and i am eager to show myself and everyone else just that! So let’s make this Ludum Dare the best one ever!

Here comes the traditional tools list:

Programming Language: Java
IDE: Eclipse
Audio: Audacity/Soundbible/sound effect generator that is linked somewhere on ludum dare
Music: FL Studio
Extra Libraries: LibGdx

So there you have it, now stop reading this and go make games!

A big warmup game?

So the Ludum Dare time is getting ever closer, and it’s about time i think of a warmup (we don’t want to repeat last years startup, do we? http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/2013/08/23/a-not-so-good-update-post/ ). But instead of making a short simple game, why not use this time to work harder on a project i have been doing for a while, and build a more limited version of it? It will be a bit bigger than usual warmup games are, and i might not even finish it in time, but let’s give it a shot. If it fails, at least it will be good for lols :D.

Rougelike?

So i woke up a couple of hours ago, and i am now currently freezing in a cellar trying to keep my fingers warm enought to type :/

When i first saw the theme “You only get one” i thought “Weeeeell shit”. I had no idea what to do, but since i have been trying to do rougelike stuff during the last week(s) i decided to try and do a rougelike-ish game.

Still not sure how to implement the theme in it, but at least some basic level generation is done!

Here, have a gif!

Here, have a gif!

Dropping out

This theme… It has left me so uninspired that i still have barely anything to show for after one long day. I am going to be true to myself and just admit i will not finnish anything, so i will be stopping here. Hope everyone else has a great time!

Let’s play your games!

So I kinda failed this LD, as in: I gave up. But let’s not be sad about that, it’s Christmas! So instead, I think im gonna play all of your games and record it! Leave a comment to this post with the name of your game and a link to it, and I will make sure to play it and upload a video of it to my channel: http://www.youtube.com/mrdutyfull

Merry Christmas (or happy holidays, depending on your belief) and I will see you in my next video!

/Sincerly: “Koltiman”/”Kladdax”

Let’s do this!

Allright, im ready and motivated. Let’s go make games!

However, this time is going to be different. Want to know why? No? Well to bad, im telling you anyway! >:D

During all the past Ludum Dare’s I have been programming in Java (with and without extended libraries).
This time however, I will be using Unity. The reason for this is that I will be doing a practice work at a local games company which mainly/only uses Unity. I have been playing around with it earlier, but never gotten around to doing a real project in it. Seeing as Ludum Dare forces you to learn fast or go home, this is a perfect oppurtuniy for me to delve into the “modern” games developing that is Unity.

For all of you who are still reading (thanks by the way), this is the rest of the traditional tools list:

Sound: Audacity (just gonna record myself doing different sounds and tweak it).
Music: FL Studio 11.
Graphics: Paint dot net.
Beverage of choice: Coffe.
Eyecolor: Blue.
Meaningless filler text: Check.
Doge: very.
Stop typing text: Yes.

If I will be able to dedicate at least half of saturday and all of sunday to the mini-LD I will actually be doing the exact same thing.

Progress, it is being made!

So im a few hours into the ld, and i have allready made quite a bit of progress. I have decided on what the game should be and how it plays out. Here, let me show you!gif

(Click the gif to watch it)

You (the player) control a revolver in the wild (apparently very green and lush) west. Your aim (pun not intended) is to take down the bad bandit guys hiding in their strongholds. You do this by positioning yourself, aiming, and then shooting away! There is not much more to it than what you can see here, but i feel as if i might actually make something worthwhile this time around! 😀

Hope everyone else is doing great!

LD29

I’m (sort of) in

So it looks like it’s time for another ludum dare, hope everyone has their tools and equipment set up ( I know I don’t 😛 ). This is my fourth ( third, if you only count times when I submitted something ) ludum dare and I’m really loking forward to it. This time however, I will be doing something different, instead of joining the compo – like I usually do – I will be doing the jam. This is because of several reasons, but the biggest one being I will be a bit busy with real life stuff this weekend and also that no matter what the theme is I will try to make the game work in some way with an awesome collection worms/cortex command pixel/terrain destruction unity scripts I found. Seeing as these were made before the ld I will have to join the jam in order to be following the rules ( which you should do. If you don’t you are a bad person and should be ashamed of yourself ). But that’s quite enough introduction, let’s get on with the tools list!

– Engine/Language: Unity3D ( in 2d, scripting using c#)

– Art: Paint.net

– Music: Fruity Loops ( if I get the time. If i don’t I will look online or use autotracker https://github.com/wibblymat/ld24/blob/master/autotracker.py it’s a python script which creates a loop friendly little chiptune styled song )

– Sound effects: My super awesome acting skills and things I find at home which I smash together whilst recording

– Stuff used to stay awake: coffe and willpower…?
