LD25

WELP, this is my first Ludum Dare! I’m really more of an artist, but I’m pretty knowledgeable about gml so we’ll see how this goes. Wish me luck!

Progress Report 1

ludumscreen

Hit a little stumbling block on collisions (who would have thought) but its almost perfect. I probably reworked how the buildings display like ten times before I settled with this. Anyway, I promise this will be much more than just a breakout game when its all said and done.

Feedback appreciated!

Bugs:

  • Meteor gets stuck in buildings and destroys them too quickly.

Maybe do “bounce off solid objects for when it hits the building?

Wow, sound takes a lot longer than I expected! This has been a really great weekend, and I think a fairly successful first Ludum Dare! Please give it a shot, and please consider giving me feedback! Sorry about the stock GM loading screen and icon, ran pretty short on time there at the end!

Very nice! It looks tons better than my GM:S game.

Complete!

TitleScreenshot3

This is my third Ludum Dare, and in my opinion my most successful one. Gubble Quest is a point and click adventure game, where you play as a small green creature named Gubble as it tries to escape the home of its captor. After the game is over, compete for the shortest completion time, or search the house for the 5 hidden secrets!

This week is finals week for me, so I really shouldn’t have even done this. My original intention was to hold back and only make a very small and simple game. That sort of flew out the window as I fell in love with the game I was making.  Give it a shot!

Gubble Quest Update

GQ

So this week my plan is to hugely update Gubble Quest. I’ve got some music in the works, I’m gonna fix up the code, and I plan to add some new features.

So far on the agenda I plan to:

  1. Fix up dialogue boxes (like above)
  2. Add more steps to game completion
  3. Add more incidental objects to interact with
  4. Add more interaction with the current objects
  5. Add some more secrets

However I would love to hear some feedback! If you’ve played the game, what improvements would you like to see? The sky’s the limit, suggest away! If you haven’t played it but are interested, give it a shot, and then come back and tell me what to add or change. It will be greatly appreciated!

I would play your game if you provided a standalone executable. I (like many other people) don’t like having an installer mess up my PC. I know GameMaker can do this, I’m sure somebody (google) can tell you how.

Thanks for reminding me, I’ve been lazily avoiding fixing it for a few days now. If you download it again you will find that it is a standalone exe, and that it is now uploaded to mega instead of mediafire.

Progress Report, Then Sleep

I’ve made promising progress tonight on my game! You play as a troll under a bridge, opting to either attack or hide from various passerby. Don’t hide too long though, or you might get too hungry! It’s kind of a tower defense right now?

Of course I’ve got a lot more planned, but here’s a demo if you’re interested.

It’s looking good. Great idea for the theme!

Finished!

Screen3This was definitely my smoothest Ludum Dare! By the end of the first night my game was practically finished, and I spent the rest of the time expanding in many planned and unplanned directions. I am incredibly fond of this one, and I’ll likely continue it some day. My brain is still buzzing with ideas for things to add.

You can check it out here. Windows only, I’m afraid. I know you can use Game Maker Studio to export to Mac but I really haven’t gotten the hang of it. If anyone feels charitable, feel free to open the source and export to Mac yourself! I’d be incredibly appreciative. Anyway, I’d love to hear your feedback!

Bridge Dweller Post-Mortem

Screen Shot 2015-08-24 at 11.26.05 PM copy

So I finally did a real thorough and complete playthrough of Bridge Dweller. I will say that it’s possible, but barely. You have to be -crazy- conservative. I’m talking kill a few guys, wait for infamy to go down, repeat. Until you have enough money for a slingshot and bullets. Money rates are WAY too low.

There’s also a few bugs. A pretty big exploit to begin with is filling the forest with goblins and then fishing nonstop, replacing goblins with fishmen because of your mountain of fish. This was made easier by a bug which made it so eating fish didnt subtract any, and buying fishmen didnt seem to either.

If you’re fishing, enemies walk right through you. You then walk diagonally off the screen when they turn the corner. Pretty game-breaking. I actually used this to my advantage and won the game though. Totally immunity to knights!

So yeah pretty bad. I’m gonna do a quick patch-job and call it done. That is, until I remake it. I have a lot of big ideas and I think I might give it a shot.

Also, ok, this was weird. Near the end there, while I was developing, game maker studio actually started bugging out for me! it was reading comments as code, sending incredibly illogical error messages at me, and being super janky. I would fiddle with it for a sec, like erasing and re-adding semi-colons, and eventually it would work???? I’ve never had issues with game maker before, and it was very frustrating.
