I Would Like To Participate In Your Ludum Dares

I have an addiction to internet competitions.  Not finishing them, mind you, just entering them.  Though there was that one time I finished second or third in an art competition.  Small beans compared to Ludum Dare.

So I’m here to feed the addiction and possibly learn something about game design in the process.  My social calendar is free and clear this weekend and the wife is humoring my intentions, bless her.  The timing of a Utah Indie Developer group a couple days before the competition kicks off seems fortuitous to me.

Tech Declarations

The only thing left to pick up for the competition is the fortitude to see it through to completion, to have a playable game by the end of the 48 hours.

I’m in.

Just Over An Hour To Go

I decided I should post my workspace like all you romans are.

My Home For The Next 48 Hours

Not that I think it’s a huge deal but I figured I should update my declarations:

  • Wacom Intuos 3 for hand-drawn goodness in PS CS3
  • Music: Changing from Wolfram (folks in IRC suggested issues with rights) and moving to MusicShake

Learning To Program Mid-Ludum-Dare

Is finding out you didn’t know quite as much as you thought you did about programming mid-LD a good thing or a bad thing?  I suppose it’s bad for finishing-a-game-in-48-hours sake but good for strong-motivation-to-learn sake.  C#, why must you handle arrays in a completely different fashion from javascript?

It’s now 3am here in Utah.  Time to go to bed and tackle this with a fresh mind tomorrow.

Learning is never a bad thing. Ludum Dare isn’t going anywhere so even if you don’t manage to finish this time around, there’s always next time. :)

In C#, an array is almost never what you want to use. List is where it’s at; with List you can insert new elements or remove elements easily. And if there’s any library code that demands an array for whatever reason, you can always call ToArray on your list to get back an array.

Time To Tackle Some Arrays

After breakfast of course.

You’ve Beaten Me C#, Javascript It Is

A 48 hour compo is not the best time to learn all the vagaries of an expansive language.  Maybe I’ll be up for C# next LD.  Let’s give javascript a try instead!

I’m using JavaScript (well CoffeeScript, but same shit – different smell).

The fact that you can access variables directly (I know I know, programming no no) and that not everything has to inherit from a class makes things a little easier.

plain javascript here – without coffee, without any other frameworks. Goes quite well. Good luck with your game.

Thanks, Fenmar! Good luck with yours as well.

Finally, Some Concepts

I knew I was going to have to go simple with my lack of coding experience, but with hangups using C# and switching to javascript mid-compo I’m going even simpler than that.  Trying not to let that dishearten me and forge ahead and get something complete before the finish line.  Here’s some doodling to get the game laid out.
