IO – A post mortem!

Lets see. Ludum Dare 29! Oh yeah! It was my first (and not last) ludum dare.
I created a puzzle game known as IO, The games mechanics were to shoot the
red tank, by reflecting the bullets of of mirrors, igniting bombs, blowing up
bricks and using portals. Original I had hoped to create ALOT more content,
But for 72 hours (Of which I porbably only worked 13) I was proud of myself.
I created a basic click n’ place system for the mirrors and a very pixel style
for the game, of which Star made the graphics.

What went well :

  • I finished the game!
  • I created (some) challenging levels!
  • Used a Portal (Valve Game) refrence/element!
  • Found a good soundtrack!
  • Used trusty ol’ sfxr!
  • Created a readmeplzineedtoberead.txt I was proud of!
  • LAMPS!

What did not go well :

  • I did not create the many other puzzle elements I had designed
  • Made a cruddy meny/you won screen
  • Failed to create many levels
  • Failed to crate more than 2 challenging levels
  • Spelling errors
  • My game did not relate enough to the theme
  • My time lapse died out D:
  • BUGS!
  • Bombs not removable once placed
  • Unremovable elements… removable (pre-placed portals)
  • 2 entry, 1 exit portal failure (which then ruined the difficulty of level 15)

But after this journey, I gained a game, To cherish, love and polish at my will. (when im not too lazy)
Oh, and some lovely reviews!

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-29/?action=preview&uid=33501 – Give it a play

To make a post compo, or not to make a post compo

That is the question.

I got some good comments on my game but feels I need a bunch of suggestions to help. I also feel I should change my graphics style, I think minimalistic could be better

Any way go mad! Critisize. I dont care. JUST GOPHER IT

(Yes I am a fan of puns)

oranebeast.co.vu – This is just because I opened a blog up! Yay!

Planvas – Art Experiment

A while back I tried to make a worm game, But created this instead.

You choose a color (Through spacebar or the 123 keys) and overlap to make more vibrant colors and move around to draw,

See an example:

/me sucks at flowers

I suck at flowers

So I’d just like to see your thoughts on this “thing”

Nice flower, bro…

Young persons.

Hello. I’m orane. You knew that. Title on the left. Or up. I don’t know.

I inquire today about young people doing Ludum dare. I have heard a few stories (Tosic in particular) of young people doing LD. I myself am one of them (Aged 13) and I did well *ahem* 36th place for fun *ahem* So I just want to know how old were you when you started LD’s, and who is the youngest you know.

Plug.dj

Hey guys, Yahar.alc made a plug.dj community for djing whilst people create ludumdae games!

Go check it out!

Cell automata

Suprisingly, during development of my minild game, (not finished yet) I created accidental cell automata. Although unpredictable it works and it uses a specific trick. Due to my limited range of gamemaker knowledge, therefore the inability to create a “is this over there” function made me think outside the box. Literally.

The trick

The cell creates a “drone” of sorts that goes either left, right, up or down until it collides with a specific block, if it’s the right block the drone deletes itself and turns that block into the new cell. All of this happens whilst the drone is invisible.

so that’s my little trick and my “go” at cell automata. It’s not really cell automata but it does what it needs to do.

Looking for a team

For this Ludum Dare, I think I’ll go for a team!

What I can do:

Normally I ask people what they want done, Instead of what I can do, But I’ll write this anyway

  • Code (GameMaker/ENIGMA GML)
  • Music (soundcloud.com/oranebeast)
  • SFX
  • Graphics, Very terrible, But never the less they are graphics.
  • Design. (The ideas man. I can think with my brain at a mastery level)
  • Video Creation (Create some videos for people to see wtf your game is)
  • Team Spirit!
  • Odd Jobs (Y’know the types)
  • Level Design (Not very well, But still level design)
  • Other stuff I haven’t listed.

I feel I work well in a team, But my Timzone sometimes mess’ things up, (UTC+12)

I suggest you check out my creations in my profile menu.

So if you need me, Comment. Preferably close to my timezones, But you dont have to be.

Hmm, have you considered the possibility of working with someone in UTC+0? If you’re never awake at the same time, it will be more like working shifts as opposed to ordinary teamwork. It might not work well, but it would be interesting to try. I myself am not in that timezone and am not looking to work in a team anyway, it’s just a suggestion.

I’ll be a team with you 😀 I myself am a very amateur programmer.

Finally A Website

So I finally got a website going. Yay for me!

It has all of my projects, an about me page (With my full name) and ablog.

CODE.THE.CAT

(And I’m not paying a single cent for the domain either!)

I’m (-ish)

For my second ludum dare, I’ll use what I had used but with extras. I hope

I can get round to competing I’m a little stressed for time,

– GameMaker (it’s not bad. Try it.)

– Chronolapse.

– Teh GIMP

– Ableton Live 8

Inverted Post-mortem

During Ludum-dare I created an average arcade game taking place between two creatures with the ability to switch places through their worlds.

What happened:
First I woke up and had a large break fast

photo 2turns out wordpress likes to flip images.

then got to my work station

photo 1it sure loves flipping images.

and began creating.

What went right:

  • I got a basic, playable game in under 4 hours
  • The graphics were amazing
  • Beautiful music.
  • Simple and addictive gameplay (I got addicted myself)
  • Awesome particle effects

What went wrong :

  • Two game stopping glitches
  • 1. Impossible to pass through certain spike arrangements.
  • 2. Random death
  • DUMB non-perceptive people have no understanding the gameplay/core mechanics.
  • Complaints of the music being too loud.
  • The particle effects were not noticed, from their low transperency.

What will happen next time :

  • I’ll prepare more time to work.
  • Clear my weekend.
  • Make the music quiet
  • Make the particles POP
  • Get a setup.

What will I do with the game :
I’ll probably make a post-game, I found my self to love it and others aswell, Plus with a little extra content, It’ll run itself and I won’t need to create as much content in the long run.

You promised a timelapse?
Oh, yes here it is.

orane you glad I didn’t misspell orange again?

Hey! You should check out my game!

Why? Because I told you to. And people said this!

Nice work on this, I liked seeing the Ikaruga-style mechanics in a runner, which I don’t believe I’ve seen before. If you continue this I would recommend a method of ensuring you don’t get “impossible” spawns or long stretches of spawns where you don’t have to interact (you can do this a couple ways, one way is pre-designing segments that work really well and just procedurally generating the segments, or you can figure out the minimum distance needed to swap and make sure things don’t spawn under that distance). Since swapping is the only mechanic you could really play up the polish on those characters and have them animating super cute! Playtest with the colorblind :) Overall really nice work!

You seem to use both this LD theme and previous theme aswell 😀
Simple game, simple graphics, but it all seems very organic and lovely!

Aside from the die-for-no-reason bug, that’s pretty fun! I think it can be a little tricky sometimes to tell what’s a power-up and what’s an obstacle. The music sounds a little harsh, but the sound effects are nice. Overall, I liked it.

The pixel art is very nice, and everything blends together fairly cohesively. The music is nice and fits the game well. If there were no bugs, I can see myself enjoying this game (even more). The random deaths were quite funny to me, but basically eliminate the competitiveness since it is more “player versus game” than “player versus player”.
