Tower defense : Forward&Reversed

We decided to go with an idea we wanted to push forward for some time now. It's a tower defense game, but after defeating the waves you have to pass through your own defenses to escape the zone. The more defenses you have... I think you get it.

Check out the first footage on Youtube !

https://youtu.be/zPQ1aa3vsQQ First WebGL build of the prototype. No real gameplay yet but a lot of mechanics already in place !

Stay tuned for more ;-)

Fortress Escape - WebGL mouse sensitivity fix

d77d.gif

The mouse sensitivity for our WebGL build is finally fixed ! For some reason it was fine in the editor and desktop builds, but way too sensitive in WebGL. Anyway in case you're interested, it's actually very easy to adapt you default settings based on the platform : mouse sensitivity fix.png

Fell free to experiment with our Tower defense / FPS escape concept ! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/fortress-escape

Also I have time today to try more games so feel free to post your links and I'll leave a rating and comment.

Have a great day!

I'm in ! And with music this time

maxresdefault.jpg

You have no clue how to compose music, and have zero knowledge of music theory ? Fear no more ! Just open Bosca Ceoil and press your mouse buttons randomly until something bearable comes out of your speakers.

Here is my second attempt at creating some music !

Listen to it on Clyp.it

Let me know if you have any tips or references, I genuinely have no idea what I'm doing... I also accept insults and threats if it makes you feel any better, you listened to my crappy loop after all !

Chill retro RPG loop

I'm still working hard trying to get a feel for music composition, in preparation for the jam.

BoscaCeoilScreeshot.png

Here is my loop, just out of the oven ! I hope it gives you some inspiration for your own game 馃榿

https://clyp.it/m5j1h3j2

Tips and remarks are very welcome, I just began learning this stuff.

Also I recommend to anyone who is afraid of composing music to at least try and open Bosca Ceoil and follow the tutorial before the jam. Even better if you can follow a video tutorial online. You'll be surprised what you can achieve with very little effort and zero background.

Have fun !

A first glimpse

Our concept is somewhat final and we have a good idea how we'll be able to deliver ~10 minutes of gameplay in this RPG-Rythm game, in which a deadly monster kid leaves his world to learn how to danse with bunnies.

persos.png

I'm sure they'll go along fine ! What could possibily go wrong ?

It's something !

Our game is taking shape ! The environment is roughly done and we have our basic rythm game mechanics in place too.

Our goal is to have a working game by tomorrow and spend the last day polishing.

Final, our menu is !

Welcome to Dancing club Bloodlust

Please wipe the blood off the dance floor before leaving.

WebGL Build available !

A game to try, just one click away !

I still recommend the desktop build for the best experience, if you can spare one more click ;-)

Going to sleep

These last 72h+ have been amazing

I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did !

This is my 2nd LD and I was so disappointed last time I couldn't bring an end to my game. I liked my game, it was something, but I knew it's wasn't a good game (we ranked #510).

This time I can say I love my game. It's messy, it's completely hacked, but it does the frknt job. There is an end (very cheap), a nice difficulty curve (at least the first one I really design instead of justify). There is obviously a lot missing to it, but we were in that iteration loop for quite some time. And it felt good, testing the game, adding to it, looking for the weakest link, and again, and again.

I really want to thank the community for these very special moments. I wanted to share something more personnal, I hope it has his place in the feed too ;-)

Ho and if it doesn't :

Please rate my game and leave a comment !

... And try to be kind with the bunnies plz

A suble mix of cute and gore. Rage included.

Perfect if you're looking for 10 minutes of fun, with a nice difficulty curve and a rewarding rythm game. Rage is pretty much guaranteed at some point, but you'll also get satisfaction after beating the levels ! Progress is saved during the game, feel free to come back to it later.

Post Jam version !

And finally a working WebGL build

thumbnaiDancingClubBloolust.jpg

A suble mix of cute and gore. Rage included.

Patch note - Adjusted the difficulty and sounds synchronization for all levels - Fixed the animation of the credits panel in the main menu - Fixed the problem where guard02 would not let you pass after beating every challenge - Added different portraits for NPCs - Added the possibility to run by pressing left shift (a sign is still needed to inform the player) - Adjusted the parallax effect on the clouds background - Fixed a music transition problem. AudioManager is now much more robust. - Sound for WebGL is now working on most navigators (there is still a small volume problem when fading in and out) - Added a Z value for ribbons and hats, so they have the same depth as the NPCs wearing them - Fixed a problem in the dialogs in the dance scenes, where the game would hang if you mash the return key - Iterated on the dialogs. More stupid jokes ! - Added a post jam watermark

Obviously, don't rate the game based on this version please. However all comments are more than welcome as I would like to continue iterating on this game. My goal is to make it a nice and weird mini-game.

Thank you for playing !

Begging for hate comments

Go hard on me please ! I need to know why you hate/quit the game.

You get a steam key if you actually hurt my feelings. (I'm kidding the steam key is a lie, see I'm a bad guy I deserve it!)

PS: Don't rate the WebGl version, it's post jam. I only ask for comments.

PS2 : If you really want to rate please download the game and disregard what I said above.

We have those 10 minutes of fun !

Now with voice acting

I really enjoyed working on my LD41 entry, and I'm also happy with the end result. I don't know if I really succeeded, but I tried my best to keep the project simple enough so we could finish the game in the 72h time frame.

Despite the game being well received overall, in my opinion the scope was still just a little bit too high, and I'll have to improve on that for my next entry. I can't change the past, but for sure I can finish what I started ! That's why I really wanted to spend a few more days polishing the game. I suppose nothing is ever polished enough, but after those two extra days I feel like the experience is now really enjoyable and smooth.

Let me know what YOU think !

