Nearly Finished The Game

Since I started this game, I’ve been working on the core gameplay and how everything will work. I haven’t even thought about any graphics or sound because that’s not what’s important. My philosophy is that I’d rather hand in a good game with bad graphics than a bad game with good graphics. So far, there’s no sound and everything is colored squares and circles.

Current Features:

  • Day and night cycle
  • Lighting
  • Basic character stuff (moving, collision with wall, ect.)
  • Enemies (All they do at the moment is wander around if chase you if you get in their line of sight)
  • Since I’m a vampire/demon (haven’t decided yet), you take damage if you’re in the sun
  • Hunger
  • Basic user interface (health and hunger bars)
  • Sneaking

Features To Be Added:

  • Enemies attacking
  • Advanced UI (Start menu, options, how to play)
  • Save and load

And once I’ve finished the game, I’m going to add graphics and sound :) I’m not going to bother adding a screenshot, unlike others have done, because it’s just a bunch of circles and squares and you won’t be able to get much, if any, information about the game out of it.

Don’t Know If I’ll Get This Done In Time

Since I only make games as a hobby, there’s no time limit and I can spend as much time as I need to on everything. Because of that, I lose track of time and I’ve never really realized how much time it actually takes to make a game.

I’ve been making this game from scratch in Game Maker: Studio Pro and it is taking forever. I have finished the core gameplay, now working on start menu and pausing (which is taking longer than I thought it would). I also have to get some graphics and sound in to this game because I’ve been using colored squares and circles for testing reasons, I’d rather get the game complete with bad graphics than it not getting completed in time because I focused on graphics too much.

I’m so stressed at the moment, I’m having so much trouble with getting this game together. I wish I had a team, it would be way faster and more efficient. I’m definitely going to get my friends involved in the next Ludum Dare. But for now, I have to focus on finishing this one.

NO pressure! If in the end you really can’t get it done, just take your time and do it for yourself! I too wish I had a team, but I’d need a composer and artist :/

Problems With Being Solo

After lots of hard work, I’ve realized that I could get this game finished within the 48 hours for the first competition, but the only problem is that since I’m not part of a team, I’ve had to use other people’s sprites and sounds. Because of this, I’m not technically allowed to enter in the solo competition which really annoys me. My game is nearly ready to be uploaded and played, be ready for the awesomeness of my game 😀

Finished My Game

Finally finished my game with 1 day to go. Going to sleep, eat, shower and then going to get back in to it and improve the graphics, fix up some bugs and overall polish up the game. I’m happy with what I’ve put up considering it’s my first time competing in a Ludum Dare and I did it by myself. Can’t wait for the next one where I’ll also have friends helping me out 😀

Quick Question

I was just wondering, do you guys prefer playing games in browser with HTML5 or downloading it for windows/mac? Since I’m using Game Maker: Studio Pro I can build my game for all 3 and I’ll upload for all 3, but I was just curious to see what people prefer

I prefer playing games in browser as it just saves me from having to download it.

I also prefer playing in browsers, except for Unity games.

Browser, but having all the options available is probably best.

Okay, thanks for the replies. I’m definitely having a browser based version so that no downloads are necessary, but I’m also going to offer downloads for Windows. For some reason Mac was working :\

Submitted My First Game :)

This is the first Ludum Dare that I’ve participated in and I’ve had heaps of fun. Even though I worked alone and my game is complete rubbish, it’s the journey that counts.
