2nd Ludum Dare

Hopefully will have an enlightenment when the theme is announced. Drawing blank for most of the final candidates. Won’t probably wait and will start in the morning. Unity3D again, will see what I’ve learned in the past month working on my first game.

Having overslept…

… I think I’m with the boring route and recreate a proven concept – the snake. It fits the theme way too well and might not end up boring as my last entry. And I will still learn a lot :)

Last minute changes…

I have over an hour left, lets add transition from menu to game. In 3D (the game is basically 2d), with Quaternions. Oh well, should have expected this outcome (git reset). Anyway, I’m done, going to prepare builds and get some sleep.

Finally done.

Wow, it took me over an hour to complete all builds, upload them, make screenshots, etc… Thought it will take 10 minutes at most. And of course the WebGL build doesn’t work properly…

Yes, I made a snake as well :)

Made a gameplay video of my submission

Made it for a different reason, but since it’s done, I’ll share it here. It shows the basic elements of the gameplay.

The controls are bad/hard, and it’s a bit slow from the go, but the pace goes up. If you want a little challenge – try scoring over 100 points. It’s quite hard, but definitely doable :)

3 hours IN

Not much progress to show just yet, but I decided on a game at least. It will be 2D, and it will have ants!

Post-competition version

Couldn't sleep (literally), so I added one extra feature which I didn't manage to squeeze in in the 48h period.

screen2.jpg Individual openings on the nest can be opened and closed

This new version is linked in the Updates section of my LD page.

Like insects?

Not many people like insects, but if you don't mind them (on a screen at least), you can give a go one of the many ant games out there, Ant Forts (WebGL build included!).

screen2.jpg screenshot is from a post-compo update if you want to try that one afterwards

I'm also going to plug a game I've played the most (after I've rated it): Zen Demiurgy

It's really a game!

I know this is so last week, but I finally have more comments now!

Metrics

Was the ratio of rated games to ratings always that bad?

ldmetrics.png

Or is it just the new sorting thing being influenced by comments? I didn't comment on about half of the games I've rated.

Throwaway idea

You take a role of someone running an ISP in the US.

internet-traffic-map.jpg (illustrative image, source: tubefilter.com)

You have your control room where you see traffic on a map and you build new connections or upgrade existing ones to meet the demand. You start on a state level, connecting cities, but move on to build connections between different states.

The more traffic you have, the worse it is for you...

Luckily you are good at your job, building effective infrastructure, and hoard up enough of your profits... to buy a senator. Then two, three, half of them. Now you can repeal Net Neutrality and throttle down high traffic users unless they pay more to watch TV, movies, or listen to music. Infinite money to make sure Net Neutrality never happens again!

The more money you have, the worse it is for everyone!

One more dimension

Making my first 3D game, this is where I am after 8 hours.

Who would have thought one donut tutorial wouldn't be enough to master Blender.

Whew, I somehow made it

I decided I would finally make a 3D game. My first one, both for Ludum Dare and ever. My experience with 3D totals one Blender tutorial a year ago (I made a donut).

I spent the whole Saturday modeling and rigging the character, Blender is complicated! And most of Sunday was dedicated to figuring out rotations in Unity, Euler doesn't work!

But by cutting features I somehow managed to finish something resembling a game, and it was totally worth it!

Here it is: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/eight-more-drinks-please

Can't wait to play your games. Well, sleep first...

Still haven't won my own game

I haven't had enough time to balance the game or make complex rules as the Compo was about to end, and the final game is quite hard. Tried it a few times and while I got close I still haven't "won" it.

Made up winning condition is to deliver eight drinks in one "lap". The game will let you play on though, no message or anything.

You can give it a go here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/eight-more-drinks-please

Eight More Ratings, Please

I most likely won't be able to rate any more games, so my goal of 50 ratings probably won't be met using natural ways... but I'll try this:

Consider having a look at my game. Web build available! Thank you.

"Eight More Drinks, Please" can be found here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/eight-more-drinks-please

Highlights

Some games I've found interesting or fun, all have a web option.

You can also try out my game, Eight More Drinks, Please, also available with a web build.

Random Genre Combinator

Copied list of game genres from wiki, selected two random ones... ld41genre.png .. I think I'll skip the first choice for now.

I made 7 tiles so far

Thanks to youtube tutorials, I made something that I actually kinda like. ld41path.jpg But that's really all I have, zero code or any other assets.

M3D updated with all major platforms

Finally managed to get WebGL version working (Unity doesn't like to backport bugfixes apparently) for my Match-3 Tower Defense game.

A bit frustrated now, so I'll start rating tomorrow :)
