Ludum Dare 37

Heart Heist Post-Jam version!

Entry link: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=23171

This Ludum has been a bit of a crazy one for us however with only about 48 hours of work we’re quite proud of the project we’ve put together:

Unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to introduce two key mechanics to the game: lasers and keys but fortunately we managed to finish these off in a post-jam version. Lasers are randomly generated and randomly blink on and off (on a pre-set timer) – colliding with them will kill you.

Secondly, each level has a key that you need to pickup in order to unlock the heart. This adds another layer of necessary difficulty to the game since sometimes it could be quite easy to just find the heart. Now the main mechanic, becoming a shadow in order to hide, is much more necessary since you’ll be looking around for the key and waiting for lasers to turn on and off.

Finally, we’ve added controller support – just to see what LibGDX controllers are like. LibGDX’s lwjgl3 backend adds controller hot-loading however for some reason it swaps the sticks and requires a weird JVM argument to run so we just went back to the original LibGDX backend.

Thanks to everyone whose left feedback on the game so far, you should definitely try out the post-jam version. If you’d like to rate the Ludum Dare version, it’s here.

Entropy

Should've made this post a while ago but here's Entropy, our jam entry. Link: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/entropy

cover.gif

It's a chaotic, online multiplayer (!), world-simulator. Try and nurture the world or burn it all down.

You can host your own servers or just simply play on the one we've got running. There's even AI bots (which you can configure) to mess around with.

Really proud of how quickly we got a multiplayer game up and running. We spent the first day messing around with Node and realised that just wasn't happening so we completely scrapped all the work and got this in about a day and a half.

lolage.gif

Balancing this game was the trickiest thing about it. Just like the real world one little change had major impacts and we would sit and watch our balance changes play out by just seeing what the AI did and what effects that had. Overall, it was a load of fun working on this and we hope you enjoy it too!

Entropy: Timelapse of the world

Since a lot of people don't get to see the world progressing a lot, here's a timelapse of the world changing over about a fifteen minute period in Entropy:

(Don't worry the video is much better quality than the thumbnail!)

Entropy is our Ludum Dare entry (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/entropy) where you try to overgrow the world or burn it all down online with other players.

The world persists even when other players aren't online and eventually can reset itself if the entire world burns down. Check it out and leave us some feedback!

Watch the world burn!

As it's the last day of Ludum and everyone's on fire anyway, check out Entropy, our online multiplayer game.

Join other players in either trying to burn the world down, nurturing it or balancing the chaos.

Shattered: multiplayer bulb-smashing action

Shattered needs ratings! I'm trying my best to play and rate as many games as I can this weekend because I haven't had much this time round due to so many commitments.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/shattered

Shattered is an online multiplayer game focused on PVP and keeping your base's energy topped up at all times by siphoning power from the world and stealing it from other players.

shattered1.gif

One reason why I haven't had much time to rate games is that I realised fairly early on that without players the game will be dull and unplayable and in a Ludum Dare context it's especially hard to reliably have people playing at the same time.

We actually made a multiplayer game for the last Ludum Dare as well but we managed to get bots in there for that one so that it could be enjoyed even without real players.

shattered2.gif

Unfortunately that wasn't the case this time round so we made Dangle: a tool for scheduling sessions for small multiplayer games. Hopefully some of you can use it for your own games or Shattered if you want to play it.

Good luck to everyone else desperately trying to get the 20 ratings they need this weekend!

Last few hours, let's see how many people we can get online!

Hey there, our game Shattered is an online multiplayer bulb-fighting pvp game!

shattered1.gif

We need just a few more votes in order to qualify for most of the categories but let's see how many people we can get online over the next couple of hours! I'll be online for another hour or two so be sure to download the game and I'll see you online!

Final week - use the danger filter!

We're in the final week now and most games have more than enough ratings. Lets get as many games over the line as we can using the Danger filter.

danger.png

Skip past the marketing, rate games in danger!

The algorithm was really harsh this year - did anyone else think so?

There are way too many games on the front page with 30+ ratings asking for more. Let's get as many games in the danger zone over the line as possible.

I built a free tool for leaderboards, player stats and more

Hey everyone, just wanted to let you know about Talo (https://trytalo.com) - an open source tool I’ve been building. It’s inspired by almost 20 LD compos (!?!?!) and many last-minute rushes to get leaderboards or some sort of stat tracking in my jam games. I built Talo as something I can use in jams and have been using it for the past few LDs.

It’s very early but Talo works with Godot and Unity. Here are the docs for leaderboards (it’s super simple):

Godot: https://docs.trytalo.com/docs/godot/leaderboards

Unity: https://docs.trytalo.com/docs/unity/leaderboards

If you have any feedback or questions let me know!

Looking for speed runners

TossedAndFound-ezgif.com-video-to-gif-converter-2.gif

Can anyone beat the 2 minute high score? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/56/creature-cave

Post-jam version now available!

ludum.png

Thank you to everyone who rated or played Tossed and Found! We wanted to fix up a few issues, mostly collision issues, weird interactions and some leaderboard formatting issues.

We've loved seeing all the speed runners optimise their scores, congrats to everyone in the top 10!

Screenshot 2024-11-02 at 20.39.31.png

On the backend, we used Talo to build our leaderboards. It made adding leaderboards during the jam super easy, and we can see all the players and entries in our dashboard too.

You can play Tossed and Found on itch.io here.

Need a quick leaderboard? Check out Talo

Unfortunately we couldn't find time for this jam but I wanted to show the tool we built for game jam leaderboards. Talo started during an LD event and our goal was to build leaderboards in less than 1 hour (which we successfully did last time!) Today Talo leaderboards are packed full of features like:

  • Customisation: Choose how your leaderboard gets sorted and if players can have multiple entries
  • Entry props: You can attach arbitrary properties to each entry, e.g. the character the player was using
  • Entry management: You can hide suspicious entries and update leaderboard scores from the web dashboard
  • Daily leaderboards: With the click of a button you can have daily leaderboards in your game

P.S. there's a video showing how Talo leaderboards work in Unity and Godot here.

P.P.S. Talo also lets you track game stats and see how many players are playing/have played your game too 👀.
