I'm In

This is my second time entering! Stoked and really love the theme! Good luck to everyone (1 hour later ;p)

Connecting is Cool!

Just took a short break from my game and went to check out some other streams on twitch! REALLY COOL that we can do this! Helps grow the community bonds! Cool ideas coming out so far! GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!

That Moment You Realize.....

So I've been working on a major mechanic in my game for the entirety of this morning and got a basic system in place. Having done this I just realized I need to calculate a bunch of stuff on the fly and make sure things don't implode on themselves right away. (Basically super super accurate mathemecations!) So! What do I do?

REVISE THE GAME!

Just wanted to leave this out there in case anyone else is hitting the same roadblock at this point! Don't stop...don't make a new game...take what you have and revise it with smaller scoped mechanics!

YOU CAN DO IT!

TL;DR; I'm trying to programatically create orbits that don't implode... Time to think of a new way to play the game!

Progress so far...

So this is the results of what I have so far after having to do a bit of a rewrite to what my game was going to do! Hoping to get the mechanics finished tonight and then spend tomorrow working on artwork and scene transitions!

LDCompo 38 Post Mordem - 2nd time around...got something

TL;DR; Second compo and there's still so much more to learn! Also takeaways at the bottom!

So this is my second Compo and I've learned SOOO much this time around! My first one was a few years ago and I made the unfortunate mistake of trying to do everything myself; I was going to make a game using Java cause that's what I knew. Since then I've tried to be a little more serious about Unity and learning and and it's paid off!

Prior to this Compo I was start two Unity projects. One that didn't get far at all (just the camera moving down a hallway) and another, that I'm going to return to now, that I managed to get some basic character movement and multiplayer in place! The second game is one I want to make for my YouTube community so it's definately one to come back to!

Anywho in this Compo I knew time management would be a BIG issue because 1. I had been sick all week and still was, 2. I have a 3 year old and an 11 month old who is weaning and teething, and 3. My wife and kids JUST got sick Thursday and it got full blown Friday afternoon. Knowing that I knew I couldn't spend NEARLY as much time as I did the first time trying to come up with an idea. I figured that first night 1 hour to brainstorm and the rest of the night to get started, Saturday for mechanics and coding and whatnot, Sunday for Sprite and Title work (I forgot about sound and music till Saturday night around midnight O_O)

I knew I needed to keep the scope small and thought I had with my first game idea (it never got a name so i'm just gonna call it FGI in this post). I had it down and I was excited about it and got started coding maybe 1 hour and 15 minutes into the Compo.

After taking time to put the kiddos to sleep and all that I spent some time coding and got some prefabs set and all that. Spent Saturday trying to help my wife with the kids and trying to keep myself healthy....oh and trying to stay away because the night before when I was ready for bed my 11 mo old decided it was time to get up and stay up till 4 am.

Saturday I was up and at em at 9 and started my Gravitational Pull mechanic. When I finally finished it by 3 pm I knew I wouldn't be able to bring FGI into reality because I had to somehow perfectly Instantiate objects to represent a solar system and push them just right to keep them in orbit. Time to adjust with what I have and make something of it. I spent the rest of Saturday ironing out bugs, refining my Gravity mechanic, and refactoring code.

Sunday I wasn't able to get started till 2 pm (the Compo was ending at 8 PM so I knew I had to rush). My cold/flu/sick hit again full force so I was forced to stay in bed till later :( Anyway I was able to re-use some title stuff I had from and old project and knew I would spend a lot of time working on the music and sound (cause I never done that before). My hopes were it might go well and I could revist my mechanics to add some randomization, and "end state", and other important stuff.

That didn't happen...but I had SOMETHING to show for it this time around and it was ALMOST an entire game! I had a great back story and idea and am going to make sure I commit to finishing this game the way it was meant to be before I move on!

