Ludum Dare 45

Looking for Linux and Mac players!

Hey everyone! Like the title says, I know my game has a web version, but if anyone who runs on a Mac or Linux box would be willing to take a few minutes to download my game and leave a quick comment of whether or not it works for you and include your Linux version or Mac build, that would be great! Also, if you have a game you'd like more plays and rating on, leave that in the comment as well and I'll check it out as soon as I can!

After Much Waiting

I see at least 1 other person who has re-visited a LD-42 entry. After much complaining from my brother that he still can't refuel the ship after over a year, I present Space Shipping, now with repair/refueling added. Full list of changes is on the Itch.io page, you can check it out here: https://rubixnoob13.itch.io/space-shipping

I also added a Linux variant, which I'm not sure will work correctly as I was testing it on a VM hooked to my development machine, haven't tested it on Linux installed on actual hardware, although I don't see why it shouldn't work :)

I am actually kinda psyched to be working on programming again, I had a lot of RL things keeping me side tracked from it. Soon, I intend to get the project ported from Gamemaker Studio over to Godot, because there are some things I've learned to do in Godot that are either clunky or impossible in GMS, at least with my current level of GMS knowledge. And since I have the 1.4 version of GMS and it's technically unsupported, and Godot is free and open-source, I plan to make the jump to Godot.

Future things planned for this project: - Better solar system - Ability to load multiple cargo per stop - Music and sound effects - Actual combat vs random events while moving on the navigation map - Multiple galaxies to explore instead of just part of our current solar system - Procedural generation for replayability - Multiple Ships and cargo hold layouts, since it was initially conceived as a puzzle game based on the "Running out of Space" theme - Other improvements suggested by other Jammers / FaceBook friends and family after the jam ended in 2018.

That's all for now, stay tuned for future updates, and I'll try to not take a year or more for the next one!

Off to a late start

So, I didn't get myself as hyped before this LD Jam as I wanted to, so my energy level has been kinda low. I actually have a rather decent idea on paper, but I've not written a single line of code / drawn any real assets yet and we're already at 1 day 7 hours left for the jam.

So, guess it's time to kick it into high gear and get to work. Wish me luck!

Finished at the wire!

Whew! Couldn't seem to get motivated at first, then had some real life issues get in the way for about half of the first day. Finally got an idea going, then had to hammer out all of it in probably about 10 hours total time.

I intended to have a few more mechanics, but I do like how everything is sort of interconnected and you have to try to manage all of it. If you'd like to check it out, here's the link:

I'm going to take a break now, and then I'll be playing/rating games over the next few days! Good luck everyone!!!

While(true) is live!

Whew! I've been plagued with tech issues for the entirety of this jam, but I finally got this thing to submit. Behold, the culmination of around 5 hours of work, and a lot of technical difficulties.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/whiletrue-6

I'm guessing my title wasn't that original, since LD put a "6" at the end of it lol

Getting a late start (as usual) on playing games also

Hello everyone! I got a late start on working on my project for the jam, so I only had like 5 hours to work on it. Since then, I've had a lot of "life getting in the way" type moments, but here I am FINALLY getting around to playing some of your games and rating them. If you'd like me to play your game, comment on this post (no, I'm not a cool streamer or anything, just a guy who makes games and gives honest feedback)

If you want to check out 5 hours of work, check out my game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/whiletrue-6

Thanks!

Obligatory "I'm In" post

Hey everyone! Off to a bit of a late start as usual, but I actually managed to submit themes, complete the slaughter and all 4 theme voting rounds, and do some brainstorming about the game I hope to make. I'm planning to participate in the Jam, however due to work constraints and scheduling, I may end up on the compo instead if I can finish in time.

Tools I'll be using: - Godot Engine (https://godotengine.org) : Free and open source for those who don't already know, and I've used it for several other projects, so I know my way around the environment. Plus it's super easy to build for Windows, Linux, and MacOS - SFXR (https://www.drpetter.se/project_sfxr.html) : for sound effects and was originally created for Ludum Dare 10 way back in 2007 :) - Aseprite, GIMP, Paint.net : Graphics (not yet fully decided on the style I want, so that style will determine what tool I want to use) - Not sure about music, I'm not very musically talented, but I have Bosca Ceoil and LMMS if I have enough time, may attempt to throw together some sounds

Good luck everyone, get plenty of rest, take breaks, have some snacks, and make something awesome! :)

Don't Splat the Bat! live with HTML5 Build

Hey everyone! Just finished "Don't Splat the Bat!", a game about going deeper and deeper into a cave without splatting on the rocks. Hope you enjoy it! - HTML5 build - Builds for Windows, Linux, and Mac, if anyone wants to actually download them - If you play it, be sure to leave me some feedback so I know to check out your entries as well!

Planning a mobile version of my LD48 entry

Hey everyone! I hope you're having a wonderful day! Have you had the chance to play my game "Don't Splat the Bat" yet? If not, please check it out here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/dont-splat-the-bat

I'm planning to work on a mobile release, because I've already had quite a bit of good feedback from people who have played it so far. There's a web build, so nothing to download, and if you check it out and have any suggestions for improvements, please leave a comment.

Of course, if you want me to check out your game, link it in the comments and I'll check it out as well!

Thanks for all the feedback so far and best of luck with the Jam ratings!

Obligatory I'm In post

Almost forgot when LD was, so I didn't get to submit any theme ideas, but I made it in time for round 1 of voting yay! :)

After some technical difficulties, Electro-Twixt is ready to play!

