Time to declare

Hi,

My name is Mateusz and I am (actually, I’ll officially become one in October) a university student, majoring in computer science. This is my first Ludum Dare, but I have some previous experience with game making challenges – I took part in two PyWeek challenges:

I’ll be using:

  • python/pygame or c++/SDL or… AGS. Something suggests me to use the third platform or something even less popular among LD participants. Any interesting and simple ideas?
  • GIMP for graphics, depending on the theme it may be supported by hand-drawn sketches
  • Audacity and TuxGuitar for the audio

I’d like to make a time-lapse video, but it seems I’ll be hopping between Windows and Ubuntu during my development, so it may be difficult. About the time spent – I’m not going to lock myself up in the basement for the challenge, so I don’t think I’ll spend more than 10 hours during the whole challenge. I’m gonna try coding something for the compo, but I don’t feel the need of making it. There is still a possibility that I’ll just play Simutrans and meet with my friends all the weekend.

I’ll work here

I know this is slightly out of fashion, but as I don’t have any previous LD games to combine their screenshots into a montage, here is my working environment.

Yeah, I know it’s messy – it’s destined to be like this.

Oh, and I just realized that I won’t be able to code during most of Saturday, so possibly will make it into Jam. Or maybe not at all. I’ll try, though.

Strangely enough… He does not, in fact, live in England.

Finally an idea

After a few hours of brainstorming, I’ve got an idea that is simple enough. So…

  • There are three trenches – two are occupied by enemies, one by lone soldier, who’s out of ammo (that’ll be player)
  • When player is hidden in a trench, enemies don’t shoot. Player can move in the trench and stick his head out of it (enemies shoot then)
  • Goal: to survive and make the enemies kill each other

I have to go now, so after 9,5 hours of challenge, I’ve done:

  • 2 hours of brainstorming
  • 0 hours of asset creation
  • 0 hours of coding.