TL;DR;

Takeaways

  • Really think SMALL SCOPE and be prepared to adjust along the way. Don't throw away what you have just because something won't fit...make what you have work with a new idea!
  • The internet is REALLY good at helping with things and if you take time to really understand things and don't just fast-forward through the teaching videos you can really do good!
  • Test, test, test, test, test!
  • Be sure you save an hour before submission time to ensure that your build works as it does in the Editor. I ran into a weird but where my gamescript was running even though it was in the editor...it was weird
  • MOST IMPORTANT TAKEAWAY! Don't let YOU get in the way of accomplishing your dream and doing something! It's going to be hard to learn it but when you do it feels SO GREAT! There were so many moments I thought, "I'm never going to figure this out and i'm going to waste so much time and not have anything to show for again." Eventually i'd find the answer and things just fell into place!
  • Keep coding outside of these jams! Each time I step into a project or try to tackle a new aspect of game developing I never encountered I learn new things and then think back to past struggles and realize I could have done them better!

Best of luck to all of you in the Compo and still grinding out the Jam! Can't wait till I get another opportunity to enter the Compo! I'm hoping to have a few games under my belt by then ;)

I'm In but...

I'm totally in on this one but with a new baby on the way and trying to take care of the fam (wife included due to her being in bed rest) we'll see how this round turns out :) I missed the last Jam and was quite depressed about it....but I've been working on my game and am excited at the prospects of what this Jam is gonna make!

5 hours in...

Let me preface this by saying I knew I wasn't going to be able to devote the entire 48 hours period to the compo because of my wife on bed rest with baby number 3 and me having to watch the kids....plus having cabin fever because we've basically been unable to go anywhere for 8 months...but I digress.

I woke up early on Saturday to get a head start on the day and o as much as I could....might have gotten bout 5 hours in and came up with this so far!

I like that I limited myself EVEN MORE because it really taught me to simplify AS MUCH as I can! I also figured out a major issue I've been having with Rotations in Multiplayer so the compo is a WIN overall for me no matter if I get an entry in or not!

Going to see what I can accomplish today...maybe even spend Monday doing what I can to enter the JAM...we'll see. Hope you guys like it? ;p

Keep up the good work everyone and GOOD LUCK FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE COMPO/JAM!!! WIP.gif

Stepping out...

I'm officially stepping out of the Jam cause I know i'll have nothing by the end but I will return when I get this game to a playable state to get some input from you guys! Definately taking the concept I got from this jam and using it to be the new canvas for the game i've been working on over the last few months (but is so full of tested code and stuff that it's super messy). I was able to figure out and implement some new things I had been struggling with in my previous project so it makes sense to sort of start with a new canvas and start transferring over the old project! Best of luck to the rest of you in the jam and GET TO RATING THOSE COMPO GAMES!!!!!

:)

In In In

This is my third Jam (I guess techincally my 4th but I couldn't be as involved in my third one due to family illness). Going with what i've been learning over the last few years (Unity) and going to continue to work on really REALLY simplifying my idea so as not to kill myself on time

Day 1 - Not as Productive as I'd Like

So I had a hard time coming up with ideas for the theme. Watch about an hours worth of indie dev talks when the theme was announced and played some Forager (Closed Beta) while I thought more.

Initially had 2 ideas (one I like more for simplicity's sake) but wanted to come up with something that would fit another jam I want to be in. After wrestling with it for hours I finally stuck with my gut and started making a partial prototype about 2 hours ago with some code allowing for runtime randomness....

Going to head to bed now (2 AM) and hope for a more productive day tomorrow... Want to sleep for a few hours but that will probably turn into 5-6 hours with me waking up around 9 or 10.

Still haven't come up with a title yet but "Space is Money" or "Space is Running Out" are two I'm toying with. Anywho here's a little screenie of what I've got thus far!

Day 2 - New Idea & Progress!

So I ended up waking up today thinking about how to further develop my original idea but then something new hit me as I was getting ready!

Welcome the NEW Forklift Simulator! 2018-08-11_15-11-40.gif

Driving mechanics could use some work but i'm happy with what i've got so far :) Gotta try to implement the other stuff now!!!!

Day 2 - Progress - Might Be Tapping Out

So it's 7 pm on the "second" day and I've gotten this much of the mechanics down. Have to work on a way to get boxes in and work on a way to get boxes onto shelves...which I can think of in my head but in practice it may not work out so swell.

Just getting the box to "sit" on the fork nicely without rotating all the time took me like 3 hours and with a family of 3 kids (4 and younger) it's definately making these jams harder to stay "strictly" focused on. I also have a major event tomorrow so I basically have to get it all done tonight or never :\

Anyway here's progress thus far...I may tap out later today and just focus on my other project i'm trying to get KS ready. We'll see....

