Ludum Dare 54

My first experience with Ludum Dare

Hallo there! Unsure if anybody will read this, but I still wanted to express how I feel about my first Ludum Dare

To put it lightly it's a blast really, I met quite a lot of awesome and passionate game devs that made fantastic games in a short span of time, and my first LD submission for a compo was well recieved too, with a lot of positive feedback and constructive criticism, I never imagined I could actually make anything like a game jam submission and actually deliver something of such caliber, in general people are very nice and we are just having fun, which I really like, this experience has made me feel even more passionate about my game dev adventure and my projects in general, I'm excited to partake in the next one too and check out all the awesome submissions people post, because really in the end what matters is all the fun we have as a community, so in the end I appreciate that I was able to partake in this event and meet more awesome devs! I will be sure to try to attend next year april too! :D

Post-Jam Plans!

Hello there! With the closing of the Jam drawing near it's about time I made a small to moderate sized post about Post-Jam plans!

As of right now I sit here all day because I broke my foot during the closing days of the jam so I spent a ton of time formulating game plans on paper for NarrowLabs Rumble, now rebranded as "Nucleon's Legacy: Uranii's Curse" wrote up a much better lore and rethought a lot of the game itself, and soon I will begin working on turning paper theory into actual code.

However at the same time if possible I will make a trip down to my room (I'm in another room for convenience) and get the project files for another project put on hold because of the jam, so updates on both will be present in the future!

If anybody really enjoyed the game or are curious what's happening with it, or just want to leave feedback, be sure to reach out on discord or twitter, both linked in the Bio of my profile for LD, and thanks everyone for trying my game, thanks everyone for making awesome games for me to try, and thanks for the hosts for making such a lovely event! I will be seeing you guys in April!

NarrowLabs walked so Nucleon can run...

I already talked about my post-jam updates about the game so let's cut to me for once, I have gone into this game jam thinking I will be quite a bit on the end tail of the swarm, first ever actually finished game, in an unfamiliar engine, in 3D, which I barely used especially when your company builds on 2D games, so getting overall a 3/5 with a ton of comments saying things were good, pointing out issues and such really just made me go "hmm so that's how it works" I realized that the term: "it could've been better" just fell flat to me... like why could've been? It still can be better! so to me this jam was sort of an awakening, like when you see other motivated game devs clash ideas and share insights, you also start to feel this motivation, seeing people show up, say something, or me showing up on their game's comment section sometimes giving insight they are grateful for, I think that was the highlight... So afterall to really summarize the game jam in a few words for me...

I'm back!

Hello again! "legendary" astronaut fella here and I'm happy to announce that after dealing with some projects within my own "company" and the general burnout of having to code everything myself I'm partaking in this LD having done some social events to recharge and all that, idk if I'm going solo or me and the team wants to all partake together but likely solo since I only learned LD is this weekend today! Crazy huh? I really should pay more attention to my events instead of playing tetris...

In my final hours

In my final hours I write a blog post to take my mind off from how hilarious simple and stupid I made the gameplay of my game... and just how much more I love to go about and 3D model things... I can't wait to show off my "stunning" visuals and gloomy atmosphere, with a neat little soundtrack, as people mindlessly click away at the game immersed in it's glory (hopefully, idk really this might be a huge flop)

Post-Jam Question

Hey there! I will just get right to the point here... I started tinkering with Visual Novel dialogue systems and the like, the entire system is almost completely done minus the cutscene controller which is just the intricate wiring of movement and text, should be simple to make...

However I was wondering since John's Visage (My LD entry) uses an old aweful design that adds limitational flaws to the system, should I invest time into upgrading the system and the game a bit or do I stick with the OG system and just fix or change a few bits?

I know this is mostly up to me to decide but I always liked input from other people, so I appreciate all inputs in advance!

Ludum Dare 55 post-jam summary

Ludum Dare 55 was a pretty fun jam with a lot of unique games and lovely people to meet and interact with, I had about as much fun as I did last time testing people's games replying to comments having fun with it, my favorite part is still the reviewing phase, where the community comes together to check awesome games!

As for the fate of John's Visage I'm uncertain I do wanna upgrade it heavily but I may become too ambitious again like I did with Narrowlabs slowly chipping away at my will to work on it, I have my hopes but for now I will put it on a shelf of projects I need to revisit and work on one day for now it's time for me to rest until my next gamejam!

