Ludum Dare 45

'ello LD world!

I guess I'll make a post too? Being social, yech. :smile_cat:

First time joining, I'm a programmer, played around with pygame in recent months. Not yet sure if I'll get anything playable out of this, but I'll give it a shot! I also have some other stuff coming up on the weekend, so we'll see. Plus I decided I'm doing a bit of Inktober stuff here and there, not sure that'll be part of my game though.

I think I otter look up some tools that get mentioned a lot 'round here, for sprites and sfx and the lot?

Looking forward to working alongside everyone else, especially the other newbies who got no idea what we're getting ourselves into. :penguin:

Big oof

For the past few hours I've been feeling like I'm getting sick, gonna be feeling a bit under the weather 'm afraid. Hopefully I'll be feeling fine again tomorrow? (N.B.: I also have a habit of getting a bit whiny when I get sick, so thanks for giving me your precious attention. I'm sure it has some placebo effect!)

Been sitting here getting my little code base of boilerplate functionality in order, like I imagine a lot of people are. Maybe I should boilerplate m'self some tea! :tea::grinning:

I've also been jamming out to Tiny Desk Concerts all evening, trying to keep the ones I know are great for later. I've already come across some really nice new tunes to jam up my ears, as one is prone to when listening to these.

Two hours have passed...

...and all I got so far is a semi-robust system for handling menu screens. Solid.

I haven't even put a single thought into the theme. :scream_cat:

But that shall have to wait until I get some good rest. Hopefully dreaming of nothing in particular.

Progress?

It's 4 am in the morning, and so far I have...

  • a two frame main character walk-cycle
  • a real convoluted menu system that can nest menus and ask "Really exit?" where I want it to. Hopefully. It might also break on me.
  • an animation system that can load arbitrary amounts of consecutive frames from a spritesheet, based on json data. Which makes it fairly easy to cobble together animations with Piskel hopefully.
  • ...looked at Tiled and need to write code to load tilesheets that work with its json maps and load those. And then render those. Yep.

Maybe next week I'll have a game! But really tho, I've been having a lot of fun, even if I'm rewriting very basic game engine stuff within pygame. Motivation! \o/

My code lives at https://git.redflames.space/rf/pygame-ld45. There's some opengameart stuff in there that I dunno if I need to credit it still, which is another TODO item :v

Thanks for being motivating and inspiring!

I just want to thank everyone, even if I didn't manage to get anything ready to submit. ❤️

It's been great seeing all the different ideas and art styles and updates over the course of the weekend. I already follow over 30 people now whose submissions I plan to try, and hopefully I'll get around to others too!

I did spend quite a bit of (night) time on my own project, mostly implementing out-of-scope (for a weekend anyway) menu systems, animation and tilesheet loading, processing and rendering. PNGs were stitched together and JSONs dumped all over the place.

And I still plan on continuing with some version of the idea I had originally! I hope the lot of you will too! Keep it going! 😄
