Post-mortem: LUDUM DARODIUS

play it here

Another LD48 over, and I got some sleep in a warm cozy bed. Which is nice, especially because at the location where I was programming the game, the heating didn’t work o.O

So let’s do a final post for this LD: I was watching many Parodius videos on youtube a few weeks ago, simply because I like the music. Also:

Gradius (original)

Parody + Gradius = Parodius (awesome game)

Ludum Dare + Parodius = Ludum Darodius 😉

What went well:

Graphics: I managed to make lots of animations in GraphicsGale (awesome program), and even though I was like laughing all the time because they looked so funny very close, I don’t regret spending so much time on them 😉

Gameplay: I wanted to make a helicopter game for a long time, and I did!

Alternative challenge: Haha, did I really have a cat in there :)?

What didn’t went well:

Theme: When the theme was announced, I made a draft. And didn’t like it. At all. Made me want to give up, because I like funny games. Kept drafting, but no. And that part alone took  4-5 hours already :/. So I scrapped it all, and scrolled through the posts on this site to get an idea. Until someone had a post with that skunk and the cat of the looney tunes, and then it made *ping* (thanks for that!). ‘Leave me alone’ rather than ‘alone’ alone. Plus, the kitten challenge kept me going

Sleep: Unbelievable, I felt like cr*p after the first night. Getting old :D? At that time I was staring at the code, unable to do anything. So I kept animating and drawing more and more sprites + making concepts for new ones.

And that’s the ranting for this time. Always a nice experience to code and code and code and code 😀

Screenshot for those who don’t make it to the boss (would be sad if you didn’t see the animation ^^). Side scrolling penises!??!? :D:D. They were supposed to look like the mountains from Super Mario

Happy voting!

LD23

I’m in!

Ten year anniversary? Count me in

I think this’ll be like the 7th time of me participating, so let’s all have fun!

Weapons of choice:

Flash, flixel, cfxr, paint.net and a tablet to draw ^^

PlayBook devs here? Offer by RIM

Hey guys! Maybe some of you know, some don’t, but ever since the first October challenge came out (make an app, make a dollar!), quite a few of us have started making apps and publishing them to any app store/market/world/whatever.

Now here’s something that RIM has published (just got the mail) which I thought I should share with you. Essentially it’s the third promo I know of by RIM to get more apps into their App World ^^ (the first two were free playbook devices):

On April 10, 2012 at 12:01 am EST, every 100’th NEW app submitted is eligible for a Prize Package that will bring you to BlackBerry 10 Jam in Orlando, Florida from May 1-3. The 100 app submitted must be approved according to BlackBerry App World Vendor Guidelines and the trip is awarded to vendor of the application. The contest closes on April 26 at midnight EST.

The prize package includes $500 USD cash, a voucher for an airline ticket (up to $1,500 USD in North America and $2,500 USD outside of North America), and a pass to BlackBerry 10 Jam on May 1-3 with four nights hotel.
To make the submission process as easy as possible, simply bring any new app to BlackBerry App World and—if you meet the BlackBerry App World Vendor Guidelines—you’ll have an opportunity to win the prize package.

Winners will be notified by primary email on their BlackBerry App World vendor account. Watch for the latest news at devblog.blackberry.com.

Cheers,
The BlackBerry Developer Program Team

*Full Terms and conditions for the “Attend BlackBerry 10 Jam courtesy of RIM! Contest” offer are located at http://us.blackberry.com//developers/started/100appcontest.jsp.

it’s a bit of a hassle to package apps and signing them, but when you got it, it’s quite simple.

Also, what I just read on Facebook:

Heads up! Attendees of the BlackBerry 10 Jam Conference in Orlando, FL May 1-3 will receive the exclusive BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha prototype device. Get hands-on time with the next generation OS and BlackBerry 10 tools!

so now it’s getting funny :D. as some of us will make something this weekend (me too!) plus the apps made in LD, why not starting spamming RIM with shovelware apps :D. some of us might even get a free trip to florida (posts please!)

one more thing: it’s not like i want to be a promoter for RIM, but i thought i should share 😉

Warmup done

Not much to see here, but it helped me get some ideas

Played around with Google App Engine and tested a few things in Flixel. Still, I think it’s enough to GET CRACKIN’ next weekend 😉

Getting started!

It’s 10 in the morning here in Germany, and my alarm clock woke me up at 6 for me to get the theme of this LD. till now it was enough time for me to continue sleeping plus think about an idea while i was still groggy

Tiny world it is? What I get from that is King Kai from DragonBall, the guy that lives on a small planet

Anyhow, obligatory food image!

