Idea, get lost, start over — iteration Process

Greetings Traveller,

We started early this morning with some rough sketches on the blackboard.

blackboard

“Survive Enemies and dangerous cliffs,  pick up PoweUps and survive as long as possible with only 10 seconds starting time!”

Everything was fine until we tried to actually start making the game with some “new tools”. Always remember: Know your Tools! Now we are working with SFML 2.1 and Visual studio 10. Sound will be done in Cubase and Grapics in aseprite.

Greeting this far!

Going to sleep

Since it is short after midnight in Germany, we decid to stop working for now and continue tomorrow morning.

Though we had a rough start, we are good into getting some progress now and I am quite happy with what we achieved. Still lots of things and small issues have to be done tomorrow, but for you we have a hot-baked-good-night screenshot!

This LD is a great time and i am thoroughly enjoying it! Good luck to everyone else, please keep on with all that amazing work!

To show yoy what you will get:

You are welcome to play, rate and comment! Thanks for your time.

Is this a proprietary tile engine? Perhaps written in OpenGL? I just thought I’d mention that I see vertical tears in your tilemap, which may be caused by failure to clamp texture coordinates (manually, in the shader) within a spritesheet. I’ve recently had this same problem and it bothered me so I just thought you might like to know.

Stahlholz Post Mortem

Hi there,
so this was it, our first ludum dare. Some things went pretty well, others failed completely. Nevertheless it was such great fun and crossing the finishline is just such a great feeling, we instantly decided to take part next LD for sure!

Bad Stuff

  • We started with Gibbo2d, but shortly realized it was definitely not the tool we needed. None of us really did a Game with Gibbo. It is an ambitious Project, but since its very new, not much Community is present and I missed some key features (or probably more their documentation). After 6 hours we changed to c++ with sfml.
  • We totally fucked colission detection (or more likely colission treatment). Things are now fixed (actually this is not too hard if you know what you are doing but in the short time we were unable to figure out the small piece which made it work.
  • Since I was in a hurry changing from Gibbo to c++ (omg omg so much time wasted) i craked the Project Setup with some really strange Setting. Release was not compiling (running in debug mode seems fine while programming) in time for the deadline, so our only chance was to submit the Debug-Version. Hours later we realized you need some damn microsoft dlls to run debug.
  • A more sophisticated name for our Game would have been appleasing, but since our entry is some sort of dilettante the name is actually just fine :)

Good Stuff

  • c++ and sfml work really great! I did some Projects with this Tools and my Team member got into it in about 10 seconds. “how do I draw” – ” yeah just call the windo.draw” “o_O”. Nice to see things work out
  • Doing Music was pretty fun. I run a semi-professional Recording-Studio so I just created a Bass-Line and some syths. SoundFX were done with sfrx which is an amazing tool. I didn’t do any 8Bit or retro style so for next time I will definitely have some Drum-, FX- or general Sound-Samples ready.
  • We used a global class for setting all the relevant “magic game numbers”, like gravity, PowerUp-Timers,  Tile Size and so on. Since we are both programmers, this worked out great, because we had one point for changing Parameters. I will definitely keep this up for future projects.
  • Idea and Game Concept Creation. I just love my blackboard. Drwaing the concept in the easiest way was just the best thing we could do. And having the sketch still next to me still makes me smile over and over again.

So this was our first LD. Thanks for the opportunity and keep on!

LD28

I am in!

Hi there,

This time is my second LD and I am looking forward to it.

The tools of the trade are C#, Visual Studio 2012, SFML.Net 2.1, aseprite and Cubase. I am planning for a retro/pixel style 2D game.

The warmup weekend was spent with some friends from a local regulars’ table on game dev. Some great long term projects here. :) My team mate and I prepared our solutions and folders, so we are ready to start right away next weekend.

Since I am not quite happy with the timelapse programs available, I wrote my own using C#. Its special function is that the snapshot interval depends on the currently active window.  Since it is not neccessary to take pictures writing the code every 5 seconds it is great to have some higher resolution on doing sound or even graphics.

If anyone is interested I would be happy to share the program.

So I hope everyone has a great time next weekend!

LD 38

We are in

We are going to join LD38. Tools used: HaxeFlixel and FlashDevelop, Aseprite for graphics, Cubase for sound. Have a nice Ld everyone!

Progress Day 1

Hi there,

We are creating a 2d topdown survival Game. For us in Germany the second day has just started. Yesterday we handled world generation and the first part of the crafting system, as well as Playermovement and controls. Today we will take care about the survival aspect and balancing. As we are aiming for th 72 hours, day three will be polish and sound.

Have fun and keep stamina!

LD 41

We are in

Hi there,

So for this LD, two 1hgj Veterans are teaming up. It is DevilLime and Laguna. We are supported by ValenciaOrange who will do awesome pixelart graphics.

We are going to use C# and SFML.NET with a premade JamTemplate. Other tools will be reaper (for music), Aseprite (for pixelart) and google drive / discord for communication.

glhf to all participants!