DON'T FORGET TO SAVE....or dl this asset (Unity)

Just lost a ton of work due to unity editor crash :\ Thankfully all the "important" bits I saved as a prefab...just gotta reconstruct my scene.

I told myself to DL and import this asset earlier...and I never did....now i'm regretting it BUT i'ma give to the community and say GO DOWNLOAD THIS NOW IF YOU ARE DOING YOUR GAME IN UNITY

Day 2 - Update 3? - Second Wind & Optimus Prime

Ever wish Optimus Prime came to your warehouse/shipping house/store? Well now he can! Got a second wind and remotivated after coming up with this isometric view and making a model...and getting the "core" code working somewhat nicely!

2018-08-11_23-14-52.gif

Just gotta work on some form of "game over"

Day 2 ish - MAJOR Progress - Maybe It's Time To sleep

So it's 2:30 AM....I have a big event later today....but I can't stop! I know if I don't keep going I probably won't have time to get sound and more polish but...whatevs.

Currently have a shelfing area (which would be where you would put the boxes after picking them IRL), a truck that will "randomly" spawn different types of shipments, and a truck that will "randomly" request a given number of items based on what is available.

I want to have a "available space" mechanic on the shipping truck so that if you mess up you may end up missing the quota (and would be adversely affected somehow). But I'm getting tired and I've been surviving off of energy drinks for the last 6 hours so I must resign for the night and hope that maybe...just maybe...I can eek out more work later today.

Enjoy the gif and best of luck to everyone out there! Don't give up and put something out even it's not complete! You never know, people may like the underlying mechanic :)

Bug or feature? Haven't decided yet ;p 2018-08-12_02-39-28.gif

Missed the Compo and going to try to make the jam - Forky

So yesterday was DEFINATELY full for IRL stuff so I totally missed the compo. Going to now see if I can get something ready in the next 9 hours for the jam! May not be as good as some of the other things that teams can do out there but I like my idea/look enough to try and get this thing to the finish line!

For lack of a better name (and to maybe better identify with a "character" instead of just a thing) I've officially called the game "Forky"!

Here's the itch.io link for the current state of the game (which would be what is on the compo had I the time to make the entry yesterday). Stay tuned for the official jam entry!

LD Jam Entry - Forky!

Come play my game Forky and see what kind of game is made when a father tries to balance IRL and a game jam...and what happens when a lone forklift has to work FOREVER!!!!

As with all my jam games there is always way more I want to have but this is the closest to a complete game i've had! Leave a comment/rating and I will do likewise for your game (with the other games I grab from the game list).

Also let me know if you like the potential cause I'd like to make this a small game and do an "official" release somewheres but want to get some input first :) Many thanks and best of luck to you all!

I'm As IN As I Can Be

I'm in for my 4th Compo. Hoping to get some time in given family stuffs but we'll see.

P.S: Guess i'll have to make it super super simple given the restrictions I have....i'll think of it as a Compo+ ;)

P.P.S: Forgot this part; going to be using

Aseprite - Art Godot - Engine Whatever sound apps are easiest

Night 1 - Something Different

Don't usually start my jams with arts but wanted to do something different after a month long jam on endless programming X|

I have my idea though :)

Got a simple walk look and a nice flame job on my ship. Time to work on a attack/interaction animation!

2018-12-01_00-27-36.gif The "high-point" was something I had to scratch my head about for a second to find a funny/nice solution :)

2018-12-01_00-20-37.gif

May Need To Bow Out

Got a lot of family stuff tomorrow and also on Monday so this is probably as far as i'm going to be able to get... I would stay up but being awake/alert tomorrow is important. Here's some gifs for your eyeballs

2018-12-01_09-13-39.gif Little Slimey with idle, bash, and bite anims

2018-12-02_02-33-49.gif Current state of the game.

"Sacrifice" would be that you can only hold one item on your back and one in your hand and you need to collect certain things on each level potentially sacrificing good loots (or you would need to use up the precious item your trying to collect to power stronger weapons). There was also going to be a more macro sacrifice that i'll save in case I find time to finish this :)

Good luck to the rest of you guys!