I'm coming back for the 3rd time

greetings o/ I'm happy to announce my return for the 3rd time in a row for LD gamejams, this time even threw my theme suggestions into the hat, plotting to try and make another game to tell another tale, aiming to keep my upwards trend for making gamejam games, after 2 rounds of dabbling with LD I'm confident this time about exactly what I can and should do for the event! Excited to try a lot of entries and see what everyone makes also! (favorite part of the whole event, where we come together to play each other's little games)

Refining

Greetings!

making another post purely to share stuff really, but I'm slowly realizing that I could just add an extra challenge or spice to my game jam entries by following certain set patterns, basically slowly refining the story and design of a much larger world, grasping ideas from it to form something bigger, so my excitement for the Jam is getting bigger, so much so I been also redesigning my submissions to be more fun and differently interpretable (no I won't share them I want them to remain a surprise if they make it), but yeah excited to be a part of this again and feeling more back to the game dev game

Musical help needed

Greetings!

So I have been using beepbox for most of my entries to make my own music, and I still wanna make my own music, but I have been pondering if people here know of any other free open-source music making programs to tinker and try, I love beepbox but I also wanna try some other alternatives, see what I like more!

Thank you everyone for the help beforehand!

Slaughterhouse

this was... certainly something...

if I was to break it down... we had the singular word themes that were a mixed bag, personally not my favorites, then we had the overly specific themes that are just not good, then all the memes, and all the weird themes tossed in there purely because... still found some gems I personally liked but we shall see what makes it into the finals

Continuity question

Greetings!

I been pondering... does anybody else try to make games that have a certain continuity to their previous LD entry? I seen a few people, just curious how widespread it is or why people do or don't do it...

Mainly because I'm starting to find my style of games and designs that add a form of continuity, a lot of tiny projects sometimes matching up to be a longer story type thing, because commiting to a large project is hard if not impossible for me now...

anyways enough yapping, I'm curious about what other people think about LD entries having continuity to a certain degree

I'm out...

It's with a heavy heart for me to say this...

I had to decide to not partake in this jam... I came across info that threw a wrench into my game jam plans, I don't wanna go into details, I'm really upset, hope I can show up for LD 58 (exams are in april for my class so likely can't partake)

I do hope everyone else makes awesome games and has a lot of fun! I will return when the time comes!

Engines

Greetings!

I'm thinking about learning a new engine which is partially the reason why I opted out of LD56, but I have no idea what engine I wanna try, I'm looking for something simple for small 3D projects, I know UE5 exists but that engine seems a bit much for me, I also wanna avoid Unity and Godot as I already know those, Any and all suggestions are welcome!

I'm back in...

I'm going to be brief, I'm indecisive things are being thrown around me left and right, made some hasty decisions, but I did some reflections, I wanna do this competition, and my classes for Java turned out to be easier, so I can skip the class that was the roadblock, I will make it up during the week...

I just wanna partake, meet awesome people, play cool games, make something, I will be seeing you all this friday, no more posts because it's getting confusing, sorry guys I'm bad at decisions for myself

Themes Hypothesis

Greetings!

I'm here to throw an interesting idea for how themes work, because I see people say that the themes are repeating and are simple, and truthfully some of the themes listed are not part of the slaughter, now I'm new to the jam so if you knew this before you can let me know, but my hypothesis is that every theme that was kept in via the slaughter rounds from previous Jams are randomly selected back into the next theme vote to give them a chance too, which is great but yeah it can lead to repeats, as for the simple 1 word themes... yeah I don't really like them either but so many slaughter round themes were just 1 word that it's really hard to avoid them...

But remember guys! It's not about the themes, it's about having fun with other game devs!

LD pngs

Whoops the power is out (jokes aside made myself some PNGs for the upcoming LD stream)

Boss Fights

Greetings!

I really wanna make a boss, along with my usual story tomfoolery, not sure I can get it done in the 48 hours compo (really can't afford to go into Jam this time) but I'm really hopeful!

Now for some engagement have you guys made any bosses for a LD? how did it turn out?

Now we wait

Have to say last theme voting round had me voting a lot of reds before I took a break, looked at them again and bumped up some votes to greens and yellows... all I gotta do now is wait

this is me waiting...

some font help needed

Greetings!

I'm currently in the process of making a thumbnail for my upcoming LD streams, but I have no idea what the font is for the current LD logo, if anybody knows the font and could send me a link or the name I'd really appreciate it, thank you guys in advance

Edit: I found it thanks to you guys!
