I’m in (first timer)

I’m in for the fun of it. I’m usually a web developer, but I’m trying my hand at games. I’ve written small games in Java, but I bought GM two weeks ago and I’ve been getting in a lot of practice with it. I like that it let’s me focus my efforts on the things I’m lacking: sprite making and audio. So, for the next one I may use Java, but for my first time, I’ll be using:

IDE/Language: Game Maker Studio Pro/GML no DnD
Graphics: Gimp and GM Sprite Editor
SFX: BFXR, Audacity
Music: Muse Score

Ready to bake some potatoes!

This is my First Ludum Dare competition, and I’ll be streaming most of it. My weapons of choice will be Game Maker Studio Pro/HTML5 module, the Gimp, Audacity(maybe), and Muse Score. Good luck, everyone!

Progress Report

I picked a rough LD for my first. The theme “minimalism” is very difficult because every idea I could come up with was sure to be very unoriginal. So, I decided to not fight it. I aimed for something simple because it’s my first time. I went simple with the tools and I went simple with the idea. I’m creating an Asteroids/Lunar Lander mix with potatoes and french fries as the bad guys. I’m working on a few kinks, but it’s pretty much complete. You can play what I have so far HERE. I call it Potatoroids. Sounds terrible I know.

Done – I give you Potatoroids!

I submitted this with around 6 hours left in the competition. It’s not bad for my first, after only using the main tool for around 3 weeks. This has been fun and a great learning experience. I’d like to give a pre-thanks to everyone who votes on my little game. Good luck to everyone!

Here’s the entry.

Here’s the Gamemaker source for anyone interested.

I’m in again!

Second time here. On my first attempt, I took it easy and went with Game Maker. This go around I’m going to use Java, and I’m hoping to do something multiplayer using Kryonet. We’ll see about that based on the theme.

Other tools:

  • The Gimp
  • FL Studio or Musescore for music
  • Eclipse
  • Caffeine (Tea Earl Grey Hot)

Changed My Mind

I was going to do something multi-player using java and kryonet. I had planned on using lwjgl and slick2d. However, since the theme is “10 seconds”, I’m going to save my multi-player fun for a later project and delve into a platformer idea that should be interesting. I’ve noticed that web games get the most ratings (whether they are good or bad) and I want to make my game as accessible as possible, so a web version is necessary. I was going to try using an applet in java. I also thought about just going back to game maker as it makes it easy to convert to make an HTML5 version, even though there are usually some bugs that you have to work through to make it work correctly. For instance, the path functions on GM seem to not work at all in HTML5.

So, I’m going with a library I’ve never used before in Java, libgdx. Hopefully I can learn it as I go and make something that at least functions. Wish me luck!

I’m in!

Well I’m in for another Ludum Dare, after skipping the last one. I’ll be using Java + libgdx, pickel/gimp, FL Studio, and one of the sound fx generators where necessary. Hopefully, I’ll be able to turn out something this go around. I must remember to stock up on caffeine as well.
