First Timer!

Hello everyone!

My name is Hunter

On the Internet I go by Mactinite, or TheMackNT, or under the guise of BearMac Studios!

So I attempted to participate in the 7DFPS, butI am always busy during the week so this failed. This coming weekend I only have work on Friday and some school on Saturday So if I sit down and do it I should be able to make a game (maybe? hopefully?). Well anyways here’s what I’ll be using :

Engine : Unity3D <3

3D Modelling : Blender

Image editing: Photoshop / GIMP

Sound & Music: Other than audacity and my voice I have no idea.  XD

P.S. I’ve never done this before so if any of these programs violate the rules let me know please. I’m more than flexible. :)

P.S.S If anyone could recommend a program for sound it would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome! This will be my first time as well. For sound effects, you can check out sfxr or bfxr. As far as music, I think there are a lot of options. For Mac (just guessing that’s what you have haha), you can look into Logic and for PC, FL Studio or Cubase among many others. Leave options open as i’m sure others will have better ideas, just something to look into.

However, I found a java port of the program that works excellently! I love it!

Game idea!

So my idea for my game involves a theme that didn’t win; Strange power ups, however I won’t spoil the strangeness (muahaha). So My game has some sort of enemy that moves towards you constantly. You have top avoid them and for every 10 seconds you do so you get some points! The strange power ups will help in doing so and will each last 10 seconds (or less :o) I think this is a nice idea and a good scope. :)

Let me know what you think.

P.S.  I’m live streaming here : http://www.twitch.tv/bearmacstudios

Go check it out 😉

Okay, Okay. New Idea.

So I was talking to my friend and the subject of Vampires came up. This gave us an awesome idea for my game basically you’re a vampire out hunting at night, your blood levels are dropping, and you need blood. So you sneak around and suck some Human blood. But here’s the catch: there are patrols with flashlights and if they catch you they’ll kill you on site they’re alerted to your presence and location every 10 seconds. I think it’s pretty awesome so I’m rolling with it.  Here’s a screenie:

If you’re not busy or just watching the compo or jam come watch me make this thing at http://www.twitch.tv/bearmacstudios

Progress!

I’ve got the patrolling enemy and a human and the human dies and the enemy can see you!

Here’s a gif!

Moving right along

This is really starting to move along. I’ve got some art for the different entities : Player, Patrol, and Human.

game

What you see here in this gif (you might have to click on it to watch it) is the player(vampire) going over to a human, sucking it’s blood dry, and then at the 10 second mark being spotted, then dying after his blood levels dropped. So progress! Also dat art! lol

Night Stalker Postmortem

It’s a bit late for a postmortem, being 3 days till the end of voting, but I have been wanting to write one and have been to busy to get to it so here we go.

Overview

First of all I’ll start off by saying this was my first Ludum Dare, and really my first game jam; I’m really happy that it went successfully for me. Now let’s get into it, starting Ludum Dare 27 I had an idea of what I wanted to do. I had this idea that I would have a zombie game with no violence from the player, sort of an obstacle avoidance game. I started working on it right away. Fortunately I quickly realized that this idea could not be realized in the 48 hours given. I quickly came up with an idea for a basic stealth game (with some inspiration from friends, of course). My initial vision for the game was huge, I had to lay down and count to ten before I could calm down and start to shrink it down and I think I made sacrifices in the right areas. If you are interested you can go play the game here.

What I Would Change

Going through the development process I spent a lot of time testing for bugs myself and fixing them in programming which led to other areas of my game, such as art and sound, suffering. I think the best thing to do would be to have some people to test my game for me. Unfortunately I don’t really have the resources for that yet. Another thing I would do is to establish a code base before starting development; I found myself rewriting scripts I had written a million times before. As for the game I’m not quite sure what I would change; I felt like it had a good game mechanic and is simple enough to be played easily, yet complicated enough to make for interesting game play. I would have liked to add more to Night Stalker: implement some obstacles, bigger levels, more interesting scenery, etc. Even though I did not get everything I wanted implemented I feel like it was a great first run and an amazing confidence booster; with the compo I had that urge to make a game again, to create a world, and I did and it felt great.

