LD18

My first LD. More like NanoLD.

Hi, this is my first LD post and my first LD compo. Nice to meet you. I don’t expect it to go very well, because in all actuality I might have about 12 hours to work on the game, if I’m lucky. A demanding and non-sleeping 2 year old will do that to you. But nevertheless, I’m going to give it a shot.

My intended toolset is JavaScript/HTML5 (Canvas), Photoshop, and TextMate. I really love JavaScript (in fact, just finished up a JS1K demo last weekend: http://js1k.com/demo/285), and in addition to being a cool language, it’s well suited for pumping stuff out super fast.

See you at the finish line!

I’ve never heard of js1k, thank you for posting the link! I LOVE your absolutely amazing entry, it totally blew me away. You have created Zelda in less than one Kb. Phenomenal. Can’t wait to see what amazing things you create this weekend! Best of luck.

Oh yeah, I meet your non-sleeping 2 year old (2.5 year old actually) and raise you a one month old! Heh, I’ll be lucky to even start!

OSX Timelapse

I haven’t been able to find a timelapse tool that works on OSX yet (Chronolapse runs, but doesn’t seem to start grabbing screencaps?), but as it turns out, it’s very easy to write a script to do this:

while true ; do sleep 60 && echo `date`‘ Capturing screenshot…’ && screencapture -C -m -t jpg -x -f cap.`date +%s`.jpg ; done

I’ve put the script here in my LD project on github: http://github.com/newobj/ludumdare/blob/master/tools/osx-screencap.sh

Just run this guy and you will start getting cap.*.jpg files in the current directory every 60 seconds. They’ll sort chronologically, which is necessary for compiling them into a movie.

When you’re done and have your mountain of JPG’s, you can use Time Lapse Assembler to turn them into a movie (it will also scale them down!)

If anyone knows of a better solution than this for OSX, please enlighten me. :)

I found this tutorial a month or so ago. Sounds like it’s along very similar lines though. I guess there’s no all in one app for it yet so everyone’s throwing together shell scripts for it.

Hi I’ve made a shell script that both continuously captures OS X screen(s) at preset intervals and combines these images into an mp4 movie file.

Workspace shot

It usually is this clean, actually. Note how my sweaty left palm has eroded whatever material it is that coats the MacBook Pros. Scary.

5 hours do not a game make.

Really bummed, I only ended up getting about 5 hours to work on my game this weekend. I might switch to jam formation and try to finish something late tonight, we’ll see.

I’m pretty proud of the pixeling I did for my ltitle army dude guy, and that took up most of my time (being a programmer, the pixels do not come easily.)

I did start to put together quality beginnings of a JavaScript/Canvas engine – Screen, Buffer, Joystick, Sprite, Animation, and Loader classes. You can march the little dude around.

You can check out my progress at github:

Changing my votes (PS: I’m in)

Doing LD48 this time around. As ever, the goal is to just finish.

I had a lot of plans about making a shooter inspired by how much fun I recently had with Gun Godz but needless to say that drained out of me instantly upon hearing the awful news coming out Connecticut this morning. As the father of a 4 year old, it’s just utterly unimaginable to think of hurting a child. What happened this morning is inconceivable and unspeakably heinous. I actually just got home from dropping my son off at school when I heard the news. My heart goes out to the parents who dropped their kids off today and said goodbye and never ever imagined it would be their last goodbye. Ugh, I just can’t even think about it anymore.

Time to remove that “+1” from “You Are The Villain”.

☠️ S L A U G H T E R E D ☠️

Man, I guess I was really picky!

This is the first time in following Ludum Dare literally since it began (yes, I'm that old) that I will be able to fully participate. All of my life obligations have miraculously lifted; I have two full days to put into this without interruption. I'm kind of excited.

Neon Core: Deckbuilder Hacking Sim with a splash of Vaporwave

This was my progress as of about 30 hours into the compo last night:

https://youtu.be/e4XtzcToj8g

I have 6 hours to finish this ... uhh ... yeah :P

N☰ON ◥◤ COR☰ -- "done!"

Well, it's not much, but it's done!

There's no deckbuilding, unfortunately, but you can play through your starting hand to either defeating the AI or losing to it.

I'm mainly just happy to have finished my first Ludum Dare :)

BTW, follow me on Twitter: @newobject --- and if you are a fx/technical artist who is interested in this idea and wants to collaborate further post-LD, let me know! This is just the beginning!

Ludum Dare 45

I might be in!

I've been following Ludum Dare for ... 10? 15 years? And have only been able to do it twice so far, due to dadding responsibilities. My wife has agreed to solo parent this weekend, and so (THEME WILLING), I'm tentatively in for LD45!

((prays to theme gods for something inspiring))

And.... back out

Yesterday I announced I was finally going to get a chance to LD (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/$163448/i-might-be-in) and then this morning in the shower my wife reminded me she had a (long ago planned) get-together with her girlfriends out of town this weekend .... whyeeeee .... farewell LD45 I hardly knew ye :(

((Just wanted to whine.))

Ludum Dare 46

I'm in!

I'll be using my custom engine built on Love2D. It's come a long way since the last LD, so I have no excuse not to be productive!

My hopes: * Not a COVID theme ... that will be very triggering * A theme that lends itself well to a systems-oriented game * To not be stupid, and scope my idea reasonably :P

Ludum Dare 48

I'm in!

If by in, you mean "will quit the compo about 15 minutes after the theme is announced", then yes, I'm in :)

This is always aspirational for me. Tired-ass dad life never leaves me with enough energy to Ludum Dare. Sometime the LD should run from Monday->Wednesday so we can all start fresh-faced after a relaxing weekend :) (Err, those of us that work M-F, at least...)
