All right, mates. I spent some time in thinking bubble and here's what I've got for you: Selection_730.png

Or the same in copy-pasteable text format: - Dismantle to progress - In a loop - Armor suit is a key feature

Comments would be appreciated! Cheers!

"in a loop" would be a really good game idea

@garlic Thanks for the feedback! And thanks for sharing my POV.

Making GUIs in your game

Hi there, Ludum Dare Mates! LD 46 Event is approaching and I'm just curious, how do you guys build GUIs (or should I call it a HUD? Is there some key difference?) in your game jam submissions? Do you have your own polished pipeline of producing GUIs addressing all player's needs? Maybe you mastered some mature tricks and practices, some principles and life hacks you use.

Below are some examples of various HUDs and GUIs:

  1. Into The Breach. Best seller, definitely. Very intuitive and cool GUI as for me. Not overloaded so much. intoemthe/embreachemgui/em1920x1080.jpg
  2. One of the LD 45 leaders. Game titled "Terra Nil - Reclaim the Wasteland" 267f4.png
  3. My LD44 game. Just few labels, HP bar (hearts row in top left corner of the screen) Selection_768.png

I'm interested in this topic as I'd like to make a game to be clear and user-friendly to player (to the detriment of innovation and originality, perhaps I admit). But I do not have any rich experience, I'm more a tech guy, a coder rather than a game designer or UI/UX designer. So, I'd appreciate any tips or links to the guides and papers related to building GUIs which you found very useful and cool in the context of game development.

What is Mood?

Hi, mates. I don't think I'm a newbie on Ludum Dare Jams but this question still bothers me.

Could you please explain what technically and semantically does this rate category mean? How should I evaluate the game using this scale? Do you have some approaches and your vision on that? Thanks for any replies!

How long can you keep Economic Bubble to be alive?

Would you dare for the risk and rule the market by inflating and deflating this brittle and whimsy bubble? How long can you keep this new Economic Bubble from final fatal burst?

Should I make a Post Mortem blog post?

Not sure that I will manage such project like making a Post Mortem YouTube video about my LD 46 game but global trends and plenty of nice written posts motivate me to share my thoughts and takeaways with this awesome LD community. shot_133.png

Some stats in short summary below:

~ 1500 lines of code (Lua)

~ 25 pure hours of development

~ 3 paper sheets utilized for notes, TODOs, prototypes

1 happy man (me!)

Below is the photo of my workplace at Day 1 of LD 46 right before I started to brainstorm: working_place.jpg

So the question is: to be or not to be?

Rate my theme candidates, comrades

Hey, what do you guys think of these suggestions for the themes selection rounds?

// Or in a more consumable format (text):

  • Guide your enemies
  • In a loop
  • Reloading is a core gameplay

Day 1 Progress Report

Hello, my dear LD mates. Well, I should admit it was very productive starting. I accidentally have closed all planned TODOs on Day 1 (wow!). Boi, really proud of myself.

gameemld/em48emproto/emday_1.gif

Taking into account that I even have found a time to make some daily routine stuff done and what's more I managed to take a quite long break watching hockey of my fav local team (they won those match, hooray!).

Closed TODOs for Day 1:

  1. Submarine, movement script (Done)
  2. Enemies with colliders (Done)
  3. Enemy: plane with AI (Done)
  4. Collectibles (Done)
  5. Collectible generator script (placer) (Done)
  6. Game rules: win when collected all boxes. Lost when lost all hp. (Done)
  7. Game timer (Oxygen) (Done)
  8. Level Manager (Done)
  9. Next Level Dialog (Done)
  10. Game Over Dialog (Done)

Day 2 is devoted mostly for level design and assets crafting, some tweaks, play testing and maybe VFX, Art stuff.

Some drafts and sketches of future levels to implement below: ldem48/emlevel_sketches.jpg

P.S. Salute to one who recognizes Game Engine by dummy asset used for collectibles on the attached *.gif