1:30 in

Ha! For like 5 LD’s I told myself over and over: dude, it would be nice to see yourself coding/drawing (again)! Make a friggin’ screencast! And DAMN this time I did

Post after 1:30 of effective work

also, here’s the idea sheet

need food again…also, update

Time for dinner. Whew, time flies fast

up to now, graphics look good, and I got a dummy sprite jumping

mmmmmmhhhhh, Nürnberger Rostbratwürstchen (mini bratwurst)

Next Update

Wrooooommmmm

my body is getting tired. giving up on me… :O

let’s see if a power nap helps

6 in the mornin update

been awake for 2 hours now, got an obstacle in the game. also, it will be the only obstacle as i noticed the game was getting hard

Update post!

Still a lot to do, most menu’s are done. Sound missing, Serverside missing, NPCs still TODO :O

And it’s >GAMETIME<

meaning, I’m done. Not with the game, but I can’t keep going anymore :/. It’s still playable though. Tired. Unconvinced. Game over. Finito. The last 4 hours I was having bugs over and over again, and then Google App Engine keeps kicking me in the nuts for errors

Anyhow, …*uploading*…

Obligatory post mortem post + timelapse

*insert lots of ranting like I did the LDs before :D*

*insert link to my own game*

*insert congrats to 10 years LD like “CONGRATULATIONS TO 10 YEARS OF LUDUM DARE!!!”*

TL;DR

Used: Flixel, FlashBuilder, Paint.NET, GraphicsGale, Google App Engine, Eclipse, sfxr

Good:

– made a game which connects to a backend server, something I wanted to do in a long time

– played with Google App Engine, something I also wanted to do in a long time

– I made a generic jumping game, also something I wanted to do as a case study. also, I don’t move the cars and I don’t move any camera, I just move the world 😀 (like the spaceship in Futurama does)

Bad:

– I was hoping for survival, but meh

– I’m not scared to look into library code, and for this LD, I dived a bit into flixel to get a continuous background animation and some other stuff. Still, I should have done it as warmup, as it took a bit time

– it took way to long to create a servlet with about 100 lines of code. too many bugs and it ate up 4hours

– had to release a bugfix because I was programming in Flash Builder, which deactivates the security sandbox, making the game get stuck. Didn’t realize that until this morning

– I forgot to give the game a name! When I opened the upload form, I had to reopen my mainscreen.png and add a name to it

– I don’t feel that the game I made represents my thinking. It’s not funny, and I like funny games :/

Timelapse time!

First MiniLD! Though I had like 4-5 normal LDs

First time participating in a mini LD! Had nothing better to do, and when I was browsing around, checking my RSS, I was like: ‘huh, MiniLD is this weekend? Aspect? Sounds interesting! I’ll take 1024 x 128.” I wanted to create some minigames with my Chicken character anyway, so why not? It was a bit of a shock though to see for the first time, that 1024 x 128 was in fact wider than I thought it would be ;). Nice choosing of the theme!

It’s a tribute to Kirby’s adventure , NES 😉

So here you go, play it here

LD24

As long as nothing happens, I’m in as well

it’s that time of the year again! i was already getting annoyed with myself, spending weekends doing nothing productive ^^

Weapons of Choice:
– AS3/Flash
– IDE: FlashBuilder
– Lib: maybe Flixel, maybe FlashPunk (if I can find the time to check it out), maybe an iso-lib
– Sounds: sfxr, and/or a simple microphone

– additional challenge: adding cats, uploading it to any market and making at least a dollar (after-compo) ^^

Can’t wait can’t wait!!!

I’m really excited for the LD! and even though the warmup-weekend is yet to come, on Monday I ported my last MiniLD-Entry to PlayBook (and hopefully it also works on BB10). It’s free! and if you’re good enough, playing it only takes a minute of your life 😉

Game is evolving!

First crummy picture of game!

Yeah, not that much….

Anyhow, picture of food!

Has to be sufficient for the weekend, I don’t plan to leave where I am right now. Should I run out, I guess I gotta go to the next McDonalds ^^

Meow!

I guess I’m not the only one making kittens…

Status update (end of day one)

Sometimes I think I’m just nuts….or I just need sleep

I’d love to make a gif, but I don’t know how to from Flash Builder 😀

Tired but still not done

Still a lot to do, a big batch of graphics, a bit logic, no sounds yet, no music yet. Whew, and I’ve been debugging for like 4 hours in this LD, haven’t been doing that in a long time oO
