A change of tools!

I’m in with a change of tools. I was originally going to use löve, but when I added hardon collision detection from tiles to my basecode, everything slowed to a crawl. It probably has to do with adding million small rectangles or something but it looks like that I’m going to use flixel again and save löve for next time when my basecode is mature enough to be used.

I have an idea, lets start making it!

You are some sort of solder and your plane crashed. You are the only one who got out alive, but dark creatures are approaching. Can you survive alone against the massive horde before help can arrive?

The game is starting to shape up

The red boxes are enemy spawners that will be hidden later on

Left to do:

  • add more enemies
  • add color and detail to the graphics
  • add something for scoring and a highscore
  • other stuff

A day has passed

Featured in screenshot:

  • worm and flying enemy
  • pickups for scoring
  • highscore
  • health and ammo pickups

Not featured:

  • Highscore
  • Jumping walking enemy

Tomorrow is a time for balancing, highscore saving and adding colors to the graphics

The game is done!

The game is done, or to be more honest the submission has been complete for a while now, and I’m currently working on the post compo version and I’m thinking of uploading it to kongregate or some other flash hosting service. If you wanna help, have a play or two and give me a list of improvements that I can add to the final game.

Play it here

I’m in!

This time I might even finish with a complete game. My weapons of choice this time will be:

  • Paint.net (or the photoshop cs6 beta if I’ll install it)
  • Notepad++
  • Löve 0.72 (or 0.8 if I have the time to upgrade my basecode)
  • sfxr

If the game I end up making is a platformer I’ll probably be basing it on my current löve platformer test.

Some tiny progress (pun intended)

I got an idea. You are a professor/scientist/doctor who accidentally either shrunk or enlarged yourself, so the world is either tiny or looks tiny. It will be a platformer and I’ll probably make it so you die often as that seems popular. I’ll as previously declared be using löve and notepad++ on my crappy windows 7 laptop and I’ll be basing it on my löve platformer previous code. I have installed photoshop cs6 beta so I’ll probably use that too. I discovered GreaseMonkey’s music generation tool so I’ll be using that alongside sfxr for sound and music.

That said… lets see the photos :)

I got a dslr but I'll be using my galaxy s2 since it syncs with my computer without cables

Work in progress on main scientist dude ( = the player)

He is obviously inspired by the far side, but hey… people love the far side, right?

Our hero! Screencap from the photoshop cs6 beta

… and of course, more food photos!

Lunch: Hönökaka (the bread) with liverwurst, cucumber and hot chocolate

Rose hip soup (that I'm currently enjoying)

That hero looks great! I wish I could make stuff like that.

Finally some gameplay

8-9 hours in I finally got some gameplay, you can jump around with separate air and ground friction. here’s a preview gameplay: windows download and mac+linux, requires löve2d 0.7.2 (0.8 doesn’t work).

Next up is more (actual) food, some jumping/falling animations for the player and evil spikes (thumtacks) that you can die on.

Current progress

I welcome death

So after I finally have eaten and looked through the flow of awesome screenshots here, I started working on spikes/thumtracks…

The white behind the player is the collisionbox, the "player" with the smaller collisionbox is really a spike with temporary graphics

Quick 3 minute microwave noodles (wasn't tasty at all, do not recommend!)

Spring rolls

Death by giant thumbtacks

Ok, I’ve been up for almost 16 hours now, and been developing roughly 13-14 hours active (excluding food pauses). I have found (and reported) a bug in the hardon collision library that I use, and added a spike/thumbtack thing that kills you when you collide with it, and a instant respawn. I would like to add some enemy that you can jump on, mario style, but I don’t know if I’ll have the time considering I need to polish the game. On the other hand, jumping on crazy lab rats sounds fun :)

Candles with a scent hides the cigarette smoke from my neighbors below, unfortunately I ran out and have to survive with normal candles :(

End of Day 1: Rats are in!

Decided that I would add rats instead of going to sleep. Spilled my drink in my keyboard and so far the keyboard hasn’t given up. If it does it’s no big loss. I’ll have to resort to type on the laptop or buy a new one(it was the cheapest usb keyboard that I could find so it shouldn’t be so hard to find a new one).

Anyway… I added a rat enemy and decided that I wanted to add mario like jump-on-enemy-to-kill-them behavior, but before I added the code to remove them I tried out the change in velocity feedback and realized the rats was more fun as a superpowered jump pad instead of a enemy, so that is what they are right now. Changing the rat to be a enemy would mean that I have to rewrite my respawn system and I don’t have time for that at all :)

The player jumping on a rat, the temporary art for the rat cam be seen at the bottom

Stuff to do for day 2

That’s the end of day 1. Time for a sleeping and tomorrow is polishing time.

Those without experience with LOVE might look awkwardly at “try latest Hardon.”

They might also think I have serious problems when I google “love hardon problem” :)

Day 2: Polish and stuff

This is the day for adding sound, music, a proper level to the game and polish the shit out of it using up whatever time I have left. Adding more tiles, fleshing out the already existing ones, that kind of stuff :)

Besides from a few sticky keys that I have to hit hard my keyboard seems to be working. Yay! I guess that is what you get for spilling drinks in it.I’ll probably try to clean it tomorrow or buy a new one.

More stuff to do

The horrible attack of the huge labrats!

Work in progress on the rat graphic, also trying out the game with 64×64 tiles for the player and rat. Not sure if I’m going 64×64 or 32×32. The game is sortof balanced against 32×32 but there is much more detail in the 64×64.

Screenshot bit bigger tiles and rat enemy

The bisca biscuits may not be good for you, but they sure are tasty

Making graphics

When will I learn? The graphics aren’t done yet. Making “nice” graphics and tiles takes time. Valuable time. Perhaps I will remember that next time :)

Lamp and microscope for the background tiles

Grapes!

Candy!

Last pack of the not so tasty noodles (but these were ok)

My last bisca biscuits

Meatballs with potato salad, red beet salad, corn salad, cucumber and marinated garlic

More graphics in game

Finally most level assets are into the game, next up sound, music and the actual game level instead of the test level I now have.

Almost complete level

2+ hours until the deadline and I finally got a level that isn’t super easy to “complete”. Left to do is to add some form of level completion thing so that the level actually can be completed. I’ve run into performance issues, and I’m guess it’s some part me not setting certain objects as passive and not having a good cell size and part running a interpreted language as a base for collision. The safe place algorithm that I wrote earlier was insufficient and stupid so I replaced it with respawn stars that you highlight.

The level!

I would have uploaded sketches, of the features that won’t make the cut, but I guess the load on the server is too much at the moment.

I’m in and I have an idea!

My idea

My idea

The basic idea is: select a animal to evolve, survive enemy waves, find a mate, reproduce and evolve. Different animals will have different powers, haven’t decided on the final amount of animals and abilities but I’m kicking around a few.
