LD34

Hi, We’re in! (The jam, not the compo) (the compo is scary)

We’re a new game development team, mostly made up by college students or recent graduates.

We are 3 programmers and 2 artists, and we’ll try to make something playable in our very first Game Jam!

Our tools will moslty be Unity3D (actually 2D), Visual Studio, Sublime Text and Git for programming, and Photoshop and PaintTool Sai for the graphics, and sfxr for the effects.

Good luck to everybody!!

The compo is horrifying, best of luck in the jam!

Useless concept things (but we know what to do now!)

Hi! we spent a lot of time thinking about our first game, so many possibilities burning in our heads.
I’m Nayla Novotny, one of the artists of RedBricks and my ideas were kind of… weird, i think? I like weird, gore, disturbing and sinister games like “The Cat Lady” or “Dreaming Mary”, so sorry people who are not sick and want cute and innocent games x__x .

Soo.. I thought about the player being a little girl who wants to eat another kids avoiding old people.

Now we have another idea (less creepy, but I think it can be  nice to play and beautiful).

Dat Raycast

(Borja, Programmer)

I’m learning a heck of a lot of stuff in this LD, and we might actually get something done! GG everyone.

A new Artist Appeared!!

We are happy to announce that a new Artist has been added to our  team. His nae is Cinvira, He’ll be making the music, and he’s awesome.

Please welcome!!

Levels Loaded!

Hi, Borja Here!

Afte rmuch fiddling with ways of importing Tiled maps into Unity, I have finally settled into a custon CSV Importer. No nonsense, total control, no drama. Here are the results, incorporating some of Alvaro’s really nice controls and camera.

Source Control is love, Source Control is life

Alvaro here, just wanted to say, I’m really surprised seeing how much git has been putting up with our shenanigans, commit history seems to be pretty clean.

Keep up the good work guys!

Level Formatting finished!

(Borja) Hi!

Yesterday I finished the level parser, and it seems to work just fine! I’m kind of proud of it, so I think I’ll add “Allow player to create levels” to the “If we have time” TODO list.

Here’s a glimpse of the format, let’s see if you can guess the meaning of each cell! (HINT: Originially it was in CSV format).

Learning for Godot

Hello Everyone!

Once again Red Bricks Studio is going to Jam this weekend.

Unfortunately only a part of the team has been able to make it, nevertheless we have 100% the enthusiasm.

This time around we don’t have any artists, so we will have to figure something out in order to make the game look great.

And since we are feeling a bit adventurous we are trying a new engine, so we will be using Godot Engine

We are working to make a nice tiny game, but when you split the tasks nothing seems so tiny

If anyone is interested on the toolbox:

Engine: Godot Engine

Art: Piskel, maybe even will generate random sprites

Sound: Bfxr (Sound Effects) + Bosca Ceoil (Music)

Source Control: Git (Hosted on Github)

Task tracking: Trello

Operative System: Elementary OS + Windows 10

We will post some gifs soons, so stay tuned!

I am in the same page just installed godot.. downloading video tutorials.. I moved from libgdx since they stopped support for ios atleast for now, so thought of giving a try to this…

Party Like it’s 2078… or maybe catch some rest

Pheewww, Ludum Dare is over.

It has been a ride, for neither of us was the first jam, but sure it was the hardest. Now having recovered some sleep we would like to chat a bit about how this whole ordeal went.

The good

=======

From the beginning we decided to learn Godot for this Jam, and it was nice. It was a different paradigm to what we were used to (Unity), but after struggling for the first day and a half the rest was much quicker than what we expected.

We made a game! Maybe not out best entry ever, but we covered pretty much all the mechanics we wanted to have.

The bad

======

Godot HTML5 export failed us at the last minute, we had in mind since the beginning embedding it on the web, but unfortunately Godot input fails a lot on HTML5, and seems like something that won’t be fixed soon.

We lacked polish and failed on making the game intuitive, but having a team size so reduced (We used to be 5+ people and this time we were only 2), having participating in a few game jams you tend to notice the pattern: The most polished and shiny games tend to get the most attention.

The ugly

======

We tried to have a complex dialog system, buut it turns out ou can export arrays/Dictionaries to the editor, well sometimes you have to hardcode and write some hacky code, that’s the way things are.

Anyway, that’s enough for now, in balance it has been an amazing learning experience and we had so much fun doing it, we will be back on the next Ludum Dare (Please I hope the theme is One Giant Enemy, got so much ideas)

Bye !
