Almost done with the mechanics

2017-12-04em02-46-02.gif I'm a script away from finishing the mechanics. I'll get the most sleep I can and get to level design and graphics. 2017-12-04/em02-48-12.gif 2017-12-04_02-49-01.gif Lava lamp.

Strap in and get ready to...

... oh yeah, pass out because of sugar overdose and sleep deprivation. Don't we all love it? Anyway, this is going to be my third LD, hopefully this time there won't be any bullshit compliling errors. Also, I made a wallpaper! Wandering Rogue - small update

So... I added builds for Linux and Mac, I'm pretty confident the Linux one'll work. As for the Mac one, I guess you'll have to find out! webgl-logo.png There's also a web build that was a nightmare to set up on Gamejolt. It works fine now, though. The game's kind of inspired by roguelikes, but I don't think it's replayable enough to care if it saves or not. That's why I made a web build. Wandering Rogue: a Bad Post-Mortem

A few days ago, I've uploaded a Ludum Dare game for the third time in my life. But this time was different. [Not really]

The begginning of the Jam

ApplicationFrameHostem2018-04-23/em21-53-44.png My first reaction after seeing the Twitter post was, obviously:

Peanut butter and pickles? Seriously?!

Then, the search for ideas began. Like for so many others, my mind has been wiped clean by the theme. It itself was not bad, but the creativity was just escaping my brain like water from a bucket with half its area corroded straight through. A Ludum Dare does that to a human; You just have to find a way to work around it. My first idea was a platformer using text as platforms, but I quickly ran into a roadblock that would take up way too much time to fix. So I settled on a roguelike-inspired platformer.

> 8 hours and 44 minutes later...

I actually got the basic prototype up and running pretty quickly, and all the core game mechanics were in place within the first 24 hours! Getting it done so quickly was a first time for me, and I felt pretty good with myself. 2018-04-21_08-41-22.gif

The oh, so lovely polish

I'm no artist, but I felt relieved that only minor additions to the game's code were all what was left in the programming aspect. I was wrong. "Art is easy, the game will be done in no time!" - I thought to myself.

Actually, no I didn't. That's a lie.

In the first few minutes of creating tiles I grew more and more aware that there's still a long way to go. After about 5-6 hours of ensuring myself that I have no idea about any form of art, I finished working for the day and went to sleep.

The frantic, eventful, and disastrous second day

Up until this point I was assuming my game was going to be meant for the Jam, like my first two entries(One of which I didn't even finish on time). However, the speed at which I managed to finish the core features of the game actually gave me the oppourtunity to participate in the Compo category. And I decided to take it.

That was stupid.

As usual, in the last few hours before the deadline, the bugs started arising. It got to a point where the engine was breaking by itself, without me even interfering with it in any way. I was considering reinstalling it 2 minutes before the submission hour. The game definitely turned out a lot less polished than it would have if I decided to take the Jam, obviously. However, it was my first LD game I managed to finish on time for the Compo.

Overall, I'm pretty satisified with what I've manged to do in 48 hours. I'm definitely looking forward to the next LD.

Oh yeah, if you're interested, feel free to play and rate my game! Unityem2018-04-23/em02-59-31.png

LD 42

Hey, I made a lil' Atari inspired wallpaper!

Since I made a wallpaper last time, I might as well keep that going. Here it is: LD42WP_By@Dingalong13.png

Also, here's a cleaner version, as suggested by marcel from the LD Discord server. LD42WPemBy@Dingalong13/emv2.png

I wish everyone an exceptionally enjoyable Ludum Dare! mp3.png

I'm an idiot help

Why the hell did I choose to make a puzzle game, I hate level design

LD 44

I'm (probably) in.

I'd really like to participate in LD once again, however there are two factors that might potentially interfere with that. Firstly, my finals start in a week. That's a huge chunk of my time. Secondly, my game engine is nowhere near completion. If I was better at time management and were more disciplined, I would probably eaisly find the time to resolve both of these issues. But alas, we'll have to see.

Ludum Dare 45

I'm probably in! Also, wallpapers!

As is tradition, for every LD I participate in I have to create a wallpaper. This time I've been inspired by some of the best themes the Theme Slaughter has to offer, namely: - ☃ (of course); - a small world (Because re-using themes from a couple of jams ago is such a good idea); - floating islands (an absolute classic).

Both variants of the wallpaper are available in 4K.

Unsure about the engine I should use for the upcoming LD.

I'm trying to decide whether I should use my own engine, which I'm quite comfortable and experienced with, but which is limited in some aspects(e.g. I'm not able create web builds), or if I should try and get back to grips with Unity, which I've last used about a year ago. Any advice?

Done! Finally!

I'm so relieved. The only thing left to do is gather some screenshots.
