Alright everyone! I've been streaming people's games for almost a week now and I wanted to share the games I thought best exemplified each category. I'm trying to show some real ### Hidden Jems though some you may have heard of before. :)

Overall Best Game

ShootEm? By @merrol

shootemGIF.gif

Which is a completely regular unremarkable SINGLE PLAYER game that absolutely won't net you +1 true friend. :) I also made some fanart for it because I loved it so much! ShootemFanart.png

You can play it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/shootem

SERIOUSLY I CAN'T RECCOMMEND IT ENOUGH.

Fun Category Pick

Dark Soil By @zguerrero & @pietro-ferrantelli

dark soil.gif This was a very tough category to pick for, so I tried to think about the games that drew me back in for a second go after streaming, and those which offered the most variety and wonder. Dark Soil definitely provided those things, with an addictive leveling system and a difficulty curve controlled by the player themselves so it only ramps up the challenge when you're ready for it. If you want to dedicate the next hour to an LD Jem this is the game for you!

Play it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/dark-soil

Innovation Category Pick

Definition of a Gheust By @zephyrraine @sam-machell & @sand-gardeners

gheust.png I was really struggling over whether to give this one the Mood or Innovation category win, because it's exemplary in both. This game combines the experiences of playing a videogame with the experience of watching a movie, with two simultaneous situations that ended up giving me goosebumps from the eerie juxtaposition. Definitely an experience.

Theme Category Pick

Honest Dan's Trout By @honest-dan

honest dan.png As engaging as it is frustrating! This entry takes the cake for two TRULY incompatible genres, because one is literally constantly screwing over your progress in the other haha. The unholy love-child of Tetris and Breakout where you're challenge is to get a Trout, which means dissolving 4 lines of tetris simultaneously with the 4-square piece... Good luck!

Play it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/honest-dans-trout

Graphics Category Pick

Portaboy By @enchaec @lumpy & @puke7

portaboy.png Truly beautiful as well as being very very fun to play. Strong WarioWare feels here in a game that constantly keeps you on your toes, though I found myself often so entranced by the incredible pixel art that I would get distracted and lose haha. Captures the feeling of 80's arcade games wrapped in modern polish.

Play it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/portaboy

Audio Category Pick

Elite Beat Zombygons By @archimagus @dangerousfat @dacri & @johnryanaudio

elite beat.png A shooting game you play to the rhythm the most polished, intense, exciting soundtrack I've seen yet in the Jam. In fact, they plan to release the soundtrack by popular request for free download later this week so check that out if you want. The gameplay, which rewards you for multitasking, accentuates the wicked metal and techno mix of heart-pounding music. A must-play.

Play it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/elite-beat-zombygons

Humor Category Win

Jeff from Accounting By @almax @hi-im-greg & @dale-smith

jeff from accounting.png I'm sure you guys have seen/heard of this one before, but I honestly couldn't pick any other haha. With enough dry humor to be a Valve game, it's also very well polished. 10/10 would get killed by a chair again.

Mood Category Pick

The Place By @krp

the place.gif

I'm not usually a fan of horror games, but this one combines it with engaging action, thoughtful puzzles and a dark world I wanted to know more about. Doesn't rely on jump scares but isn't above using them. ;P If you want some quiet, eldrich horror in your life this game is for you. Music is also on-point.

Guys I can't even express my gratitude for all your glowing reviews. Thank you all so much! Josh and I worked very hard on crafting a soothing, zen experience that people would enjoy playing with loved ones (or alone!).

Wow. I'm actually so thunderstruck by this haha.

On The Fly Art Post-Mortem

GIF_SlowOptim.gif Just wanted to make a post-mortem to maybe help others looking for art direction in future projects.

For our game On The Fly we ended up winning 1st Place in the graphics category as well as reaching 474 downloads on itch.io as of the time of this post! Wow! I did the art @Flightyfelon and my friend Josh @qkjosh did the programming and sound effects.

