LD 38

I did it!

As a programmer with some design and 3d modeling skills, and I'm very happy to finish my first LD!

A special thanks to Henrique Cardoso, from Cafofo Estúdio, who made all original music and SFX for the game!

LD 41

End of the first night

While some people are waking up, I'm going to sleep.

I think I did a lot today, mainly at the scenario.

It was difficult to get an idea at first, but I think i got something interesting.

Confessional

Making progress!

My idea for the jam is to combine first person camera with third person controllers, so you control both the enemy and the victmin. What do you guys think about it?

Bag Man wants to play your game!

Tomorrow is holiday here and Bag Man want to spend his free time playing some LD games. Can you help me select some games to play?

And if you are looking for some cool game to play, take a chance to "CONFESSIONAL", where you play as the psycho Bag Man and have to "save" her victim. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/confessional

Post Mortem of CONFESSIONAL - Part 1

Hi guys, my name is Rodrigo Denúbila and I'm the developer of CONFESSIONAL.

First of all, let me talk a bit of me. I'm 30 years old, live in Brazil, and work as web designer and programmer. Since I was a teenager, I like to create games but I never did this for living.

Well, when the theme was revealed, it was a shock, I hated it at first. I tried to think in something but nothing came to mind. One of the ideas I had was a turn based soccer match, but after some research I found this idea is not so innovative.

After while I went to a folder where I write all ideas I have and found this idea of a "second person game", and I realized that fits on the theme. The original idea has a longer story, and also has another character on the game, but I had to cut a lot of things to finish the game in time. Maybe I'll work more in this game in the future, when I finish my current project.

Well, when I started to work in this game was already 1:00 am in my country (it's 2 hour minus from the LD official hour). The first thing I did is to work on the environment. For this I used Blender, and make a lot of rectangles and cylinders.

2018-05-01em20h51/em25.png

I tried to make a modular environment so, then I had to set up the objects in the scene in Unity 3D.

2018-05-01em20h55/em23.png

For some models, like walls, ground, columns and wood, I used tiled textures to make it's materials. I got these materials in this website: https://share.allegorithmic.com/

texturas.jpg

For the models that needs more detail, I created the material in Substance Painter.

2018-05-01em21h12/em11.png

And after setting up the scene, I configure the pos effect, to reach the visuals I wanted to.

poseffect.jpg

After that, I started to work on the main character of the game, the Bag Man. For that, I created the base mesh with the silhouette I desired in MakeHuman, and then I went to zBrush to make clothes and add details. I put the bag in the head because I think is was faster to model an unique character with it, and this fits with the horror mood of the game.

sculpido.jpg

Then I went back to Blender to create a low poly version of the model, and open UV. And then I went to Substance Painter, where I baked the high poly model in the low poly, and created the materials for this model.

2018-05-01em21h19/em33.png

The victim model is the same as the psycho, but without the apron and the head / bag, and with different colors of the cloth.

And then, I uploaded my models to Mixamo to rigg and get some basic animations to the model.

2018-05-01em21h27/em20.png

I put the model and animations in Unity, but at this time it was already 5am and I was so tired that i went to sleep.

Well, i think this post is too big already, I'll continue it later. See you!

Post Mortem of CONFESSIONAL - Part 2

Hi guys, my name is Rodrigo Denúbila and I'm the developer of CONFESSIONAL.

This is the part 2 of the Post Mortem of CONFESSIONAL. If you doesn't read the 1st part, you can check it out here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/confessional/post-mortem-of-confessional-part-1/

In the first part I ended at 5am of the first night and I was going to sleep. Well, I woke up at 9am in saturday (yeah, just 4 hours of sleep), have a breakfast, and then went back to work.

My characters are already in the scene, but I had to program they. I spend my morning programming the camera and movements of the Bag Man and setting up colliders of the scene.

Until this moment I hadn't a musician in my team, and had no idea how I would do this. Lucky I saw in a Facebook group a post of Luan Moura asking if someone needed a musician for LD. I got in touch with him, told my idea and he liked a lot. He started to work on the music immediately.

Around midday I made a break for lunch. At this point I already had basic controls of the game working. After the lunch I started to work on the models of the torture tools. I modeled at Blender and made textures in Substance Painter.

2018-05-03em10h01/em38.png

After has imported the tools models in Unity, I had to program the actions of pick and drop. For this I created a invisible trigger collider to check if the character is near of the tool. I had two copies of each tool, one parented to the scene and another parented to the character. When the player pick the tool, I hide the tool at the scene and show the tool parented to the character.

Even using Mixamo to animation, I had to adapt some animations to the current tool. For this, I used uMotion, a Unity plugin to create and edit animations.

2018-05-03em10h15/em06.png

Around 7pm Luan send the preview version of the music, and I loved it. It had the perfect mood for the game. I asked him for some sound effects too, like footsteps and hits.

Around 10pm I was so tired and I went to bed and slept until next day. At this moment, I had the full character controller working and idle and walk animations setted up.

2018-05-03em10h19/em10.png

This is the end of the 2nd day of LD and the 2nd part of this post mortem. Soon I'll post the 3rd and last part. See you!

Post Mortem of CONFESSIONAL - Part 3

Hi guys, my name is Rodrigo Denúbila and I'm the developer of CONFESSIONAL.

This is the last part of the Post Mortem of CONFESSIONAL. If you doesn't read the previous part, you can check it out here PART 1 and here PART 2

Well, in previous part I've worked in the tools and basic animations. It was sunday and I woke up around 9 am, had a breakfast and got back to work. I spent most part of the day working in hit animations and putting everything together.

As the previous animations, I've created the hit animations using uMotion and joining everything using the Unity Timeline tool. It was the first time I used this timeline functionality and I found very easy and helpful.

2018-05-08em10h16/em57.png

Animation is where I have more difficult, so I spend a lot of time doing this and didn't reached the level of quality I wanted.

Around 5pm Luan send me the sfx and music that I implemented in the game. At this point I hadn't created the lines, just had a general idea. So I've started to create the line in brazilian portuguese (my first language) and then I had to translate to english. I've used Polyglot to make multiple language support wich is very easy to use and it's free!

Around 8pm the game was almost ready, I've just working in some bug fix and improvements, like Decals, that makes the environment more interesting.

decals.jpg

When I was satisfied with the gameplay, I've worked in the main menu and the loading screen, that took me around 2 hours.

2018-05-08em10h39/em32.png

And finally, the game is ready!

I just have to build and upload to Gamejolt, what took about 1-2 hours. And then I finally could sleep with the feeling of mission accomplished!

What went well

  • I finalized the game, and I'm very satisfied with it!
  • I think I got a really nice graphics and mood in the jam time.
  • I've studied and learned some techniques that i hadn't chance to try before.
  • I could test an idea for a game I had a long time ago, and receive a lot of high quality feedbacks.
  • I really loved the music Luan created for the game, and the mood created by it.

What went wrong

  • Unfortunately I couldn't work as much I wanted in the plot, so the background history is not so deep.
  • Animations was not that good. I really need to study more.
  • Unfortunately I don't know nobody who does voice acting, so I had to work only with subtitles in the game.

Used tools

  • Unity
    • uMotion
    • Polyglot
  • Blender 3D
  • Substance Painter
  • Photoshop

That's all! Thank you for reading, and if you haven’t played Confessional yet, take a chance: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/confessional
