LD32

First time Ludum Dare

I’m not looking to do anything fancy, just get through this comfortably with more than enough time to submit a small and mostly finished game.

Tools that I’ll be using:

Engine: Game maker Studio or Game maker 7 (depending on how hipster I’m feeling)

Graphics: Photoshop, Game maker sprite editor

Sound effects: BFXR

Music: Fake Music Generator, Studio One (student version) for editing.

Best of luck to everyone!

Making great progress for my first LD Jam

For the theme, I thought what is more unconventional than a weapon that has as much of a chance at killing you as it does the enemies? And then it hit me… GIANT SPIKY BALL OF DEATH!!!

LD32

Its my fist time using physics in Game Maker so things are still a little buggy but I got the “Ball of Death” working so I got that going for me.

Things I want to add:

Power ups to make the chain shorter or longer

Enemy AI (Some will run at you, others may try to dodge the “Ball of Death”)

Sound effects

Music

A bigger map

A scoring system

Title screen

Game over

The blood splatter effect I got from the amazing Zack Bell, his tutorial can be found here:

Looking for testers and feedback – Giant Spiky Ball of Death

GSBOD

First off, let me say. I am working on a difficulty curve. And yes enemies will spawn right next to you so please mind the frustrating cheep shots.

SPACEBAR will reset the game.

This is a windows only game sorry

Thank you all who play, test and provide feedback :)

My first Ludum Dare and what went well

My first Ludum Dare was a great experience and although I got a little side tracked on day 2 I ended up completing my game with just over half an hour remaining for the competition.

The LD Compo started Saturday at 1pm for me in New Zealand and finish Monday at the same time of course…

SO what is the most unconventional weapon? Obviously something that can easily kill you as much as it kills the enemies! And that was my initial thought, GIANT SPIKY BALL OF DEATH!

What I wanted to add:

– Title screen (sorta did that)

– Game over screen (Check)

– Main mechanic (Duh!)

– Variation of enemies (Check)

– Some sort of score system (Did a timer)

– Tweet high score (Chose not to in the end)

– Difficulty curve (I sure hope so, spent a long time trying to make it work!)

– Music and sound effects (Sound effects im happy, but the music is average)

What went well?

– Have you see the list? I kept it simple

– I planned EVERYTHING then TRIED to made a simple attempt on the first night

– I talked with friends and got some other people online to test my game

– I planned to end 3 hours early, this is a big one as I ended up going about 2 and a half hours over the time I aimed for!

So I think my first Ludum Dare went very well, and i am proud of what I produced in a short amount of time and had one hell of a good time!

Progress on my post LD game, need more suggestions

Giant Spiky Ball of Death updates:

  • Much better controls
  • Added arrow key support
  • NEW ENEMY (splits into five smaller enemies, see below)
  • Removed main background (it caused my gifs to go up in file size by 20mb…)
  • Order change of waves (Bigger enemy comes before the shooting one)
  • Fixed being able to outrun the chain

To be added in the near future:

  • Controller support
  • Enemy kills counter after death
  • Post score to twitter?
  • HTML 5 version (Will be saving up in the far future)

I NEED MORE SUGGESTIONS, pls ^__^

Although I am not aiming to sell my game, I would at least like to see this project reach a more acceptable level of quality. Also as this is now more of a shameless self advertise, I need more people to play the Ludum Dare version of my game and give critical feedback. Below is a gif of a more polished and faster version of my game, but I will say now that the LD version is not too far off from this one. I have not released this newer version yet, as I am in need of more feedback on the original, but I will most likely after the voting has finished.

Post LD version of Giant Spiky Ball of Death

Well honestly I planned to add in a lot of features but I am just burned out and am beginning to hate my own game now. Time to stop and just put out a more well polished version of GSBoD. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed working on this game and I’m proud of what I have done, but it has to end somewhere.

First of all, still on windows, not much I can do with that. Keyboard controls but no controller support as my controller at home is broken so I was unable to test the controls…

Second, the game now runs ONE MILLION TIMES FASTER!!! Well not really but at  least twice as fast, which makes a huge difference.

Play the new version of my game.

and while you are there don’t hesitate to play my LD version for comparison.

*Shameless self promotion (^__^) *

.

I would like to thank everyone who has played, rated my game and left  some very nice and encouraging comments! This was my first Ludum Dare and I will definitely be coming back for next time, rain or shine! Now here are a few gifs of my work in progress from the start of the Ludum Dare to now.

Shameless self promotion

“Although this game may look interesting, the president is uninterested in playing your game.”

– The White House

“Despite what my security advisory told you, I downloaded your game and played it. Now everyone in the White House is trying to beat my score!”

– Barack Obama

Thanks Obama!

If the president of the United States of America liked my game, then so will you! *

*Your opinion is yours to keep, whether you like this game or not is not guaranteed.

2 hours left, and i’m now re-using the same .gif over and over

Just need 8 more votes to reach 100, this would be a great achievement for my first Ludum Dare!

(This is probably the lest effort I have put into a self advertising post…)

But either way, click here to rate my game!

Correction…doesn’t have many ratings as yours* 😛

LD33

I’m half in maybe..?

This might be my second Ludum Dare, cant aim for the top 100 games this time as have “pre-exams” that just HAD to be on now of all times… So I may spend just one day instead of the full time allowed. Or who knows, I may just screw my last exam and do this. We shall see.

Using

  • Engine – Game maker Studio OR Game maker 7 (for the indie feels)
  • Music  – Beepbox (http://www.beepbox.co/) OR Bosca Ceoil
  • Sound effects – BFXR

Good luck to all!

Somewhat finished! – Earthpocalypse

Due to school having exams now, I only had less than 24 hours to throw together this somewhat strategical game.

In this game the world is dying so you gotta speed up the posses by using the earths resources to build a rocket and escape!

Play it here

shameful self promotion

I’m away from my computer this week and only got my phone so I can’t record new gifs of my game Earthpocalypse. So have the same one I posted in 3 other posts. I’ll be playing the games of all those who have commented when I get home at the end of the week.