Post Compo

After the compo I took a step back from my PC for awhile, I attended PAX Prime here in Seattle, had some friends over, and brewed on the idea of continuing development on Night Stalker. Now that the judging is almost over, and I’ve been getting mostly positive feedback and good criticism I think I’m ready to work on a post-compo version of the game. I want to take it a step further though. I’m shifting all my extra time that I usually use for experimentation and slowly piecing together another game of mine to work on a more realized version of Night Stalker (perhaps a name change to something a little less “disturbed teenage boy” ) . I plan on adding some “dimension” quite literally and also some more depth in the game play and story areas. If anyone is interested in checking it out I’ll be doing updates as I go on my website bearmacstudios.com. if you read through all of this I seriously commend you and thank you. I wish I could have participated more in the community, but perhaps I’ll embrace it more come next compo.

Until next time,

Hunter “Mactinite”

tl;dr

Ludum Dare 27 was amazing, check out what I made if you want here, and I’ll be expanding upon this idea and detailing it on my website bearmacstudios.com

This is what made me go and play your game. Amazing work!

Also thought I’d let you know that you have the highest reported score so far, second to mine of course 😉 lol

LD28

Okay, So I’m (We’re?) in.

So this dare will be my second. I participated in LD27 and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. I did it myself, and while I didn’t get a lot of recognition I did complete(enough of) a game to submit and it was a huge confidence booster. This time ’round I might be going for the Jam with a friend, however he is undecided whether he wants to participate, so for now we will see what happens. Regardless these will be our tools:

Engine: Unity3D (wiff 2D tools? :3) paired with the newest Monodevelop cause it’s so purdy.

3D art?: Blender

2D art: Photoshop/Gimp

Music: Depending on if we have a team. This field is undecided. Maybe cgmusic, that turned out well last time. :)

SoundFX: Still not sure here.. Maybe some free assets. Not sure.

tl;dr: Such indecisive, much not sure, wow.

To anyone using the new 2D tools in unity:

So while messing around with the new tools and digging around in the forums at the Unity website I found something I know I’ll be able to use in this coming Dare and if not perhaps in another project. It’s a 2D character controller akin to the 3D one found in the standard assets. I’m sure if any of you have spent the time to scrape the surface of the Unity forums on the 2D topic have found this already, but I figure it can’t hurt to post it here!

https://github.com/prime31/CharacterController2D

And if you guys are curious I found it in this thread:

http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/212107-2D-Resources

So a big thanks to Prime31 studios for sharing this great tool with the unity community. I figure it would only be a disservice to not share it here.

Here’s their website:

http://prime31.com/

I want to make it really clear that Prime31 studios get’s all the credit they deserve for this great tool under the Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license.

If you’re curious here’s the simple explanation page for it and the more thorough license page. (both of these can be found at the bottom of the the Github page btw)

simple explanation: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/deed.en_US

actual license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/legalcode

So good luck to everyone this weekend, and once again a thanks to Prime31 Studios.

Great links. Thanks.

I have a question for you guys….

This being my second Ludum Dare and my first Jam and I had such a wonderful time last time, I was thinking of documenting this with an autobiogradocumentasupervlog™®©. Basically I want to take little tiny vlogs here and there throughout the jam documenting the trials and tribulations of the jam. Now for the question(s)….

How many of you think this would be a good idea? Would you watch it? do you think other people would watch it?

I’m going to do it regardless and see how it turns out but I  think it would be nice to get some feedback from you guys here.

Thanks! :3

Please do! The insight is always welcome.

Just a little update….

So we have a game idea and art style but now we are struggling with how to implement it without making it too easy or too hard, but here’s a gif!

youonlyhaveone

Starting to Resemble a game!

So we’re coming up on the end here and our  game is actually starting to resemble a game! Let’s go down our list:

Some dialogue!

