Ludum Dare 57

First Ludum Dare AND GameJam :)

Howdy all, this is my first ever proper game jam. Wasn't having big creative blocks with the theme of 'Depths' but I'm prototyping a 2D/3D game where the player, enemies and structures are in 2D within a 3D world (the idea being they lack depth). here's where I'm currently at:

froggeemfortress/emblog_1.png

Have been out all day so currently only have some simple movement and the art that I'm re-using from a project that I dropped a while ago but I've got a decent idea of what I want to do and how to do it. And as an added bonus the art I have means I can't scope creep cause it's all I've got haha.

Anyways happy to be here, will see how we go

Progress Update

Just a progress update since my first post. Not a lot of visual changes but the game framework is coming together. Can now spawn towers and have enemies chase you. froggeemfortress/emblog_2.png

Next will be getting the enemies, player and towers able to attack.

Day 2: Progress Update

After going to bed at 3am last night went for a nice beach walk this morning and then back to the grind with a strong 5hrs of sleep :muscle:

Here's a quick progress update. Added some temp UI for tower costs and resources and have been playing around with confining the game to 4:3 cause I really like that screen ratio for some reason.

Progress Update 3

Spent way too long on getting some basic UI and tweening in today (not my specialty) as well as getting enemies attacking. froggeemfortress/emblog_4.png

Not sure if the UI top/bottom bars are too chunky but kind of like how it frames the games.

Tomorrow will be adding the rest of the core loop and then figuring out something for the player to do while their towers are killing things

Update of Progress No.4

Working on the title screen first up today, usually hate working on UI but I think it's got a lot of charm what do y'all think? froggyemtowers/emblogem4/em2b.gif

Frogge selector anyone? Is it too busy with the lil guys in the background? froggyemtowers/emblog_5.gif I swear I'll work on gameplay at some point :sob:

Progress Update - The Final Chapter Part 1

I now understand the primal fear of trying to upload a game with < 3mins left on the clock, who knew we got an extra hour to finalise submissions huh

This has been my first Ludum Dare and first proper game jam, it's been an awesome and exhausting (my own fault) experience and has reminded me what I enjoy about making games. I streamed the whole process to my friends on Discord over the last [inserthowevermany_days] and it felt good having them ask questions and make suggestions as I was going.

The community has been wonderful and it's great seeing all the cool games people have worked on, so with that I'll continue playing through all the games and then take a much needed 'nap', happy jamming all :raised_hands:

Froggy Towers: Post-Ludum Update

Heya folks,

Not sure if it's normal or not to share updates after the game jam but wanted to let people know the progress I've made and hopefully I'll be able to make something more inline with what I originally had in mind. The embedded HTML version of the game on my Ludum Dare profile is still the original submission, all reviews from this point on should use that version, however I'll be continuing to update the itch.io version for a little while at least.

I hope this isn't in poor taste, just wanted people to play something closer to what I originally intended. https://lordsheo.itch.io/froggy-towers

ps. it's not done yet, still plenty of bugs and features need to be ironed out.

What's Next - Change level ups, these should grant character stat increases instead of towers. - Towers can be bought at the end of a wave from the shop and placed by the player. - More juice to the animations of the critters and towers. - LOTS of balancing for towers, enemies and characters

Let me know what else you'd like to see! I don't think I'll take the game any further than just cleaning it up but like I said in the game submission it's something I've wanted to make for a long while so it will be good to at least lay it to rest.

Froggy Towers: Post-Ludum Update 2

Howdy all, been hard at work adding some more ~~jank~~ features to the game.

Have added some simple tooltips to the characters and towers: froggyemtowers/emblog_7.png

And a big new win is the shop :raisedhands: currently just going with stat increases for gold but might add buying towers as well not sure. froggy/emtowersemblog/em7b.png

Not gonna lie though it's kind of hard working on a jam game post jam because of the amount of jank and tech debt that was concentrated into that 3 day period. Have had to hold myself back a few times from re-writing a bunch of code, other times it was necessary for me to fix things up.

All-in-all it's been a good learning experience of how much can be done if you don't get stuck on the small details and just hack something together, so looking forward to continuing with the project for a little bit longer to finish it off!

p.s remember to play the embedded HTML version on the Ludum Dare site if you want to review it, thanks!

Froggy Towers: Post-Ludum Update 3

Alright I've updated the version on itch.io and I'm honestly pretty happy with the game at this point, it's not everything I wanted it to be but I think it's actually fun now (initial launch was pretty rough I know ).

I know it doesn't really count for Ludum Dare anymore but for those of you who are interested or played the initial submission version it'd be great if you checked out the newest version on itch.

Thanks all and happy easter :egg:

Ludum Dare 58

End of first day, feeling pretty good

Evening all (but actually it's nearly midnight for me), hope everyone's day one is going well!

Been working hard over the day trying to get the core gameplay loop in while @sharky3188 worked on all the art (absolute legend). Here's some sneak peaks for our Dune inspired resource collection game (collection mechanics pending ). drone/emdrama.png harvester_2.png

Day 3 already???

Time flies when you're having fun, can't believe we're already on the last day of the jam. Honestly feeling pretty good about where the game is at the moment, gonna spend today doing UI and polish see y'all at the end!

I'm happy to announce that we can now collect things in our game!

Title says it all, this has been a pretty ambitious project so far but we can finally collect things in the game. Some may say collecting things is the entire point of the jam but I think the Collectors were the turrets we made along the way.

Happy final day everyone and good luck! :tada: collection_ui.png