Getting Inspired

For us, after hearing the theme we set out to create our Game Pillars. We decided that we wanted to create a chill game about birds going down a river, with noodle necks inspired by wild birds striking silly poses.

shwoop.png

We also wanted the two incompatible themes we chose to support these feelings in some way so we came up with Endless Runner and Dating Sim, to support our game's Two Pillars:

1 - Relaxation/Zen

2 - Noodle Neck Physics

And thus we got started on prototyping! As Josh prototyped the gameplay, I began prototyping the art. Starting with a Keyframe.

Keyshot.png Sketching something out is CRUCIAL. Because until you do you have no idea how the idea in your mind will play out. Also, you can now actually direct the rest of your team towards your vision.

For example: perspective changes.png Because of the keyframe we were able to fine-tune the perspective of the camera and world early-on.

Working Through it.

As Josh moved ahead with making the birds move side-to-side we kept passing the project back and forth with Unity's Collab functionality, making sure that at each step it was getting more fun to play and always staying true to our established pillars.

I started with the most important part of the game: The Characters. Trying to make sure they read very clearly from front and back since they'd be viewed from both sides. Actually, people found that the sparrow did not read well at all from the back and thought she looked like a girl with pigtails. Because of this, they were confused about the game's mechanics and didn't try to use the game's swap-birds function. See how important silhouette is?

Gif_CrowRig.gif

Anyways, once we'd gotten the basic functionality down we could start polishing. This was around the middle of the second day and involved a lot of plants and insects and a very nerve-wracking function for Josh called the BugGenerator(); Yikes haha!

Around here we also mocked out the dialogue system. This was a time where a lot of ideas came and went. The important thing was to keep comparing the ideas to the game pillars and the keyframe.

For example, late into the jam we realized we would only have time for the dialogue system OR an end-state. We decided to not have an end-state because:

A) It would be against our first pillar of Zen/Relaxation

B) It would take away from the themes we'd set out with by making our endless runner less endless and also because the dialogue system was central to our dating sim section.

In a perfect world, we'd love to have had time for both. But we didn't. I think we made the right decision.

showable_micro.gif So now things are in place! Magnefique! Now let's look at polish.

Polish

lighting guide.png Once the main art had wrapped up and Josh was chugging through finishing the dialogue system, I wanted to fine-tune the environment and simulate the passage of time by creating a day-night cycle. Together we were able to polish everything from the lighting to the textures to the little ripples the kettle left behing in the water.

At this point everything was pretty much done!

I saw a snail.jpg

All that was left was UI and making sure the animations for the birds and bugs didn't break too too often. ;P

In Conclusion

Are there things we could have added? Definitely. It would have been great to have a completely finished game that had integrated the endless runner and dating sim mechanics more fully. Or had the bird's answers to the questions create a more noticeable effect on their relationship and change over time. But oh well. I'm very happy with how the whole game turned out and Josh is too. Hopefully one or both of us can make it back for the next jam and create a whole new adventure! ^_^ Hope this was a bit helpful!

WIP main character!

ArmorConcepts.pngWIP_ArmorSculpt.png

Hey everyone!

Back for Jam #2 with a bigger team this time! We've decided to try something interesting with a sort of Reverse-Metroidvania where you start with many power ups and end up with none ;P Let me know what you think of our main character so far!

Hey guys, I'll try your game if you try mine?

Promo_TryOurGame.png

I'm alive again after sleeping for a day and it's time to rate some games!

So! I'd like to make a deal with you guys. If you're interested, post your game in a comment on this post and I will play it and leave you some feedback.

I ask that in return for me playing your game, you give my game a try and a rating!

Obviously I have no way to know if you actually played my game but I hope you'll give it a shot ^_^

TrimmedPromoGIF.gif

It's a game about a Janitor who cleans up after the Player in a MetroidVania-style game. You need to put the power-ups back in their places in order to win! ArmorConcepts.png

Okay, send your games in the Comments, here's mine!
