Hymenoptera

Whelp - what can i say i probably took on too much for my skill level. But here it is - Hymenoptera.

You are controlling an ant colony in an ant simulator, each ant has needs and can be told to collect certain resources. The catch (to stick with the theme) is that the larger your ant colony grows the more unwieldy it becomes to manage and the resources costs for each, building, upgrade, technology costs a % more based on how many resources you have above the base cost.

A little ambitious you say? well I know! I didn't get very far into it and can only really spawn ants and change their AI brains, but i was a good run and I learned alot. I hope to continue working on it because i think there is some gold in this idea and I just need more time to complete it.

Thanks for playing/rating.

Red Owl Games is in!

Hello All!

Logo_Md.png

This will be my 2nd jam and I hope to make something actually playable this time. LD40 i got bogged down learning things and into the weeds and realized i wasn't as prepared to make a game as i needed to be. Since then I've spent the past months developing my tools and skills and I look forward to making something worth your playtime!

Unity, Photoshop, Nanoloop, iPad and lots of caffeine are my weapons of choice.

Good luck to everyone!

LD 44 Postmortem - Operation Cartwheel

Hey All,

Rocktavious from Red Owl Games here - We had a fun LD44, didn't get as much done with our game as we would have liked (and we had travel plans post LD and then the whole family got sick so we didn't get much time to play other LD games) but it was a huge learning experience for us as a team. Since LD44 finished up we've been looking at what's next for Red Owl Games and we've finally decided on a direction.

We posted in a subreddit /r/gameideas looking for a coop game idea from the community. I'm here today to let you know we've chosen an idea and you can read more about it in our blog post https://redowlgames.com/blog/project-three and join our discord https://discord.gg/7TKhQXg to chat and eventually help us beta test it!

The game idea is (drum-roll please): "A Defender-style side-scrolling shmup, but the top half of the screen is the sky and the bottom half is underwater. One player flies a plane up top, the other pilots a submarine on the bottom."

Tentative Title: Operation Cartwheel

Time Frame: Approximately five months

Working Cycles: 2-3 two week sprints per cycle, for a total of about 4 cycles

Start Date: May 12, 2019

End Date: September 30, 2019

Cheers!

ChatGPT Has Changed Creativity

My Prompt (after some previous prompts around themeing and goals and such):

Can you design 5 weapons with unique uses in this theme too?

It responded with:

``` Sure! Here are five potential weapons with unique uses that you could use in your dungeon crawler game:
"Venomous Dagger": This weapon is coated in a deadly poison that damages enemies over time.
"Frostbite Mace": This weapon is imbued with icy magic, causing it to freeze enemies on contact.
"Thunderous Spear": This weapon is infused with the power of lightning, causing it to shock enemies on impact.
"Blazing Sword": This weapon is imbued with fiery magic, causing it to set enemies ablaze on contact.
"Ethereal Bow": This weapon fires arrows made of pure energy, which pass through enemies and can damage multiple foes with a single shot. ```
... astonishing ...
It works!!!!
So this game jam i got beat down by WebGL. :cry: We submitted our game on time with a macOS version that had been working during development so in the last hour of the jam we built WebGL because usually if standalone works its works in WebGL. This was our biggest mistake. Unfortunately we had converted alot of our common code to use async/await in Unity and guess what - that doesn't work in WebGL. :face_palm: So on Friday after work I set out on the task of "unconverting" the code to just coroutines so the build would work.
So I'm writing this today to let everyone one - it finally loads in WebGL! :tada:
So please come play "Root Guardian" - A 3D Dungeon Crawler where you harvest the plants to craft better equipment and upgrades. Thank you!
Red Owl Games Is Back & In!
Red Owl Games here, we've missed the last few jams due to personal life conflicts but this Oct we are ready to join! This year I'll be joined by my Son (Just turned 9) and we'll be using a custom built engine I work on in my spare time. The engine is written in C# using Raylib-CS (https://github.com/raylib-cs/raylib-cs) and an ECS (https://github.com/genaray/Arch). If we need physics we'll integrate Bepu with our ECS (https://github.com/bepu/bepuphysics2) though i'd really love to add Jolt (https://github.com/amerkoleci/JoltPhysicsSharp) and everything else has been hand built through trial and error making other jam games.
We look forward to all the cool games everyone makes and hope you look forward to ours!
Here are our theme suggestions: Screenshot 2025-09-21 at 7.16.00 PM.png
Here is the standard splash screen we use if anyone else wants to use it! LD_Splash.png
Probably behind schedule but we got physics working in the browser!
The game my son (9 yr) and I are working on is going to involve a vulture and bones and collection ... HA!
We are definitely behind in terms of where I wanted to be but i needed to post to celebrate a huge win that we finally got physics working in our game which using a custom built engine (https://github.com/raylib-cs/raylib-cs, https://github.com/genaray/Arch.Extended and https://github.com/bepu/bepuphysics2)
I had a hard rule that the game needed to compile to WASM (so it can be played in the browser to increase the amount of people that can play it and while its been a hard road i've slowly but surely been able to add system after system and got a full WASM based build to work!!!
Here is a screenshot of it running in a browser where you can see the physics shapes. So much effort but i'm so proud of myself!