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/dancing-club-bloodlust

https://spacemonkeyc.itch.io/dancingclub-bloodlust

This is a post-jam version. I'd love to read your comments but please don't rate.

Patch note :

  • Added text and voices for the intro
  • Lowered the difficulty so everybody can finish the game without frustration
  • Completely remade the main menu and updated the credits
  • Skeletons won't disapear anymore #neverforget

How to help everyone improve their own behavior (not limited to LD)

Just explain them what is a good behavior and why :)

When I first entered LD in December, I had a hard time understanding how everything works. To be honest I probably still don't.

When I look at people who ended up in top 100 for LD41, some of them don't understand that JAM and COMPO have a different ranking.

I saw people on youtube participating in LD for the first time and when the time came to submit their game, they didn't know if they should post in COMPO or JAM. The person ended up posting in "unfinished" and now has 0 ratings, when his game clearly showed some talent, and all he needed was encouragement to continue.

There are a lot of other examples, and I'm sure many of you can relate to a certain extent. And you know what, it's not their fault. These people have good intentions, like everybody else.

We should focus on informing the newcomers.

Because they are the ones who need the information, they want to listen, and they are open-minded. Explain them what LD is, why it was created, what is the spirit of the event, what are the rules and why, and so on. Maybe a video documentary ? I don't know ! But it has to be fun. Maybe a game ?? This place is full of game designers, I'm sure we can make it instructive AND fun. I like the idea of little badges and rewards, but it would also create some kind of hierarchy, with the newcomers at the bottom, and I don't like this idea that because you just arrived in the community people give you less credit.

Of course, we should all try to be exemplary.

But if you are here reading this feed, it's because you care, so I'm sure you are already doing everything you can. We might all have our own reasons to care ? Maybe if we share those reasons, we can get everyone on board with us ?

Here is my top 3 reasons why I love LD

1) You guys are awesome, seriously. If you've played some mobas, you know what a toxic community is. This community is at the other extreme. Comments are positive, constructive, creative, clever, encouraging, caring ... It's the social environment everybody on this planet would need to be the best version of themselves, learn, share, and love each other. It goes well beyond LD in my opinion.

2) Feedback. Lots of quality feedback. Peer review is in my opinion one of the best ways to learn from each other, and give back by teaching others too. It's also very scalable. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes the #1 education tool in a near future. I'd love to hear your opinion on the matter as it's still very new all things considered.

3) Fun ! We are all here to create and play each other's games after all :) It's all about creating innovative concepts, experimenting, having fun together, and releasing all that fun into the world for free. How cool is that ?

Sorry for the long post, here are potato games for you :

https://itch.io/search?q=potato

https://gamejolt.com/search/games?q=potato

What are the last games you actually FINISHED ?

Nowadays it's all about memes, short videos, 5 minutes mobiles games, or games that aim to bring a longer experience but that you never get to finish because you enjoy the first items of this list too much.

Somehow, even though we live in this constant chaos of short activities, some games hook you long enough for you to finish them ! I wonder what are those games for you ?

Here is my list. It's very arbitrary and not ordered. Just the last games I happened to finish for random reasons !

Prey - Despite what I heard here and there, I think the gameplay is fun and deep enough for the ~20h I played. But of course the polishing made a huge difference. To me the story and graphics are VERY nice. Difficulty was just on point for me. I still listen to the OST sometimes. I played without any powers so I might try again using them (replay value). I might be a bit biased because I know one of the artists who also worked on Dishonored 2, but I don't think so honestly. I didn't finish Dishonored 2 and probably won't.

Out There Omega - Ok I'm a SciFi nerd ^^'. What I really loved about that game is the rogue-like mechanic combined with the storytelling. At first you don't understand anything about the story so you don't know how to react to the situations, a bit like FTL but there is a strong main storyline here. So it's not only isolated events, a lot of them are connected together. The consequence is that even if you never encountered an event, you can still find the right answer if you know enough about the big picture. Sometimes events are just puzzles in disguise about math, science or music. If you never played that game and try to beat it, just don't expect too much of the end scene. It's barely and end scene.

War for the Overworld - Not the best game, but I was just too nostalgic of Dungeon Keeper! Also it was very polished, and easy, to a point it was even relaxing. At some point I hesitated to make a game like this so I wanted to experiment more with the mechanics. I still think there is some potential for something more exciting and fresh.

Pony Island - Now this one could be on top of the list. Short, fun, fresh, and surprising. Also breaking the forth wall here and there. With a little bit of challenge but not too much. The kind of game I really love.

Braid - Too obvious to explain. Very "portaly". The kind of game I aim to make (I enjoy teaching complex concepts). I'll probably never succeed but I'll try !

I'm in!

And this time I'll be working with Gr茅gory Nunkovics (https://www.artstation.com/twrch). Not sure what kind of game we'll be making but he's a fellow SciFi nerd, so I made this track to get in the mood! https://clyp.it/fhddm345. May it inspire you too ;-)

Tools we'll be using : - Unity - Gimp - FL Studio - Audacity - Krita - Blender - Belgian beer

To those who want to start making music, I highly recommend Bosca Ceoil.

What makes a good theme?

It's common knowledge that the theme is never the one you would expect. At this point one could suspect that the final round is there to select the one theme everybody downvoted and tried to slaughter! But I digress... ;-)

In my humble opinion, a good theme will define clear constraints but will provide enough room to choose between any game genre or art style.

Here are my theme suggestions...

themes.png

I'm curious to hear your opinion on the topic!

We have a concept and basic gameplay!

We'll make a top down multiplayer shooter, where bullets make holes in the floor! Bullets will move slowly so they will be easy to avoid... until you run out of space due to flying projectiles and holes everywhere. Don't worry, there will be AIs ;-) And hopefully powerups, guns, pixel collision, a dash... Ho, and I just finished gamepad support.
