LD25

Going in head-first!

This will be my first Ludum Dare; after longing to compete for years now, I’m finally taking the plunge.

To get the maximum number of eyeballs on my entry, I’ve been tempted over to going for an entry written using HTML5’s Canvas, and Javascript – two things I can’t say that I have any experience with (well, ok I last touched Javascript about 10-12 years ago…), and for which I have not done a single bit of research on ahead of time. I’ve only spent around 3-4 hours on the compo so far due to Real Life, but considering I was starting with practically zero-knowledge (not even of what tools I should be using), I think I’m making good progress as I’ve got a moderate amount of the basic tech in place and some pieces of ‘sufficient quality’ art made.

For the theme, I was really hoping to see Chaos, End of the World, or Salvage get the top votes, and End of the World almost did, as I had my heart set on an idea what could fit any of those quite well. Luckily, it’s a fairly loose concept, so with a few tweaks I think I’ve come up with a really interesting take on You Are The Villain. It might be a little controversial, but I expect the vast majority will see the humor in it. You’ve been warned! 😉

So yep – I’m going in to my first Ludum Dare head-first (or maybe that’s ass-first). Let’s see how this goes!

Best of luck! Canvas can be a cruel mistress, but it really delivers to the most platforms, so you made a wise choice if only to force yourself to learn it. You should try out ImpactJS some time if you decide it’s worth the dough.

LD26

I’m in for LD26!

I’ll be doing something for LD26 this weekend. Unfortunately I have quite a packed weekend even without LD, so I expect that I’ll only be able to invest around 12 hours total in my entry. I’ll be continuing down the path I started on for LD25 with a HTML5 Canvas game. At this stage I don’t know if I’ll use any libraries, but I will take a quick peek at what’s out there before I begin since I don’t intend to reinvent the wheel as I did last time (which was intentional, for learning).

Let’s hope that the HTML5 audio situation has improved since December…

*edit: I’m going to try going with cocos2D-HTML5; I’ve been using cocos2D on iOS recently, and it sounds like it’ll be a decently easy transition.