Dialogue… Check!

Combat!

Combat….. Check!

Epic title screen!

Epic title screen…. Check!

What next you may be asking, what else could I possibly do to make this better?

WELL I’m glad you asked

I’ve got to finish the level, polish up the tutorial, AND make a way for you to actually die.

What do you think of the style?

P.S. yes I know their scarfs are blowing in different directions, but that’s not the point!

LD29

I’m in, again!

This Ludum Dare will be my third, and the second one I’ll be attempting with assistance from a friend. Every time I have participated in Ludum it has been a positive experience, often resulting in becoming a better programmer/game developer because of it. I have limited formal education in the ways of software development yet Ludum Dare allows me to flex my current, albeit small, library of knowledge and the community is top-notch (Thanks for that guys, that’s amazing, really). Back on track with my obligatory “In” post; Not much has changed as far as tools and stuff goes, but here’s what we’ll be using:

Engine

  • Unity3D

Graphics

  • Photoshop
  • Gimp
  • Possibly some other open source pixeling tools (like krita)

Audio

  • Audacity
  • LMMS
  • Whatever we can get our hands on really.

With all that said, anyone else out there got some engine stuff that would be better suited to a programmer in development? Unity is amazing and a very deep tool that can do almost anything I would want it to, however I want to broaden my mind. With that said I have some questions for the community:

What are you guys using?

Are you a programmer or an artist?

Successful first night!(?)

Finally, after a few hours of main menu design we got an idea for a  game. We’re not letting details slip too soon but we think we got a good one ;)

What I can share is the title screen with the name of the game!

Robo Drill! err uhh wait…

RoboDrill

The Good, The Bad and the Drill. No wait that’s not it…
TheGoodTheBadTheDrill

Drill Harder! What? No…
DrillHarder

Drill Bill! I think this thing is broken…
DrillBill

Game Finished!

So we finished up our game and posted the entry before the end of the jam so we could get some feedback before tomorrow! This is the third Ludum Dare in a row that I’ve completed and I have been good about getting a game in all the time so that’s a big accomplishment for us. This is another new thing for me with putting in controller support and fully animated windows and transitions, the game feels really complete. 99.9% of all the pieces was made by us (only exceptions being NGUI and Unity as well as some controller images and a font) So without further adieu we give you:

DRILL BILL

Popping up behind some tawls

Death screen.

This game is kinda hard.

Arena Selection

Choose your arena!

Exploding turtles!

Blasting some tawls

Drill Bill Title Screen

The title screen!

So if you want go and play it here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-29/?action=preview&uid=26320

If you guys have any feedback please let me know either here or on twitter @mactinite.

Thanks in advance!

It’s been a good one!

Unity Web Templates

Hey everybody!

So I got bored today and made myself some Unity Webplayer templates that use bootstrap (a little overkill maybe, but it works just fine.)

Anyways since some people may get a bit tired of the standard Webplayer templates or want something to add that little polish go ahead and use on of these guys! I did throw in a little attribution for myself at the bottom with a link to my twitter, but feel free to remove all of that if you want.

Dark | Light

Here’s the link to download the unity package: https://db.tt/mLPb3MNP

I personally prefer the darker theme, but maybe a light theme will be more appropriate for some games.

Let me know what you guys think!

Thanks,

Mactinite

Nice. I also like to have it taking the full client area of page.

I’m In 4 : A new GUI

So with Unity releasing a beta of the new GUI I figure, what better time to test a new system than with a 48 Hour competition with no time to wait for bug fixes?!

So here I am, again, for the fourth time.

I’m In!

Tools

Engine:

Unity3D 4.6 beta

Sprites, Graphics:

Photoshop, Pickle Editor.

Sounds, Music:

BFXR, Audacity, LMMS.

Anything else I can’t think of right now. But I’ll see you all out there! Good luck, and have fun!

Progress (?)

So I think I have an idea, so here’s a mockup of what I have so far:
