LD25

Guess what, it’s an entrance post, deal with it

Hey guys!  Semi-last-minute committing myself to this Ludum Dare compo.

I was actually going back and forth on whether or not I’d enter, since I’ve been jet-lagged and sick all week, and I’m not sure I’ll be a whole lot better by the time the compo has started.  So, my expectations for what I can produce are kinda low.  This is my second time; the first time (#24) I implemented the game idea I had completely, but forgot to actually make it fun or easy to play.

So this time, my goal is to make something small that is at least kinda interesting and fun, if only fleetingly.

Programming: AS3 with FlashDevelop

Visuals:  Paint.net,  maybe Tiled depending on the idea I come up with

Audio: sfxr / Audacity

Library: I might recycle some code from my past LD submission, but that’s probably it.

I’d take a picture of my “work station”, but I’m not really into the whole ‘station’ary thing.  I’ll probably be working in different rooms, take a break at a cafe, lie down on my bed for a while, etc etc.  So as a result, you get a drab all-text post!  Yay!

Good luck everybody, let’s have fun!

This is gonna be…interesting

Well I have an idea, but after some hours of work I don’t have anything really worthwhile to show.  The game is going to involve a lot of art assets, but I have stubbornly refused to start working on them until I’ve met my goals on the programming side.  And the game is text-based, so it’s all about sentence parsing and keywords and stuff, so there isn’t even, I don’t know, collision-detection or physics or anything to show off either.

I’ve never made a game like this before and have never thought about good ways to go about it until I heard the theme, so…yeah, just winging it.  It should be easy enough in general, I’m just not sure how I’m going to fare with the deadline.

To get everything in that I want, I predict the abuse of coffee in my near future.

Coming down the home stretch!

Less than six hours left…feeling the heat.

But yeah, I’m done with programming, sound, and polish.  I could submit the game now and it would play out and not be hideously ugly or broken.  At least, that’s the hope.

I just need to add more content, really, in the form of art and writing, and that’s pretty realistic I think!  Even if I just got one more large level or a couple decent-sized ones I would feel happy with submitting the game.

I’m going to stop writing now and finish this mofo

Aaaaaaand…..submitted!

I really was hoping to give the game more content, but overall I guess I can’t be too unhappy.  It’s a quick little proof of concept which is hopefully quirky enough to entertain people for a bit, and that’s really what I set out to do for this competition (seeing as my last entry was basically unplayable).  And, of course, I always have the option to add more content later on if I feel this is an idea worth fleshing out.

Looking around, I see a lot of interesting looking games.  I can’t wait to see what other people have come up with!