So for the first time I worked with a teammate, and I was having some difficulty getting Godot to let me link their menu scene with my project, but everything seems to be working fine now after a bit of troubleshooting. Check out our entry here, it's got HTML5

More bugs than a Bethesda game?! Probably not...

This is my 8th(?) Ludum Dare if I'm not mistaken, and every time it seems like I have some crazy idea that's probably around 1000 times bigger than I should attempt for a game jam, but I do it anyway. I always learn a lot and this time around was no different. The main "new thing" I was experimenting with was a "vector flow field" for pathfinding with many moving objects on the screen since the map doesn't change.

If you'd like to check out my entry for the Jam, here it is: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/morpheus-of-mars

Advanced Warning: Since it's clamped to 1920x1080, itch didn't seem to like making it fit inside a browser window, at least for me. Maybe if you run in 4k it will look okay. Otherwise, try the Windows download and give that a try.

Thanks again, and I look forward to playing all of your entries over the next several days, once I've had some sleep (been bugfixing my initial upload for around 4 hours now, I should have probably slept haha)

Uber-Heck Post-Jam Version is Now Available

Hey, everyone! This is the 9th Ludum Dare I have participated in, and I'm pretty sure it's the FIRST time I've ever ACTUALLY completed a Post-Jam update to include all the things I ran out of time to implement during the Jam itself.

If you haven't had a chance to play the initial entry, please check it out here: https://rubixnoob13.itch.io/uber-heck

Then, once you've given a rating based on that, feel free to download the Post Jam Update version for Windows and check that out as well! I was hoping to get a Crazy Taxi vibe, and I really think the music and sound effects helped to bring it all together after the Jam.

I learned a lot as usual, including how to make an AudioStreamPlayer in Godot entirely in GDScript, so that I can have a music player that doesn't care which scene we switch to, it still just keeps playing the music instead of stopping and restarting every time a scene changes.

If there's any interest, I can also attempt to do an export for Linux or MacOS, or another HTML5 build, just not sure where to host that one before the Jam ends (don't want people to give me votes for awesome when I've been working on the Post-Jam stuff for a week or more beyond the Jam submission deadline. TL;DR: If you play the game and it has music, that's NOT the one you should be voting on :heartpulse:

Thanks for checking it out! Be sure to leave a comment with any feedback, as well as if you have a game you'd like me to play and rate for you!

Obligatory "I'm in" post

I've missed out on quite a few of the more recent Ludum Dares, hoping to be available and able to work on this one, at least for most of the time (may have to work on part of the final day or so, we'll see)

Anyway, here's my theme ideas: ldsugg.PNG

Slaughter Done

I may seem a bit picky, but I don't consider things like a specific game genre or type of game (like 2D, 2.5D isometric, Tower Defense, etc) to be a good theme. I also don't really care for things like "Only X Button(s)", or "You are the _". I see Only 1 Button submitted every year. I'm old enough I remember playing a lot of Atari 2600 when I was very young, the iconic joystick with a single red button. The technology has come so far since the early 80's, why limit your creativity that way?

I try to look for things that I think could be interpreted multiple different ways by different people so everyone doesn't make the same game. I saw quite a bit of variation way back in LD42 for "Running out of Space", but even then there were quite a few people who took the theme very literal and made some type of endless runner game where you were in space. After playing 10-20 of those during the voting round, you start to wish there was more room for interpretation of the theme.

All that being said, I also normally try to not vote for duplicates, so if there were 12 copies of something I DID think was a good theme, I probably only upvoted it once or twice, not all 12 times. Maybe that's the wrong way to do it, but that's what I personally do.

We won't talk about the ones that were flagged as being inappropriate or offensive, as they probably know what they were doing and we don't feed the trolls any more than needed around here

With that out of the way, here's how I fared for the slaughter round this year:

Summoner's Law is finished!

You can check it out here! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/summoners-law

There's an HTML5 version as well as a Windows download.

Actually finished everything we wanted to do in the time we had available, although it's a bit short, it has a little polish, and it's definitely a vibe!LD55_cover.PNG

Looking to rate some more games later today

Hey everyone! I'm not streaming, not famous, just someone who likes Ludum Dare and plans on rating / leaving feedback for some more games before LD57 winds all the way down.

If you would like me to play and rate your game, leave a comment on this post with a link to your LD57 game page. I prefer HTML5 but I'll play anything on Linux/Windows if I can get it to run under Linux (I normally can, if I have issues I'll let you know!)

No pressure at all, but if you'd like to check out our game Fantascope Chasm as well, feel free to check it out here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/57/fantascope-chasm

Better late (ratings) than never?

So I've been rather unmotivated to do much of anything this entire Jam. So like, if you want me to play / rate your game then leave a comment on this post (preferably web games but I should be able to try most Linux/Windows builds as well)

I'll try to get some plays/ratings in later today since my "day" job has me keeping really odd hours.

Best of luck, Jammers!

Ludum Dare 59

Better late than never?

TL;DR tech issues on our end during submission, initial submit was missing ~ 90% of the level. Then IRL things happened that have kept us busy for most of the last couple weeks.

So I will be playing/rating some games today. If you're still checking out the Ludum Dare page and want me to rate yours, leave a comment on this post. I'll try to get to as many as I can while I have the time!

If you haven't had a chance to check out our (rather short due to being over-ambitious) entry, you can find it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/59/bad-vibes

I'll be doing my first ever postmortem on it soon as well, so long as nothing else pops up between now and then
