yay. Blogue.

No-one’s going to read this, so I may as well vent.

We’re collectively Unhappy with the theme. OR I’m unhappy with the theme and I surround myself with yes-men. And one no-woman for good measure, but she’s easy to ignore because she’s not “core team”. We are not happy, anyway.

Also, embarrassingly, my windows bitch has had a better time getting löve working than I have. It turns out that one unsatisfied dependency install error is more than enough to jolt me to inaction when I’m despondently uninspired. Unsatisfied dependencies suck. I’ll get him to write everything and I’ll just add unnecessary semi-colons and whine about his not installing my media keys properly in Linux by refusing to skip crappy songs.

Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters time. Oh, it’s only 10am? Eh, being branded an alcoholic is a small price to pay.

Central story type campaign descisions

After considering essentially making a more graphically sophisticated version of Pong, but playing tenis against a wall, in much the exact same way I was forced to do in school, we have decided on being “inspired” by two things

  • the Modron dungeon in PS:Torment.
  • the Cure song “a Forest”

It should be pretty obvious, if you’re familiar with either of those things, what we’re going to do. Probably as a side scroller, because we’re boring.

Maybe we’ll have a sort of “time limit” in that you can literally starve/bleed (via DOT) while searching. We’re unlikely to win any “fun” categories! But it’s not about the winning, it’s about the learning and the creation of something frustrating and depressing!

prögress! A bit, anyway.

Right, so far we have:

  • created a little program that when you press the “down” key, adds “downpressed” to the screen until it runs out of screen space. Hardcore.
  • created a little program that shows, on a spotty background, a random number, which is now formatted in COMIC SANS! I didn’t actually ask Audit to do this, and I don’t see the relevance, but… at least he’s keeping busy.
  • I’m not entirely sure what Dreadlocks has done. Something terribly important, I’m sure. I’ve asked him to write a random function that says “tree tree tree” until eventually saying “house”. He’s having a hard time with Lua, but, then he’s not a computer science or computing student, so that’s understandable (I wasn’t expecting him to do programming, his job was coming up with the game concept and getting everyone drunk, both nicely achieved already)

Given we’ve had a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster each, apart from Audit, who’s far too professional for that, this is not going too badly. Tree is not here, and may or may not ever turn up. I’m busy slacking off and talking to Delicate Romantic AK47, the “external history consultant”. But we’re mostly talking about how my we like boobs, so it probably doesn’t count as work.

Can’t see the forest for the tiles…

The forest of loneliness is being assembled, whilst I watch the Morgue Faerie steer the good ship Audit into the Sea of Insanity. Convoluted metaphors aside, I am very much enjoying the Faerie explaining  their artistic vision to Audit.

“I hate you so much”

“I just wanted to see what happens!”

The fun continues…

Martini Dreadlocks

The music, the tree, and the dangly balls of fire

We’ve managed to get our trees the way we want them, and there is now a loop of scary xylophone music to accompany it.

On an unrelated note, Audit fell in love with Satan’s genitals.

I think its time for a break.

Aerrors Aevriwhere.

Back from a productive evening of drinking many shots and trying to explain some of the finer points of transsexualism and why my gender identity does not automatically make everyone dating me androsexual… while constantly claiming [my boyfriend] Audit’s gay anyway, for ordering girly drinks (What self-respecting man would get a “golddigger” cocktail pitcher? Caramel vodka and DIET COLA? I felt emasculated just trying it.)

Okay, we’ve found that, for no logical reason the graphics don’t load properly on my machine, which given I was about to take over the reigns on the graphics programming, is  a bit of  a massssive pain. It’s also a deployment issue, given that “on 1/3 computers it doesn’t work” isn’t exactly a selling point… though actually, now I’ve had a good look at the graphics, it technically MIGHT be… Thankfully, Dreadlocks is using linux, so we know it’s not a general linux issue. If anything it would be because we had  a hard time getting a recent version of Löve on my laptop (rep problems) and Audit probably installed it wrong. Yeah, probably either how he coded it or how he installed stuff. Definitely his fault.

Also, for some reason I was the only person who was getting error messages from a function call which generated a variable and first occurred AFTER the first call to a function using that variable. I fixed it, but I wonder why it worked nonetheless for everyone else. The issues are easily explained by versioning discrepancies, but there don’t appear to be any… Nah, I just say that to sound technical, I can program and I can do theory, but anything goes wrong and pop, I call in someone who enjoys that kind of problem solving, I know enough of them that I never had to learn.

Even MORE disturbing, Audit’s stupid ass case-insensitive piece of crap OS has caused him to suffer bugs when his working code is packaged (since the love packages are not so forgiving) and when the files are ported to a grown up’s OS, it breaks. Not there’s actually anything inherently WRONG with case insensitivity, but it has caused this problem, where strictness would not have.

Day 2, no news

We are officially half way through the Jam, and we’ve done nothing so far today. Basically, everyone’s like, well, we have a forest, we have some music… Bored now! Dreadlocks can’t make it today, which is a shame because someone who can run up a note-for-note copy of The Forest’s piano track in like, 10 minutes with nothing but a synthesizing program for linux and one listen to the song is a good person to have around. For morale alone.

I might even have to boot into windows. EWWW. I want Audit to install Linux so I can boot into Windows, he can boot into Linux, and then we can swap.

We have a forest, at least!

With barely any time left at all, we essentially have: A little girl walking through a somewhat poorly randomly generated forest. BAM. Is there a booby judging category? It’s as good as ours!

Aims for the day: get the little girl to do a punching gesture when you press space. Add music.

Incredibly optimistic goals: add an enemy to each page of forest, implement retarded combat system.

Almost definitely NOT happening: end room and final boss.

Not Submitting what is essentially just animation

Instead of programming, we went off to watch episode after episode of Johnathan Creek. I regret nothing.

I think we learned a lot, well… okay, we learned how to make arrays full of pictures of trees in Lua/Love, and now I have an entirely different and much less user-friendly version of Linux installed. Also, I learned that I completely hate Audit and hope he dies from brain cancer caused by radiation emitted from my monitor at precisely the angle of “reading code over my shoulder and making me so angry I hard reset just to spite him the stupid Gack”. If there’s one thing I hate, it’s people looking at stuff I’m currently doing. I mean, who corrects their typos as they go? No-one, it’s more EFFICIENT to go through and correct typos afterwards. I may kill him in his sleep.
