Getting ready for LD #30

Hi,

Since I plan to join LD #30 next weekend, I thought it might be appropriate to do a brief introduction of myself. My name is Marc and I’m a programmer, but sadly not in the game industry. However, I do some game development in my spare time. Due to a constant lack of  said spare time, I never actually finished any of my projects. I hope LD will teach me how to make the most of limited time. But mostly I hope it will be loads of fun. I don’t see LD as a competition anyway. To me it’s something that brings people together from all over the world.

I’m still  not sure, if I’ll join the solo competition or the jam with a friend. We’ll probably use HTML5 + JavaScript for coding and Gimp/IrfanView for graphics. Sound FX and especially Music could become a problem.

I did some graphics for warmup weekend. It’s a tile set for a jump&run game in retro pixel art style:

tiles01 example01

The example level is just a mockup, because I didn’t have the time to actually code something. The tile’s color palette uses colors of a C64 btw. 16 colors should be enough for everyone, although I had to add a 17th color as transparent color. I never noticed before how carefully those colors were chosen by the designers of the C64 to complement each other. And I still don’t use all of them yet.

So, be creative everyone!

Marc

LD32

Well, still not sure if I’m in…

… but if I am, I’ll try to do something in Java. Probably use Gimp and Paint.Net for graphics and Audacity for sound (if any, not good at sound).

Since this is my first LD, I’ll just see if I come up with a good idea for the chosen theme. From that point it’s just experimenting. I’ll probably join LD72/jam although I am working alone, but it feels less stressful for the first time.

Trust me, you’re going to get a lot more done if you fully commit now.
