“Gravity Sphere” New Progress

Lots of progress so far. Engine is nearly 100% done, and I’m currently painting the cutscenes and working on the story just a tad more.

Gameplay

One of many paintings for the cutscenes. I took a sheet of paper, dunked it in coffee, dried it, crumpled it, scanned it, and painted on it in Corel. I think it looks very nice.

Another painting

So far the plot goes as follows:
There’s an explorer (nameless right now, but I’m thinking Jacques) who goes into a cave trying to find treasure. However he falls down a pit and is knocked unconscious. Later he’s awoken by a mysterious cave spirit who can help him out of the cave. It ties a rope to Jacques(or whatever his name is). You control the spirit (and the rope it’s pulling) with your mouse. By clicking the left mouse button, you can tug on the very stretchy rope to pull Jacques closer if needed. Using gravity and quick wit, you can help Jacques out of the dark caves and back to safety. There will be at least 10 to 15 hand-drawn levels and tons of stuff to see and do. I hope to get it done in time!

If anyone read all of that, may I ask if someone wouldn’t mind coming up with a better title for this? I don’t really like “Gravity Sphere” all too much. Thanks!

The “Story” Thus Far

I’m Nate Wiesel, and this is my second attempt at a Ludum Dare game. During Ludum Dare 16 however, I couldn’t finish soon enough due to lack of programming knowledge at the time. However this time, I have a bundle of fresh new ideas! (Freshness of ideas may vary.)

With the theme as ‘Islands’, I wasn’t quite sure what to do at first, but eventually after a lot of experimentation, I came up with making a platformer. My game, now called ‘Island Escape’, has 5 hand-drawn levels (and a final “boss” level) about a nameless guy who washes up ashore on a deserted island, and wants to build a boat to escape. It’s not the most original idea ever but I’m trying to pull some unique concepts out of it and make it at least somewhat enjoyable. I’m usually used to taking my time with projects so it’s a bit tough to do this kind of thing under time constraints, but hopefully I’ll pull through.

Here’s a little bit of what I’m working on:

RAD STAGE SELECT

All done!

Island Escape is now finished!
Check it out here!

“Hopefully I’m not late! This is Island Escape by Nate Wiesel of The Layabouts. (wearethelayabouts.com) It’s a game about a nameless man marooned on a deserted island and must find the supplies to build a boat and escape. A few things at the end were a bit rushed unfortunately but hopefully you all enjoy the game! I put a lot of effort into it.”

“Island Escape” Version 1.1

Since some people were having a lot of problems with the first version of my game, I’ve decided to release a new version fixing a few things (mainly the huge background bug with some graphics cards..) the only things changed are problems, there was NO more content added (which would be against the rules, if I remember correctly) and I got permission from an admin in IRC to make sure it was okay to do this.

Check it out here!

also how did you embed the video into your post?

Maybe the Jam, maybe the Jam..~

Unfortunately I couldn’t get my super wacky Ludum Dare game done in time. However I’ll try and get it done tomorrow for the Compo. I think maybe it was a bit too ambitious to be made in 2 days (I mean, it was basically a big, expansive Metroidvania. Not really the best design for a game being made in so little time.) Oh well. Anyway, here’s a screenshot in the meantime.

Looks awesome. It’s also a relief to know I’m not the only one developing in game maker! Hi-five!

Count me in!

I’ll be participating again! This is my 4th Ludum Dare attempt.

LD16 – I’ve Got You (unfinished)
LD17 – Island Escape (Got into the top 20!)
LD19 – Luminant (not finished on time, released later)

This time I’ll be using Game Maker 8, because that’s what I’m familiar with.

BOOOM!!!

Great Job. Hope to see a lot of progress!

All done! (Well, more or less)

Play it HERE!!

“A Really Big Rock is a simple puzzle-platformer about a young man named Jer and a really big rock that you can use to break things and crush the skulls of your enemies!

NOTE: I plan on adding more content and a “proper” ending later, possibly during the Jam. The game itself is fully working and has a decent amount of fun content thus far. I hope you enjoyed it, I really worked hard!”
