SpaceOut Screenshot

Just wanted to share a quick screenshot of our game, which is kind of a mix of breakout and space invader type of games.

Will share more with you all later! (still exhausted from the jam!)

Space Out | Eject All Powerup

space-out-eject-all.gif

Hitting the EJECT power up brick releases all space men on the screen from their space pods, allowing you to pick up several quickly if used strategically!

...I accidentally double posted so changed this one to a quick screenshot

SpaceOut Core Mechanic 1: Rescue Space Men

Core Mechanic 1: RESCUE SPACE MEN

space-out-space-man-collect-2.gif

We received some feedback that our game SpaceOut is too easy because you can simply stay in the same path and shoot sporadically. These people have missed the point of the game: To Rescue the Space Men

To open the space pods you must Shoot the pods with your laser 5 times.

Your Ball Busters will not open the pods. They have no effect on them.

Also note that if you don't collect the space men quickly enough...

Core Mechanic 2: Return in a Portal Brick

Some players I'm sure skip the instructions and we kind of ran out of time on making one of our core mechanics really intuitive. Since we can't make changes for 20 days I figured the least I can do is write a quick post in case anyone does look for an explanation.

brick-portal-320.gif

What is a portal brick? A portal returns your ship back to the hangar and opens up the upgrade/select ship menu again.

Returning to the hangar allows your ship to unload all the space men you pick up which gives you points and money. Your ship has a limited capacity of spacemen it can carry so you have to return to the hangar via a portal frequently.

With that money you collect you can upgrade your ships by clicking the green arrows next to their stats.

So if you don't figure out the concept of the portal then you are missing out on a lot of the game!

space-out-portal-5.gif

How do I open a portal? If you run into the portal brick your ship crashes and explodes. It has to be opened first.

To open a portal you have to bounce your balls off it three times. This can be the same ball deflected back at it or three different balls.

Lasers have no effect on portals.

After three bounces the portal open animation starts. The portal isn't "open" until that animation finishes (I did that on purpose...probably a bit too harsh, hehe)

Compo Submitted

Submitted my entry. Definitely didn't get everything I wanted done but happy nonetheless. My first Compo entry, and first time I've made music for my own game, and I quite like the vibe, even if there isn't any depth to the gameplay. I focused more on elements like UI and polish.

FISH Motel: FISH-MOTEL-SIGN-overwaterx8.PNG

Silly story. Built the motel on fishless pond. Have to keep the fish alive while crossing to get to the motel.

Results & iOS App!

Two bits of good news in 24 hours!

  • Results are in!
  • iOS App approved! (for this game)

I have not submitted an app to the App Store before, so this is just a personal goal/landmark. This isn't an amazing game or anything - I just wanted to go through the process and get something up there to learn from the experience. Plus, it feels pretty cool!

...though, I expect to get killed in the reviews on the App Store  lol

Here is a link to that: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fish-motel/id1511033023?ls=1

Here is a QR code to scan (just open your camera) if you are reading this on a computer: fish-motel-qr.png

Note: I'm planning on testing out uploading to Google Play store this weekend, or soon. Just wanted to do one at a time since it is all new to me

Other news, I am very happy with the results!

ludum-dare-results.png

Holy Moly! 6th place?!

I mean, it isn't completely out of the blue since people's comments were great, but I definitely did not expect to get that high!

The other scores were good too, or at least I mean I'm happy with them! I'm a bit surprised that music/audio is that high since it is my first time making music, but I kept it simple.

Anyway, thank you all that have played, voted and commented!

Also, when reading everyone's comments, including on other games as I like to read other comments before I post mine, I noticed overwhelming positivity. I don't just mean there were no jerks - but people were either outright positive or when giving feedback it was actually 1) helpful and 2) sincere, and 3) a lot of times sandwiched between compliments. It is just great to see that kind of community!

Busy Bar: Day 1 Progress

Making a game I'm calling Busy Bar, where there is limited space behind the bar. Therefore, it is basically a jigsaw puzzle mechanic to move workers around.

Worked on creating a prototype today and setting up the basic logic.

Feels tedious to play at this point, but think I can work on that as I go. Haven't started any art yet, so visually looks horrible. Still, I'm happy with the progress so far.

I decided to export the prototype as-is and upload to a blog post on my website. It definitely isn't that playable state that you typically wait to share anything, but I thought it might be interesting to document the progress.

You can test it out here: https://www.loubagel.com/blog/ludum-dare-54-day-1

I realized that if anyone actually wants to check it out, I had to write a lot to explain everything. Since there was no art done, nothing is intuitive. As in, you can't see where the beer taps are to fill up a beer. Scroll down the page a ways past the text if you want to see the project first.

Looking forward to Day 2! Need to rest up though. Good luck to everyone!

Busy Bar: Day 2

Today I focused primarily on art

Capture.PNG

Definitely won't be able to get to everything I wanted. Will have to see how much energy I have tomorrow. I am strongly considering just entering the Jam instead of the Compo.

Again, I exported the current project as-is to document the progress: https://www.loubagel.com/blog/ludum-dare-54-day-2/

Here was yesterday's, if you want to compare: https://www.loubagel.com/blog/ludum-dare-54-day-1/

Submitted Busy Bar

Hopefully? I'm paranoid I forgot to click something or add all the info or source files or something - let me know if I missed something, but for now, I need some food and a nap!

Game Page: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/54/$377433

Later I'll have to grab some more screenshots, gifs, and/or video. And also check out other people's games!

Noticed my typo 3 days later lol

I make typos all the time - normally I wouldn't care that much.

But this is literally the only explanation/introduction for my game - the only way you interact is by clicking a tile:

movement-tutorial.png

It is supposed to say: "Click a tile next to the vacant tile"

VACANT - not adjacent lol

Now I'm shocked that I haven't had any comments on it - guess everyone still figured it out just fine???

Too funny! Next time I won't wait until the last hour to make the tutorial, ha.

Game Jam Dev Log

I made a little blog entry each day during the jam.

I probably could have just posted them here each day, just realizing that, but I think it is also nice to see the final product and then go back (if interested) to see how it progressed.

So here are the three posts: - Day 1 Progress - Day 2 Progress - Day 3 Progress

Compo Entry, so only three days.

Made a lil teaser (not trailer, ha) for my game:
