LD14

Yayyy! Hello folks!

Hey there, and greetings to all of you!

This’ll also be my first time joining LD. Quite a few people I know have been participating in LD, and this time, I’ll see what I can manage to do as well!

What I’ll be using (most probably):

– Eclipse with a Ruby plugin, so I’ll code in Ruby

– Flash, Photoshop and/or Paint + my tablet for graphics

– and Gosu (cause Gosu + Ruby is great!)

Have fun people

Monster Wall (or better: wall of monsters) approaching!

When I heard about the theme, this was the picture that got in my head (or at least something like lava where you have to escape). Doing good so far (still having to calibrate, as the monsters are still too strong right now :D)

monster wall

getting up again….slowly

that’s how it is: if you decide to code on the last day without sleep and get to bed early the day before, then  it is no wonder if you feel like crap after getting up early if you normally don’t.

I still have to travel, since i’m visiting my parents

I need coffee. now 😛

[Final] Defend your castle

This is the final version of my game, ‘Defend your castle’ (I know, not the very best title in the world) against a lot of monsters, which represent the wall of doom. Well, can you manage to survive until the very last level? Use missiles to kill the monsters and walls to repel them. Or use the hammer guys (but those are expensive, at least at the beginning). Don’t forget to upgrade your units, and squeeze the money out of your civilians, providing you have some

Ten levels for you to play. I forgot to make an intro as well as to make credits.

*edit*I should have made at least one picture for explanations. Sorry. So:

Missiles are $100, Walls $500 and Soldiers $1000 (kinda hard to see)

You can raise the tax to get more money, but that cuts down your peoples growth.

You need a few people, should you really get to the last level, since money isn’t everything

The monsters will kill your population if they reach the castle

Soldiers only walk on their path

This game is mouse control only

BTW, the rainbulb can’t be beaten by soldiers or missiles, so you have to go with the last defense that you got; and there are monsters which will just walk over your barriers

Stupid by me: i should have limited the number of walls, since it’s O(n) in calculations

Have fun!

I guess I’m in

Damn it, jlnr 😀

I guess I’m in this time as well. Actually didn’t plan to, because I had stuff to do, and tomorrow there’ll be a party, but jlnr managed to hypnotoad me or something, and now I’m too pumped up for programming that I won’t be able to stop. Party with darkened eyes, woohoo!

IMG_0766IMG_0767

First pics and first foodstuffs. Japan is quite convenient with its bentou, though the boxes themselves are a waste of resources. I also wanted to make a timelapse, but the camera of the MacBookPro isn’t working. Hmm. What now…

Jlnr! When I meet you the next time, I’ll get a giant hammer and smash you into 2D! ^^

Have fun, everyone!

Status update

taking a break for food! Unfortunately I bought noodles with octopus, and I hate those. Getting out, buy something else, losing time? hahaha no way

IMG_0768

Left computer is only for entertainment (a megaman vid), and on the right one you see a first draft. only gonna get better 😀

have fun, everyone!

Update

Tired. Sleep deprived because I had to get up early in the morning (was other stuff). Hands. shaking. Fooooooood. Spent too much time for the shitty background. Meh

IMG_0769

Food: rice + beef. Keeps stomach full

running the last meters…

just got back from hanging out with friends, and now I’m pumped for the last few meters till the finish line! The game is basically done, all that’s missing is the most important part: the fun :D. because right now, there’s just a god mode, and no attacking enemies. well, 11 hours to go!

Also missing is the sound, but that’s a more minor thing compared to the attacking enemies

IMG_0770

haha, and that’s the food for the last hours. i consider myself happy having a 24h McD right around the corner 😀

So, at all, have fun and good luck for finishing the games!

real screenshot this time

Just finishing enemies right now, which means there will be even time for some sounds. Weeee!

DAYYUUUUUUUM

Spacexplorer: Post-mortem

Pro:

– Even though I wasn’t planning to take part, I still did and don’t regret it

– Managed to create a new game!

– LD is always kinda fun, and coding with Gosu is allowing to code in Ruby very fast

– Created a shooting game with a lot of enemy fire. And the flower effects went surprisingly well

– very happy that the radar worked correctly!

rubyw 2009-12-15 12-44-28-71

Contra:

– when I was creating sound effects, they didn’t sound right and I took them out again. That was lost time. should have made bgm instead

– shouldn’t have made the enemies’ movement “random” :D. So some of them are having flowers, others don’t

– i know, the shootings are kinda crazy, but they aren’t crazy enough! ^^ should have been MUCH more

– i didn’t wanted to use wingdings as enemies, but, you know, no time and such. i also wanted to have them animated, but that would have taken even more time

– there’s a big performance problem if you get to the end. Reminder for myself: don’t make the collision calculations in the laser shots if you create around 360 every second, lasting for at least 10 seconds each

– i also wanted to add a possibility to move left and right, but having the calculations in euclidic dimensions crashed my brain at hour 42 😀

So, this LD was a nice experience again! To all alpha-testers and fellow programmers: have fun!

Ooh, lots of bullets. Will have to remember to try this one.

Important question

I have the following question: unfortunately I used Wingdings as enemy graphics, and those are not allowed in the rules. I didn’t know about that, but that also means that I disqualified myself.

Question: is it still ok to change the graphics now? I don’t want to be a spoilsport, so I have these to offer, intentionally making them worse to indicate that

Old graphics

Old graphics

enemies

new graphics

So do you think this is ok? Elsewise I will take back my entry by also deleting the links

You’ve made the new graphics super bad so people will just say to stick with the old ones 😛 well, i dont know what the rules are on that; this is my first LD. But if i find out i’ll be sure to let you know.
15. Dec 2009 · 08:27 UTC
I guess technically that wasn’t allowed but I don’t really see a big problem here. I think the rule is there to avoid some real problems with fonts that contain very detailed graphics. Anyway that’s just my opinion.

Making the graphics worse was really intentional. Mea culpa, mea culpa, and if I would make the graphics better, that would be even worse than having the wingdings :).
15. Dec 2009 · 09:34 UTC
My vote: definitely keep your entry in, and it doesn’t bother me if you stick with the old graphics.
15. Dec 2009 · 10:01 UTC
My take:
15. Dec 2009 · 10:03 UTC
Oh, by the way, yes, there’s a bit on the wiki saying roguelikes are allowed, but I think that’s inconsistent with the idea of not using “found art” in font form. Better to broaden the scope a bit. In any case, you still can’t use public-domain fonts (since they would count as public-domain art) which aren’t on the target system already, so I think it’s not too exploitable to allow wingdings.

^^Good thing i made my own font 😛

thank you for your many comments. so at least for now, I have the version with the changed graphics as an .app available as well

For me it’s ok to change the gfx the way YOU like 8)

IMHO we are here to enjoy and have fun!!
15. Dec 2009 · 14:17 UTC
Dude, I didn’t know it’s not allowed to use any font from the OS. I mean… it’s a font. You can’t expect to draw a font in 48 hours manually.
Maple
15. Dec 2009 · 14:34 UTC
Meh. Well im not claiming to have done it within the 48hours (although it DID only take about 10 mins to do the characters i used while i was making the font) but i’m just saying no-one can say i didnt make my own font 😀
15. Dec 2009 · 16:41 UTC
KungPhoo: the rules call out the fonts with graphics in them specifically,

“Fonts are allowed. You’re free to use any font you’re legally entitled to. Fonts are meant for text output, not as base for graphics (so you can’t get around the ‘no clipart’ part by using windings/webdings/dingbats and whatnot). ”

So it’s not that all fonts from the OS are disallowed.
15. Dec 2009 · 17:27 UTC
I wouldn’t worry about it, and I’d think changing it now is worse than leaving it. But don’t use wingdings in the future! Seems like a pretty minor thing since wingdings isn’t exactly high art, not much better than the classic roguelike of just using letters.
15. Dec 2009 · 20:44 UTC
I personally think it’s inconsistent to disallow public-domain clipart and allow public-domain fonts, but *shrug* if it works for people, it’s cool. I actually was quite careful to only use fonts from the OS for that reason.

10 am here and ready to go

Heya folks! Time for LD again I guess. Grabbed my stuff, emptied my fridge and went to university to work overnight cause there’s no way I could work at home. The theme is islands? So I’m gonna (try to) go with:

– Gosu and Ruby for programming

– Photoshop and my tablet for graphics

– Trying to make a timelapse with photobooth and a screencast with chronolapse

– For sounds, sfxr and gonna try LMMS

Here’s a pic of the current workspace

Foto 1

And I’m a really smart guy. Packed food, but forgot my toothbrush and stuff. Yay, gonna be happy tomorrow when my breath will hinder me at programming.

Have fun everyone!

Spritesheet!

well, no real progress over here. at least i got this funny spritesheet to show

nicely done

Timelapse of drawing chicken!

Here you go with a screencast. Also wanted to do a real timelapse, but my second computer didn’t want to take pics of me over time :(

iQueens for iPhone

Granted, this took a while, and the respective challenges are also over already, we still wanted to share this with you: We submitted a game to the app store, and after 10 long days of wait it has passed Apple criteria. YAY!

So we present you: iQueens for iPhone!

It’s a puzzle game based on chess figures. There are three modes to choose from. A puzzle of the first mode is shown here:

mzl.nuilwjqb.320x480-75

In this (very simple) tutorial level you have to place 2 Queens on the board so that every single field is attacked. In later levels of this mode fields get more complex and you will have a different set of figures.

The second mode is commonly known as the 8 queens puzzle, where you don’t try to control the board, but try to set figures so that they do NOT attack each other. This mode will be included in the first update which we already submitted, but have to wait for (again) due to Apple’s policies.

The third mode is known as the Knight’s Tour. Will be included at the start of the next year.

So if you want to give it a try, it’s being offered for 99cents in the app store. Have fun!

uahhh. just got up

i guess i’m in. woke up at 4am to check the theme and went straight back to bed, hoping for ideas in my dreams ^^.

let’s get started!

Breakfast, but no ideas yet

Scrambled eggs for breakfast, but still no good ideas. Had one idea about a kid sent to bed by its mother, but after the lights go out, the kid discovers the house at night. Platformer. Silhouettes only, one-color background, only eyes of protagonist and enemies visible. End boss: silhouette of mother, looking more like a tyranno, but if the boss has been beaten, the light turn on again the kid is sent to bed again.

It’s too much work and I don’t think I’d be able to code a working final boss from scratch with the framework I wanna work with. For the next LD I guess I’m gonna re-learn using flash 😛

Nice idea. But really much work to get it done in a fun way. These eggs are too liquid…
pythong
18. Dec 2010 · 09:04 UTC
hehehe, ok, it’s rather a mixture of scrambled and not-so-sunny side up ^^

30 hours left

A bit more than 30 hours left and nothing to show exept the image above. Idea: finished. What I want as intro/tutorial: finished. What else do I have? Crappy psd-files and about 15% of the code. No music and no sounds yet.

Gotta pull an all-nighter!

hadn’t thought i could do it

i was actually kinda discouraged yesterday evening, having only less than 20 % of the planned code and hardly anything else. so i decided to stay awake and started doodling…and here’s the ingame result! (without bgr of course). having this even made me continue coding, and that’s a nice feeling you get when you see stuff work :)

Yeah, for motivational reasons, it’s important to get something on the screen that you can see, even if there isn’t much code functionality yet. I’ve found it also helps me visualize where I’m going with the code.

Ancient Discoveries: Postmortem

So there it was again, LudumDare. I shouldn’t have been working at the same time, as there were lots of distractions, and I should get together with other people again to have more motivation 😛

At first, the theme seemed to me like a revival of ‘Exploration’, LD 16. A peek to wikipedia showed me that ‘Discovery’ can be taken as that, but also as ‘to discover something new, not in the sense of exploring’. So I really tried to do that, not going into the direction of exploring (large areas) at all.

the idea came fast. it’s similar to a minigame that you can find in Pokemon Pearl/Diamond, where I spend hours running around. Then the rest was coding and a lot of drawing.

Coding is luckily not the problem. Ruby is very fast to write, Gosu nice to use, and the rest is up to me. No time -> hardcode. There actually is hardly any code, about 600 lines and that’s it. But the drawings ate up a lot of time. I also didn’t managed to do all the drawings. I wanted to have more, to animate everything slightly, and (of course) I also wanted to colour everything. Especially the win/lose-screens lack text, colour and animation. I probably could have done it with a bit more time

So that was it again! let’s have a nice time judging and playing around!
